Tolichowki man duped of ₹1.4 lakh after calling fake Blinkit helpline

The Hindu8 hours ago
A 64-year-old man from Tolichowki was duped of ₹1.4 lakh in a cyber fraud incident after he reached out to a fake Blinkit customer care number found on the internet.
The incident was reported on August 4, shortly after the victim had placed an order for groceries through the Blinkit app. When he noticed that one of the items was missing from the delivery, he searched online for the app's customer care contact and dialled a number he believed to be genuine.
The number turned out to be one that was operated by fraudsters. The caller instructed him to contact a second number on WhatsApp, where he was asked to share his screen and open the PhonePe application. Trusting the instructions, the victim followed the steps, including switching the default payment account linked to his UPI.
Soon after, he began receiving SMS alerts indicating multiple unauthorised debits from his bank account. In total, ₹1,40,024 had been siphoned off before he realised he had been targeted in a phishing scam.
The victim lodged a complaint with the cyber crime wing of the Hyderabad Police. A case was booked and an investigation is underway.

Lucknow: The wife of a former personal secretary to a union minister alleged sustained harassment, threats, and blackmail by a man claiming to be her former acquaintance, prompting police to register a case under multiple serious charges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The FIR was lodged by her husband at Gomtinagar police station on Thursday. As per the FIR, the accused made an internet call on July 10, threatening the complainant to divorce his wife or face public defamation through the circulation of obscene photos and videos. The caller claimed he had a past romantic relationship with the woman and was in regular contact with her via WhatsApp and audio calls. The accused allegedly visited the couple's home on May 25–26, handed over a SIM card and a mobile phone registered in his name, and later returned on May 27 with a firearm, issuing caste-based slurs and death threats. He claimed to have taken the woman to view land and spoke of leveraging her business — reportedly worth over Rs 7 crore annually — to fund his real estate ambitions. The complainant stated that his wife, now under psychiatric treatment, revealed being physically assaulted, molested, and robbed of cash and jewellery during the May visit. She also disclosed receiving the mobile phone through Flipkart, allegedly used to control her communication. Supporting the complaint, the man submitted call records, screenshots, and medical reports. He called it a planned conspiracy to destabilise his family and seize their assets. ACP, Gomtinagar, BN Singh, said that an FIR was registered under the charges of BNS Section 74 (outrage modesty of woman), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (provoke breach of peace), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation), 305 (theft in dwelling), 324 (4) (mischief) against the accused and the number.

Retired CRPF sub-inspector shot dead in home in Rewari village

H isar: Two unidentified assailants barged into the home of a retired CRPF sub-inspector and shot him dead in Zainabad village of Haryana's Rewari district late Wednesday night. Police said Nihal Singh was sleeping in an outer room when the suspects, who arrived on a motorcycle, knocked around 2am. As the 65-year-old opened the door, the attackers pushed their way inside, fired at him and fled through a door leading to an open plot at the rear of the house. Nihal's brother, Ramchandra, said the escape route used by the attackers indicates they were familiar with the house layout, suggesting a possible link to someone known to the family. According to the family, Nihal suffered a paralysis attack in 2019. He retired from the CRPF in March 2018. Nihal belonged to a family with a military background—his elder brother is a retired Army officer, while his younger brother retired from the BSF. The family handed over a CCTV footage clip to police that showed the two suspects approaching the house. In one frame, one of them is seen with a weapon, and another bowing his head at a nearby temple—without a mask at that point. Satish Kumar, in-charge, Khol police station, said a murder case was registered against two unknown people on a complaint filed by the victim's son, Amit. Villagers suspect that the murder might be linked to Amit, who operates a service station near Dahina village bus stand. They claim Amit had a rivalry with a few individuals and received death threats via WhatsApp calls over the past two months. "Nihal was a well respected man in the village," said a local resident, adding, "It seems the attackers came for the son, but the father became the victim."
