As MSC Opera returns to South African waters for the highly anticipated 2025/2026 local cruise season, now is the perfect time to experience the magic of cruising. If you've booked your first cruise (or you are seriously considering it) – congratulations, you're about to embark on an unforgettable journey filled with adventure, relaxation and endless entertainment.
Here are 15 essential tips to help you make the most of your experience, from prepping and packing to your final sunset at sea.
Trip preparation: Packing and pre-cruise essentials
1. Pack smart, pack light
While MSC Opera has plenty of storage, overpacking can make your cabin feel cluttered. Opt for versatile clothing, comfortable shoes for excursions and don't forget formal attire for elegant evenings.
2. Know what's not allowed
Leave behind prohibited items like irons, candles and drones. Most essentials, like hairdryers and bathrobes, are provided in your cabin.
3. Print and prepare your e-ticket
Boarding is a breeze with your MSC Cruise e-ticket or boarding pass. This document contains all your essential travel details, luggage tags and itinerary information.
4. Pre-book shore excursions and special packages
Popular excursions sell out fast! Booking early not only secures your spot but often saves you money compared to purchasing onboard. Consider adding a Fun Pass for extra onboard activities at a discount.
5. Set up your cruise card and payment method
MSC Cruises operates cash-free. Link a credit card to your cruise card for easy onboard purchases or make a cash deposit at guest services when you board.

Onboard experience: Dining, entertainment and more
6. Enjoy unlimited dining options.
You can eat as much or as little as you like, from breakfast buffets to gourmet dinners. Remember, all buffet and main restaurant meals are always included in your cruise fare.
7. Take advantage of drinks packages.
Water, coffee and tea are complimentary, but sodas, alcohol and specialty drinks require a package upgrade. If you plan to indulge, consider purchasing a drinks package that will work for you, before your cruise, for great savings.
8. Stay connected (if you must!) Wi-Fi isn't free, so if staying online is important, purchase an Internet package in advance for the best rates (up to 20% savings). Otherwise, embrace the digital detox and enjoy the ocean breeze.
9. Catch Broadway-style shows and nightlife for free. MSC Cruises offers world-class entertainment – live performances, comedy shows and even thrilling casinos – all included in your cruise fare. No extra ticket required!
10. Embrace the fun – day and night.
From water parks to arcades, mini golf to shuffleboard, there's never a dull moment. Many activities are free, while some require a Fun Pass—so plan accordingly.
Shore excursions: Making the most of every port
11. Plan ahead for the best excursions.
Booking shore excursions in advance guarantees availability and better pricing. Whether it's snorkelling in turquoise waters or exploring historical ruins, don't miss out!
12. Dress comfortably for exploration.
Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a small backpack for essentials will keep you prepared for any adventure ashore.
Extra insider tips to elevate your cruise
13. Check the daily cruise planner.
Your daily planner (delivered to your cabin or available on the MSC app) highlights scheduled activities, entertainment and dining specials – don't miss out on exclusive events!
14. Budget for extras but stick to a plan.
While plenty is included, extras – like spa treatments, tickets purchased in themed gaming venues, Wi-Fi and specialty dining – can add up. Set a budget to avoid surprises on your final bill.
15. Relax and enjoy every moment.
Cruises are designed for enjoyment—whether that means lounging by the pool, indulging in gourmet meals, or dancing under the stars. Knowing what's included, what you may want to plan ahead for and how to get the most out of every moment will make your cruise one to remember.

Can Thriston Lawrence tame Oakmont and break SA's Major drought at US Open?

Thriston Lawrence of South Africa plays an approach during the third round of the 125th US Open at Oakmont. Image: Andrew Redington / Getty Images via AFP South Africa's Thriston Lawrence remains in the hunt ahead of the final round of the 2025 US Open at Oakmont Country Club. Lawrence, who finished fourth at the 2024 Open Championship, shot a level-par 70 during Saturday's third round to remain at one-over for the tournament. He is now five shots adrift of solo leader Sam Burns going into the Sunday's fourth round. Christiaan Bezuidenhout, meanwhile, is tied for 11th on four-over par after shooting a one-over 71 in the third round. It's been 13 years since a South African last won a Major, with four-time Ernie Els the last player to achieve the feat when he won the Open Championship in 2012. Burns out-dueled fellow American J.J. Spaun down the stretch to grab a one-stroke lead, setting the stage for a Sunday showdown at punishing Oakmont. Video Player is loading. Burns, whose most recent win came at the 2023 WGC Match Play, and Spaun each found the right rough at 18 but Burns made the green and two-putted for par while Burns found a bunker and two-putted for bogey. "I didn't drive the ball as well as I would have liked, but when I got out of position I did a good job of getting myself back in the fairway," Burns said. I was able to convert some of those and kept the momentum going. That was key to the round." Spaun, whose only PGA Tour win came at the 2022 Texas Open, shot 69 and was happy despite the setback at 18. "This is the best I've played in my career, for sure," Spaun said. "I'm just happy I'm still within shouting distance - 18 is just a tough hole if you're out of position. Bogeys happen at Oakmont." Scott, the 2013 Masters champion, birdied three of the last six holes to fire a 67. The 44-year-old can be the second-oldest US Open winner after American Hale Irwin, who was 45 when he won in 1990. Scott would also have the longest gap between major titles. "It would be super fulfilling," Scott said. "I really haven't been in this kind of position for five or six years. "But if I were to come away with it tomorrow, it would be a hell of a round of golf and an exclamation point on my career." Hovland blasted out of a bunker to set up a tap-in bogey at 17, but made bogey from a bunker at 18 to shoot 70. "I've got a chance tomorrow. If I shoot a low round then anything can happen," Hovland said. "But there's a lot of good players around me ... That forces me to play some really good golf." The four will play in the last two pairings once again on Sunday in a tension-packed final round for the $4.3 million top prize.

