Substitution against Inter left Barcelona star frustrated

Yahoo01-05-2025

Barcelona's thrilling 3-3 draw against Inter Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final offered no shortage of drama, with Lamine Yamal's brilliance rightly taking the headlines.
However, a less-noticed moment involving Dani Olmo has sparked subtle tension within the squad and raised questions about the midfielder's role under Hansi Flick.
Olmo, who started in an advanced midfield position alongside Frenkie De Jong and Pedri, was taken off in the 68th minute and replaced by Fermin Lopez.
While the substitution may have appeared routine, the Spanish international's reaction suggested otherwise.
According to SPORT, he exchanged handshakes with both Fermin and Flick, but then gestured with clear frustration, raising his hand in what appeared to be a visible sign of disapproval.
Whether this was directed at the substitution itself or at his own performance remains unclear, but it was a moment that didn't go unnoticed.
Statistically, Olmo's game was not poor. He managed two key passes, recorded an 88% pass completion rate, attempted two shots on target, and completed one successful dribble from two attempts.
He also drew three fouls. However, he lost the ball eight times, and his overall influence was limited by Inter Milan's compact and physical defensive shape, which clogged the central areas and left him with very little space to operate.
For what it is worth, this is not the first time Olmo has been subbed relatively early in matches. Against Mallorca, Flick withdrew him in the 62nd minute. In the Copa del Rey, it was the 65th.
There seems to be a pattern emerging, one that the player himself is likely noticing.
Olmo's evident displeasure may stem from repeatedly being one of the first players sacrificed in tightly contested matches, despite his pedigree and potential to influence high-stakes games.

(Image: Mike Egerton/PA Wire) NEWCASTLE United are in talks to sign Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford, according to reports. The 22-year-old Burnley shot stopper, from Greysouthen, is reportedly the subject of interest from Eddie Howe's Magpies, who are looking to bolster their ranks after confirming their place in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. Advertisement According to various reports, Newcastle United have begun discussions for the Cumbrian goalkeeper, with Burnley valuing his services at £40 million. The interest in the former Carlisle United academy man comes off the back of an impressive 2024/25 season, which saw the Cumbrian achieve a record-breaking tally of Championship clean sheets as the Clarets won promotion back to the Premier League. Trafford was also included in Thomas Tuchel's latest England squad as the Three Lions recorded a 1-0 victory against Andorra and were defeated 3-1 by Senegal.

Verstappen seeks record fourth Canada win and trouble-free weekend

Max Verstappen is on the cusp of a ban after driving into George Russell in Spain (Pierre-Philippe MARCOU) Max Verstappen will be seeking a record fourth consecutive Canadian Grand Prix triumph this weekend and a trouble-free race that helps him banish the threat of a suspension following his "rash" moment in Spain. The four-time world champion goes into Sunday's race knowing that, if he collects one more penalty point on his racing license, he will automatically miss the Austrian Grand Prix later this month. Advertisement That, according to his great mentor, Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko, "would be a catastrophe". "He mustn't do anything wrong over the next two weekends and, of course, he will be told not to do anything rash," the Austrian told The 27-year-old, who lies third in the drivers' championship with 137 points, behind leader Oscar Piastri on 186 and his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris on 176, was penalised at the Spanish Grand Prix for ramming into George Russell's Mercedes. "He admitted it was a deliberate action that "should not have happened" following the race, won with supreme self-control by Piastri, but now must survive two Grands Prix without incident before the points total on his license is reduced. Advertisement "Barcelona was disappointing for us," admitted Verstappen. "Although we gave it everything, it was not the way we would have liked the race to turn out... "We are looking forward to Canada –- the track is unique, has some old school kerbs and plenty of opportunities for overtaking." For Verstappen, the return to a high-speed circuit where brakes are tested to the limit may be welcome as he and Red Bull seek to slow runaway leaders McLaren in the title race. - Winless Mercedes - Mercedes and Ferrari will also hope for encouragement at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve where a big crowd is likely to give home hope Lance Stroll support as he returns after a medical procedure to reduce wrist and hand pain. Advertisement Mercedes technical boss James Allison said: "It's a track where we've tended to go well in the past and I'm looking forward to it. We have a few new bits to take and we'll see how we get on." The Silver Arrows are winless since the Las Vegas Grand Prix last year while McLaren, remarkably given their current supremacy, have not won in Canada since 2012 when seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton claimed one of his seven wins at the venue, a record that he shares with Michael Schumacher. Ferrari, always well-supported by the knowledgeable and passionate crowd, last won in Montreal in 2018, but will need a swing in fortune to secure another success, although the circuit has always been a favourite for Hamilton, who claimed his maiden win there in 2007. However, Hamilton arrives in Canada without a single podium finish this year and in need of a boost as he struggles with his car amid much paddock debate about the wisdom of his decision to leave Mercedes, where he won six of his seven world titles. Advertisement For the 40-year-old Briton, it is not yet a crisis –- he retains total support from Ferrari and team boss Fred Vasseur –- but after nine of the 24 races this year, a long way from being a success. The American Haas team will mark their 200th race by switching to a grey livery that recalls their original colours in 2016. str/jc

