A new biodegradable film developed by scientists in China and Australia could slash building energy use by up to 20 per cent and keep surfaces up to 9.2C cooler without using any electricity, according to a new study.
The material is made from polylactic acid – a bioplastic derived from plants – and passively reflects nearly all solar radiation while allowing heat from inside buildings to escape into the sky.
Researchers from Zhengzhou University and the University of South Australia say the metafilm can be an alternative to air conditioning systems, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions in cities.
'Our metafilm offers an environmentally friendly alternative to air-conditioning,' Yangzhe Hou, lead author of the study and a PhD candidate at the University of South Australia and Zhengzhou University.
'The material reflects nearly all solar radiation but also allows internal building heat to escape directly into outer space. This enables the building to stay cooler than the surrounding air, even under direct sunlight.'
In testing, the film passively reduced temperatures by as much as 9.2C during peak sunlight hours, according to the study published in Cell Reports Physical Science on Wednesday. On an average, it kept surfaces 4.9C cooler during daytime and 5.1C cooler at night.
Unlike conventional cooling systems, the film requires no electricity or mechanical components.
The metafilm also withstood harsh weather conditions, maintaining its cooling performance even after 120 hours of exposure to strong acid and the equivalent of eight months of ultraviolet exposure outdoors, according to the study.
It continued to cool surfaces by up to 6.5C under those conditions.
'Most existing passive radiative cooling systems rely on petrochemical-based polymers or ceramics that raise environmental concerns,' Dr Xianhu Liu from Zhengzhou University said.
'By using biodegradable PLA, we are presenting a green alternative that offers high solar reflectance, strong thermal emission, sustainability and durability.'
Computer simulations showed using the metafilm on buildings in hot cities such as Lhasa in China 's Tibet region could reduce annual energy consumption by over 20 per cent.
'This isn't just a lab-scale success,' Professor Jun Ma from the University of South Australia claimed. 'Our film is scalable, durable and completely degradable. This research aims to contribute to sustainable development by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and exploring feasible pathways to improve human comfort while minimising environmental impact.'
The team is now looking into large-scale manufacturing and possible applications in transportation, agriculture, electronics and biomedical products, including cooling wound dressings.
Passive cooling technologies have gained traction in recent years, with various teams experimenting with ceramic coatings, reflective paints, and polymer-based films. However, many such innovations have faced limitations around cost, fragility, or environmental impact. Other recent breakthroughs include an ultrawhite starch-based film that passively cools surfaces by reflecting 96 per cent of sunlight and a ceramic roof coating that withstands extreme temperatures while reducing cooling loads by 20 per cent.

Exposure to light at night, from electronic devices, street lamps or poorly drawn curtains, is never good for your sleep. Now scientists from Australia say the disruption that light causes to the body's natural clock, known as the circadian rhythm, could have deadly consequences. Researchers took data from nearly 90,000 UK participants, who were given wrist-worn light sensors to wear as they slept. The researchers then mapped their light exposure during the night to diagnoses of different types of heart disease, including coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and stroke. Those who were exposed to more light at night were found to be at higher risk of developing all five conditions, regardless of the length or quality of their sleep. Participants who had the highest light exposure were 56 per cent more likely to experience heart failure, and 47 per cent more likely to have a heart attack. This group was also 32 per cent more likely to develop coronary artery disease and 30 per cent more likely to have a stroke. Women with high night-light exposure were more likely to experience heart failure and coronary heart disease, whereas younger participants in this category were at greater risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm problem. The effects of light exposure could be due to its disruption of the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, the researchers suggested. This disturbance to the body clock could trigger metabolic and vascular changes that elevate the risk of various heart conditions. To reduce your risk, the study's lead author, Flinders University researcher Dr Daniel P. Windred, said you should try to avoid night light as much as possible. 'Current recommendations for preventing cardiovascular diseases include a healthy diet, physical activity and avoiding alcohol and tobacco,' he said. 'This is the first study of light exposure patterns and incident cardiovascular diseases, establishing night light as an important new risk factor.'

