CM calls for reflection on Baloch conflict
Balochistan Chief Minister, Mir Sarfraz Bugti, addressing the Balochistan High Court Bar Association on Thursday, called upon Baloch intellectuals to critically assess the outcomes of decades-long conflicts and guide the younger generation wisely. He questioned whether the prolonged armed struggle and separatist rhetoric had brought any prosperity or merely deepened the province's hardships.
Bugti recalled that the violence in the region escalated following the killing of Justice Nawaz Marri near a courthouse, which led to an FIR against Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri and his sons. While Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri surrendered to authorities, his sons chose exile, giving rise to what later became known as the "angry Baloch" movement. The chief minister asserted that this movement had only inflicted pain on the province and its people.
He acknowledged that despite various conspiracies, Pakistan's integrity has remained intact and its institutions have grown stronger. Bugti pointed out that Quetta is now peaceful, though remnants of separatist violence persist in distorted narratives. He criticized elements who once burned the national flag and promoted separatism but now pose as rights activists, calling this a betrayal of constitutional values.
The chief minister condemned the glorification of armed struggle and voiced concern over some lawyers providing legal support to those accused of terrorism, warning that such actions undermine the Constitution.
Highlighting the role of foreign interference, Bugti stated that hostile agencies have exploited the region to incite unrest in Balochistan. He urged the legal community to uphold the rule of law and become advocates for peace.
In a positive move, Bugti announced financial assistance of Rs50 million for the High Court Bar Association. He also introduced several welfare schemes for lawyers, including housing projects.

Zardari roots for broad national consensus
President Asif Ali Zardari has said the country urgently needs political stability and broad national consensus, stressing that all democratic forces must work together to ensure progress and prosperity. Chaudhry Manzoor proposed that the minimum wage be increased to Rs50,000 and EOBI pensions by 100 per cent. Zardari expressed hope that the government will consider the welfare of labourers and workers as a top priority in the budget. He said society cannot progress without giving relief to labourers.

Selection of CEC chief, ECP members: PTI nominates members for parliamentary body
ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday formally nominated its members for the parliamentary committee tasked with selecting the new chief election commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). In a statement on X, the opposition leader in National Assembly Omar Ayub posted a June 2 letter addressed to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, in which PTI nominated four National Assembly members and two senators for the committee. The nominees include MNAs Asad Qaiser, Gohar Ali Khan, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Latif Khosa, along with senators Shibli Faraz and Allama Raja Nasir. The move comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited the opposition leader for consultations on appointing a new CEC, following the expiration of the terms of the current CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja and two ECP members from Sindh and Balochistan on January 26, 2025. The premier's letter highlighted that despite their terms ending, the incumbents have continued to perform duties under Article 215 of the Constitution. According to Article 213 of the Constitution, the prime minister and opposition leader must send three names for each position to the president by mutual consensus. If no consensus is reached, names are submitted to a 12-member parliamentary committee equally representing the treasury and opposition benches, which then recommends a name to the president. The PTI's nominations follow procedural consultations within the party and were announced a day after the prime minister's invitation for dialogue with the opposition. The nominations are part of the constitutionally mandated process under Article 213(2B) for appointing the CEC and members from Sindh and Balochistan. The appointments are pending amid deep political polarisation in the country, with little prior engagement reported between government and opposition leaders on the matter. PTI had earlier filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in March, challenging the delay in appointing a new CEC. The petition named the federal government, Senate chairman, National Assembly speaker, and ECP as respondents, alleging constitutional violations due to the delay. It requested the court to compel relevant authorities to form the parliamentary committee and hold meaningful consultations under Article 213. Meanwhile, two other ECP members from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continue their terms until 2027, ensuring partial continuity within the commission. There exists no need to launch large-scale operation in province: Bugti
ISLAMABAD: Chief Minister of Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti has ruled out the need for a large-scale military operation in the province, stating that Pakistan will thwart every attack orchestrated by the so-called 'Fitna-e-Hindustan.' Addressing at a press conference in Islamabad, Bugti accused India of resorting to proxy warfare following its military failures. 'After suffering defeat, India is now relying on proxies. The enemy is waging a proxy war against us and dreams of destabilising Pakistan's rising economy,' he said. Bugti said India's 'evil designs' have been exposed, and the state holds 'solid evidence' against Fitna-e-Hindustan. He claimed the recent attack in Khuzdar, in which children were martyred, was carried out through these proxies and backed by the Indian intelligence agency RAW. 'RAW is fully supporting Fitna-e-Hindustan and is providing intelligence to their handlers. These terrorists should not be associated with the Baloch people,' he emphasised. The chief minister reiterated that all acts of terrorism in Balochistan have been RAW-funded since day one. 'There is no need for any large military operation in Balochistan. We will successfully foil every attack launched by Fitna-e-Hindustan,' Bugti asserted. He also criticised Indian media for spreading false reports, including a fabricated story about the destruction of Karachi Port. 'Fitna-e-Hindustan is part of a conspiracy to put Pakistan's peace at risk,' he added. 'India was defeated on the battlefield, and the Pakistan Armed Forces gave a befitting response to Indian aggression,' Bugti said. Commenting on internal matters, he said that political dialogue is always possible with political parties, but issues such as missing persons are often used as propaganda against the state.
