Geeky Gadgets19-07-2025
Apple's upcoming releases include iOS 26 Beta 4, the first public beta of iOS 26, and the Release Candidate (RC) version of iOS 18.6. If you're considering testing the latest iOS software, you may find yourself weighing the pros and cons of installing iOS 26 Beta 4 versus waiting for the public beta. Your decision will largely depend on factors such as release timing, software stability, and your level of comfort with beta testing. The video below from iReviews gives us more details.
Watch this video on YouTube. Release Timeline: When Are These Updates Available?
The timing of these releases is a critical factor in deciding which version to install. iOS 26 Beta 4 is expected to be available on July 21, 2025, while the public beta is anticipated to follow shortly after, likely on July 22 or 23. Apple's typical release pattern involves launching public betas one to two days after their corresponding developer betas.
If you're eager to experience the latest features as soon as possible, iOS 26 Beta 4 offers a slight advantage in timing. However, if you prefer a more refined and polished experience, waiting for the public beta may be the better choice. The public beta is generally more stable, as it incorporates feedback and fixes from earlier developer beta versions. Who Should Install iOS 26 Beta 4?
Your current setup and familiarity with beta testing will play a significant role in determining whether iOS 26 Beta 4 is the right choice for you. Consider the following scenarios: If you're already running iOS 26 Beta 3: Upgrading to Beta 4 is the logical next step. It provides the same software as the public beta but gives you earlier access to updates and features.
Upgrading to Beta 4 is the logical next step. It provides the same software as the public beta but gives you earlier access to updates and features. If you're new to beta testing and currently on iOS 18: You have the option to install Beta 4 immediately or wait a couple of days for the public beta. Both versions will receive regular updates aimed at addressing bugs and improving overall performance.
Ultimately, the decision comes down to how quickly you want to access the latest features and how comfortable you are with potential software issues. Beta 4 is ideal for those who prioritize early access, while the public beta may appeal to users seeking a slightly more stable experience. Stability and Features: What You Need to Know
When the public beta becomes available, it is generally stable enough for a wider audience. However, as with any beta software, occasional bugs, performance issues, or unexpected behavior may still occur. It's important to approach beta testing with the understanding that the software is a work in progress.
iOS 26 introduces several noteworthy features, including enhanced system stability and potential battery optimizations. These updates aim to improve the overall user experience, but beta versions may still present challenges such as reduced battery life or minor app compatibility issues. Despite these drawbacks, many users find the opportunity to explore new features ahead of the official release to be a worthwhile trade-off.
For those who rely heavily on their devices for work or other critical tasks, it may be wise to wait for the public beta or even the final release. On the other hand, if you enjoy experimenting with new technology and providing feedback to Apple, beta testing can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Making the Right Choice
Deciding between iOS 26 Beta 4 and the public beta ultimately depends on your priorities and tolerance for potential software issues. Consider the following options: Choose Beta 4: If you're comfortable with the risks associated with beta software and want earlier access to new features.
If you're comfortable with the risks associated with beta software and want earlier access to new features. Wait for the public beta: If you prefer a slightly more stable experience with fewer potential bugs and performance issues.
Both options provide an opportunity to engage with Apple's latest innovations and contribute valuable feedback that helps shape the final release. Whether you prioritize early access or stability, you'll be able to explore the future of iOS and enjoy its new features before the general public.

Target staff praise new anti-theft cases… and laugh at silly customers' mistake: 'So funny'

Target is changing how it tackles theft — and it should speed things up for shoppers. For years, the retailer has used locked plexiglass cases to protect high-theft items like toiletries, cleaning products, and even clothing. But the system — which often requires a staffer with a manager's key — has long frustrated customers who say it slows them down, especially when they're just trying to grab toothpaste, laundry detergent, or underwear. Now, the company is updating the system. So far, employees seem happy. Target employees on Reddit say the new design uses QR codes that can be unlocked with handheld devices carried by every floor associate, speeding up the process for everyone. 'This looks amazing, to be honest,' a Target employee said on Reddit. But the rollout isn't going perfectly. Some staff say the new system is confusing guests — especially since the QR codes are visible. They say leads shoppers to think that they can open it by scanning the code using their smartphone. Each cabinet includes a large red sign that asks customers 'Need Help?', but not every shopper seems to be taking the hint. 'We have these in my store,' another employee wrote on Reddit. 'It's so funny to me when guests try to scan it with their own phone and then get mad that it's not working.' Target didn't immediately respond to request for comment. For years, Target has been attempting to stop guests from using the five-finger discount in their stores. In 2023, CEO Brian Cornell said the company lost $500 million each year to shoplifters. To respond, the company has removed self-checkout registers from stores, closed high-theft locations, and added safety locks to hundreds of products — all in hopes of deterring sticky-fingered guests. But those changes have come at a cost. All plexiglass locks require Target team members to open the door. Customers can alert staff by pressing buttons or waving their hands near sensors such as this one For years, Target has set itself apart from other big-box retailers through high-end marketing, thoughtful lighting, and exclusive clothing lines. Locks on simple products often cut against that branding image. 'The problem with Target is a lot of decisions are being taken centrally without proper thought about what they mean on the ground,' Neil Saunders, a retail expert at GlobalData, previously told Security tags and hard locks also pose logistical issues for store staff. They make it harder to fold garments, merchandise accessories on racks, and fit products onto crowded shelves — adding to disarray on the sales floor. The disconnect between colorful merchandising and anti-theft hardware has only worsened the look of some apparel sections, independent retail experts told Customers have taken to social media to complain about hangers on the floor, ripped-out security tags, and unfolded T-shirt displays. 'I hate to pile on (pun intended), but Target's apparel merchandising and maintenance is an ongoing issue,' Carol Spieckerman, a retail consultant, previously said. 'When shoppers are shopping off the floor, it undermines Target's core brand promise of accessible style.'