Five of the stars missing at the Club World Cup

FIFA's inaugural expanded Club World Cup in the United States has one billion dollars of prize money on the line but will be missing some of the game's star names. AFP Sport highlights five players who will not be lighting up stadiums across the United States once it gets underway this weekend: Advertisement Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) Liverpool finished as English champions, but like Spain's Barcelona and Italy's Napoli, will not be at the Club World Cup, because of the convoluted qualification process. That means Egyptian winger Salah, who broke the Premier League record for goal involvements, with 29 strikes and 18 assists, misses out. After a tiring season in which he faded in the latter months Salah might not be too upset about having a summer off. The winger posted a photo of himself sunbathing by the beach on Instagram. However it will be a shame that African football icon Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk and others miss out on the chance of a potential rematch against their Champions League conquerors Paris Saint-Germain. Advertisement Liverpool transfer target Florian Wirtz will also be absent, as his side Bayer Leverkusen did not qualify. Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) No player in world football this season has offered more excitement than Barcelona's 17-year-old star Lamine Yamal. The Spain winger has been in sensational form for his club this season and is one of the candidates to win the Ballon d'Or. Yamal's thrilling dribbling and penchant for the spectacular make him one of the biggest draws in world football at the moment. He is often compared to former Barcelona great Lionel Messi, but because of the Spanish champions' absence, may have missed out on his only chance to face the Argentina star, who will be there with Inter Miami. Advertisement Barcelona's Raphinha, midfield maestro Pedri and veteran striker Robert Lewandowski are others who will be missed. Cristiano Ronaldo (Al Nassr) Messi will also not go up against his long-time rival Ronaldo in the US. The Portuguese striker, 40, was reported to be looking for a way to play in the tournament. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had suggested Ronaldo might move from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr to a team who had reached the event, saying that "discussions" were being held over it. Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, who won the Nations League with Portugal last weekend, indicated after the game however he was set to stay at Al Nassr. Advertisement "Some teams reached out to me," the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star revealed last Saturday on the eve of the Nations League final. "Some made sense and others did not, but you can't try and do everything. You can't catch every ball." Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) Champions League semi-finalists Arsenal are another team to miss out and after finishing the season trophyless, the Club World Cup would have been a chance to win some silverware. England international Saka's only club trophy, excluding the FA Community Shield, was an FA Cup win with Arsenal in 2020. Mikel Arteta's side showed this season they have improved to the point where they are in contention for major honours, including knocking out Real Madrid in the Champions League, but came up just short. Advertisement For a player of his quality, who has spent six seasons playing regularly at the top level, Saka could do with expanding his medal collection. Arsenal will be disappointed to miss out on the prize money too, as they try to overhaul Liverpool and Manchester City, who have dominated the English game in recent seasons. Neymar (Santos) Brazilian icon Neymar struggled with injury at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and returned to Santos in January 2025, hoping to get fit and firing ahead of next summer's World Cup. The 33-year-old forward, despite fading with age, is still one of the biggest names in the game and his absence is also a blow in a commercial sense. Advertisement "Neymar, what can I say about him? He's an outstanding player, who, for me, in my football cycle, is in the top three, with Cristiano and Messi," said Brazil midfielder Casemiro. With organisers struggling to sell tickets, Neymar's presence would have been a boon. rbs/pi