Bianca Amato's journey to become a queen of theatre

Amato's focus is now on rebuilding a strong theatre audience in South Africa. Bianca Amato walked away from Broadway, turned down a steady stream of American screen work, and left behind a career many would still be trying to break into. She came home. Not because the work had dried up. On the contrary, she came back to South Africa to raise a family, and to do the kind of work she wanted to do. Amato spent 15 years in the United States after leaving South Africa in 2002. She returned about eight years ago. 'I left South Africa just after 9/11,' she said. 'And I had an extraordinary time.' During those years, she performed in The Coast of Utopia and Macbeth on Broadway, and featured in Arcadia, Neva, The Broken Heart, Private Lives, and King Lear. She worked with respected directors and actors across New York and regional stages. Her screen credits include a guest appearance on Sex and the City and a lead in Powers on the PlayStation Network. In addition to theatre and television, she voiced more than forty audiobooks, including Philippa Gregory's historical novels and Diane Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale, which reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list. 'I was on Broadway a few times' 'I did a lot, a lot of theatre in New York and regionally around the United States,' she said. 'Also, I was on Broadway a few times. I worked with amazing people.' She chose to leave that all behind. 'I left New York at a point where my career was really buzzing. I made a choice to come home. It was the right choice for me, it was a strong choice and I'm happy to be here, all the more so now,' she said. 'I wanted to have a baby and for my husband and I it felt really, really appropriate to be back home in South Africa with our family and with support and the community that we have here.' ALSO READ: Film extraordinary: Bono's Stories of Surrender Before her international career, Amato was already a familiar face in South Africa. From 1998 to 2001, she played Philippa De Villiers in Isidingo, then one of the country's most watched shows. Her character's relationship with mine manager Derek Nyathi, played by Hlomla Dandala, marked the first interracial romance portrayed on South African television. 'It was wonderful to be part of the slow but healthy process that changed people's attitudes,' she said at the time. The role earned her an Avante Award for best actress. 'I put on my big girl pants' Returning to South Africa meant reassessing what kind of roles were available locally. 'It has been a challenge to find the kind of work that I was able to do over there here,' she said. 'So, I have had to put on my big girl pants and say, 'right, let's create that work then'.' That decision led to the founding of The Quickening Theatre Company with Ken Siewe Chabalala, Charlotte Butler and Paige Bonnen. 'Our objective is to bring really entertaining and beautifully penned and excellently crafted theatre to the South African audiences,' she said. 'We are very excited about the projects that we're going to do and the projects we are doing at the moment.' Part of her focus now is on rebuilding a strong theatre audience. 'What we haven't done in South Africa for a long time is to keep cultivating an audience who appreciates things that may ask a little bit more of you as an audience, that's not completely escapist,' she said. 'But there are so many gorgeous and funny and delicious and interesting and thought-provoking plays out there.' Nothing like really good theatre She said that live performance stands out from other forms of entertainment. 'When you put on a show on Netflix, you're aiming for something that's going to transport you and entertain you. The same can be said for a really good piece of theatre. It's just that it's old-fashioned in that it's live, right there in front of you.' She added that there is a strong case to be made for this. 'I wonder now, given that AI is everywhere, whether or not we're going to start hungering for the fact that we'll know that the person in front of us actually is flesh and blood,' she said. Stasie Kombuis owner reacts to drunk Presley Chweneyagae clips

Stasie Kombuis owner, Thato Jele, has shut down social media commentary about his lifestyle lounge being a bad influence on the late actor Presley Chweneyagae. The 40-year-old was laid to rest last weekend after a shock death following 'respiratory complications'. At his funeral, close pal Warren Masemola hinted that Presley loved partying and alcohol and would often surround himself with 'bad friends'. He also implied that establishments like Stasie Kombuis kept the star away from his family. Speaking to Kaya FM, Stasie Kombuis, owner Thato Jele, responded to commentary that his lifestyle lounge and bar was a bad influence on Presley Chweneyagae. He said, 'Presley was a beautiful human being, he loved my place. He personally told me that I was on the right track and that I was running a beautiful place.' Jele also addressed several video clips of an intoxicated Presley Chweneyagae at a groove, which South Africans have presumed to be at Stasie Kombuis. He continued: 'We are very big on family. We do not embarrass our clients. None of the videos that are trending online were taken at my place. 'My place is not a shebeen or a drinking spot. It's home to me and to my clients. That's why people keep coming back. A clip of Presley Chweneyagae intoxicated at a groove has resurfaced after his death. Images via X During his tribute to Presley Chweneyagae, fellow actor Warren Masemola claimed the pair often quarrelled about prioritising family over bad friends. He said at the star's funeral last weekend: 'My friend and I fought a lot. I don't understand people who don't fight with their friends and the people they love. Warren hinted at Presley Chweneyagae's love of partying and booze. He recalled a time when he travelled to Pretoria to pick up Presley – presumably at the request of his wife – as 'he was being a nuisance' He told funeral-goers: 'He dodged me, I found him at Stasie Kombuis [popular groove in Pretoria].' Warren added that he found Presley with a group of friends who didn't have his best interests at heart. He added: 'You owe it to yourself to talk to the one you love and say, 'Please, you have children at home. Go home. Your family needs you.'