SAN FRANCISCO, July 11 (Reuters) - A bipartisan pair of U.S. senators sent a letter to Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab CEO Jensen Huang on Friday about an upcoming trip to China, warning the CEO to refrain from meeting with companies that are suspected of undermining U.S. chip export controls. The letter from Republican Senator Jim Banks and Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren asked Huang to also abstain from meeting with representatives of companies that are working with the People's Republic of China's military or intelligence bodies and are named on the U.S. restricted export list. "We are worried that your trip to the PRC could legitimize companies that cooperate closely with the Chinese military or involve discussing exploitable gaps in U.S. export controls," the senators wrote. Huang planned to visit China on Friday. An Nvidia spokesperson said, "American wins" when its technology sets "the global standard," and that China has one of the largest bodies of software developers in the world. AI software "should run best on the U.S. technology stack, encouraging nations worldwide to choose America," the spokesperson said. In May at the Computex trade show in Taipei, Huang praised President Donald Trump's decision to scrap some artificial intelligence chip export controls and described the prior diffusion rules as a failure. China creates remote-controlled cyborg BEES that could be used for secret spy missions

Chinese scientists have successfully turned bees into cyborgs by inserting controllers into their brains. The device, which weighs less than a pinch of salt, is strapped to the back of a worker bee and connected to the insect's brain through small needles. In tests the device worked nine times out of 10 and the bees obeyed the instructions to turn left or right, the researchers said. The cyborg bees could be used in rescue missions – or in covert operations as military scouts. The tiny device can be equipped with cameras, listening devices and sensors that allow the insects to collect and record information. Given their small size they could also be used for discreet military or security operations, such as accessing small spaces without arousing suspicion. Zhao Jieliang, a professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology, led the development of the technology. It works by delivering electrical pulses to the insect's optical lobe – the visual processing centre in the brain – which then allows researchers to direct its flight. The study was recently published in the Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering, and was first reported by the South China Morning Post. 'Insect-based robots inherit the superior mobility, camouflage capabilities and environmental adaptability of their biological hosts,' Professor Zhao and his colleagues wrote. 'Compared to synthetic alternatives, they demonstrate enhanced stealth and extended operational endurance, making them invaluable for covert reconnaissance in scenarios such as urban combat, counterterrorism and narcotics interdiction, as well as critical disaster relief operations.' Several other countries, including the US and Japan, are also racing to create cyborg insects. While Professor Zhao's team has made great strides in advancing the technology, several hurdles still remain. For one, the current batteries aren't able to last very long, but any larger would mean the packs are too heavy for the bees to carry. The same device cannot easily be used on different insects as each responds to signals on different parts of their bodies. Before this, the lightest cyborg controller came from Singapore and was triple the weight. It also follows the creation of cyborg dragonflies and cockroaches, with researchers across the world racing to develop the most advanced technology. Scientists in Japan have previously reported a remote-controlled cockroach that wears a solar-powered 'backpack'. The cockroach is intended to enter hazardous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged. The cockroaches are still alive, but wires attached to their two 'cerci' - sensory organs on the end of their abdomens - send electrical impulses that cause the insect to move right or left. In November 2014, researchers at North Carolina State University fitted cockroaches with electrical backpacks complete with tiny microphones capable of detecting faint sounds. The idea is that cyborg cockroaches, or 'biobots', could enter crumpled buildings hit by earthquakes, for example, and help emergency workers find survivors. 'In a collapsed building, sound is the best way to find survivors,' said Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University. 'The goal is to use the biobots with high-resolution microphones to differentiate between sounds that matter - like people calling for help - from sounds that don't matter - like a leaking pipe. 'Once we've identified sounds that matter, we can use the biobots equipped with microphone arrays to zero-in on where those sounds are coming from.' The 'backpacks' control the robo-roach's movements because they are wired to the insect's cerci - sensory organs that cockroaches usually use to feel if their abdomens brush against something. By electrically stimulating the cerci, cockroaches can be prompted to move in a certain direction. In fact, they have been programmed to seek out sound. One type of 'backpack' is equipped with an array of three directional microphones to detect the direction of the sound and steer the biobot in the right direction towards it. Another type is fitted with a single microphone to capture sound from any direction, which can be wirelessly transmitted, perhaps in the future to emergency workers. They 'worked well' in lab tests and the experts have developed technology that can be used as an 'invisible fence' to keep the biobots in a certain area such as a disaster area, the researchers announced at the IEEE Sensors 2014 conference in Valencia, Spain.