How podcast star David Sacks' rise to popular Trump ally started with cigars in back rooms and a strategic $10M purchase

As a group of prominent MAGA influencers and podcasters met at Shelly's Back Room, the smoke-filled cigar bar just a block away from the White House in February, an unassuming white haired man in a tailored suit entered the room. It was David Sacks, Trump's newly anointed artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency czar. The event, hosted by prominent MAGA figure Mike Cernovich and bitcoin millionaire and entrepreneur Erik Fineman, featured podcaster Tim Pool, who hosted a live recording in one of the side rooms. The group watched as Sacks joined the podcast as he easily chatted with the younger, and less wealthy, hosts as they reflected on the 2024 election over drinks and cigars. Sacks, a billionaire Silicon Valley investor, bet big on President Trump in the Summer of 2024, well aware of stakes if then-President Joe Biden won reelection. His well-attended fundraiser at his mansion that summer in San Francisco sent a signal to Silicon Valley that it was okay to support Trump again, and even cool. Turns out it was a smart bet. Sacks is now one of the president's top advisers, by spearheading a Republican approach to tech policy and attracting a wide fanbase in Washington, DC 'He's incredible. He's been a great member of President Trump's administration and has helped us bring in many new friends to the MAGA movement,' Trump's media advisor and podcast guru Alex Bruesewitz told the Daily Mail about Sacks. Sacks, with his three poker buddies and co-hosts of the popular podcast 'All In,' had already emerged as celebrities in the podcast community as the four 'Besties' grew their show over the past few years. After that summer fundraiser, they hosted Trump on their pod for nearly an hour. The billionaire presidential candidate spoke easily in the forum of friends, joking about their status and wealth and discussed what he would do for the economy and tech industry. Sacks' gamble paid off as Trump appointed him to the administration after the election, putting him in an unprecedented position of influence in the burgeoning new industries. Tech leaders and cryptocurrency moguls celebrated at the exclusive 'Crypto Ball' in January to celebrate Trump's inauguration, as Sacks celebrated the new era of cryptocurrency expansion. 'The reign of terror against crypto is over,' Sacks proclaimed to the cheering crowd. Sack's new role thrust him into an unfamiliar social territory of Washington, DC. He moved quickly to integrate himself into Washington society, purchasing a $10 million property in Northwest DC. Despite his big real estate moves, his calm, unassuming personality serves him well in the city as he has been spotted at the Ned's club near the White House. 'David's super smart. I see him around in DC all the time,' Fineman told the Daily Mail. 'He can kind of blend in. He's a chill guy.' Groups of young DC professionals and staffers typically huddle to ask 'Is that him?' when he enters a room and gradually attracts attention from fans who cautiously approach him for a photo and a quick conversation. In May, Sacks moved to start his own private 'Executive Branch' club in Georgetown, as he explained the podcast he found the clubs in Washington, DC 'kind of old and stuffy.' 'We wanted to create something new, hipper, and Trump-aligned,' he said. The exclusive club costs as much as $500,000 to join, as Sacks promised it would be free of lobbyists and 'fake news' reporters for elite professionals. But Sacks does not spend his time there exclusively, as he is known to appear at other clubs and events around the city. This week, Sacks successfully celebrated a milestone achievement with the release of the administration's new 28-page AI Action Plan at a summit in Washington, DC, which was co-hosted by the All-in podcast. Sacks, together with Chamath Palihapitiya, Jason Calacanis, and David Friedberg created the All-In podcast during the coronavirus pandemic, as the quarantined friends started dabbling with the format to recreate the lifestyle they were used to before California locked down. Each host, wealthy tech investors in their own right, exhibit their own unique egos, backgrounds, and ideas on the show. Their political views vary so much that it often leads to dynamic, and at times fraught, conversations that appeal to anyone ranging from MAGA diehards to liberal vegans. The unique podcast formula quickly drew a passionate fan base that grew beyond Silicon Valley, as the four friends banter through issues facing the country and dabble in politics. It re-introduced Trump to their unique audience, demonstrating why it could be a good thing to put the bombastic former president back in the White House. The four friends united over their shared loathing of 'woke' policies that consumed the tech industry, especially censorship and defended the importance of classically liberal values like freedom of speech. At the summit in Washington, the podcast co-hosts interviewed Vice President JD Vance as well as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Department of Interior Doug Burgum President Trump also appeared at the summit to deliver the path forward for artificial intelligence, praising Sacks as a 'smart guy.' 'I did that podcast a year and a half ago and I said, 'This is something.' It was pretty new, pretty raw. Everybody I knew saw that podcast. I said, 'Well, he's got something pretty good. Who is that guy?'' Trump said. The four friends watched as the president prioritized issues they had talked about on their podcast for years, enshrining them into policy positions that will reverberate throughout the industry. 'It's actually very uncool, as somebody told me the other day. It's so uncool to be woke,' Trump said. 'I encourage all American companies to join us in rejecting poisonous Marxism in our technology.' With his wealth, podcast popularity, and newfound political clout, more people know who he is as Sacks has emerged as a significant figures in Washington in just six months. Sacks did not respond to a Daily Mail interview request. 'David Sacks is an incredibly successful businessman and visionary in emerging technologies. His service to the President and dedication to his work here is crucial to ensuring America is prepared to win the AI race and secure our global technological dominance,' White House deputy press secretary Harrison Fields told the Daily Mail. Sack's swift success demonstrates a stark contrast to other Silicon Valley geniuses who quickly sour on the bureaucracy and backstabbing in the swamp of Washington. As everyone in Trumpworld knows, success in one position can swiftly lead to future opportunities.
