Haverfordwest 'better prepared' for European bid

BBC News4 hours ago
Haverfordwest County begin their second Uefa Conference League adventure in three seasons against Floriana on Tuesday (18:30 BST) with boss Tony Pennock confident the Bluebirds are better prepared for the competition this time around.Haverfordwest claimed a memorable victory over North Macedonia's Shkendija in 2023-24, when they were playing in Europe for the first time in 22 years. Two years on, Pennock believes Haverfordwest have a greater chance of making a mark in the Conference League thanks to increased experience and depth in his squad.Pennock's men are in Malta for their first qualifying round first leg at the Centenary Stadium before the return fixture at Parc y Scarlets on Thursday, 17 July."We are better prepared than last time," Pennock said.
"A lot of our players were involved two years ago so they have that experience, and we are coming into this on the back of a really good season in the Cymru Premier."As a club, too, we knew all the things we needed to have in place for Europe, whereas that was all new for us two years ago."In 2024, Haverfordwest claimed the first European win in their history as they overcame Shkendija on penalties at the Cardiff City Stadium, before losing out to B36 Torshavn in the second qualifying round.
This year, a meeting with Kosovan side Ballkani is the prize on offer as Haverfordwest take on Floriana, who finished third in the Maltese league last season.Prize money in the competition is significant for Haverfordwest, who have earned around £280,000 for reaching this stage and will be around £170,000 more should they progress."Nobody can hide away from the fact that getting into Europe is financially rewarding, although you can get ties where a lot of the money goes on sorting out the trip and everything that goes with it," Pennock said."In fairness, the chairman has given us what we want in terms of flights and hotels to give us the best opportunity to get through."Haverfordwest, who finished third in the Welsh top flight last season, will start as underdogs against Floriana – but that is not a concern for Pennock."They are a seeded team and we are not, but two years ago Shkendija were a high-seeded team and we got through that," he added."The big thing going away from home first is to make sure we are still in the tie going into the second leg, which hopefully will be a good occasion that everybody enjoys."Haverfordwest's home leg is to be held at Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli because their Bridge Meadow home does not meet Uefa standards for European games.

Are you 'really worried about season' or is 'exciting football ahead'?

We asked you for your views following Russell Martin's first game in charge as Rangers manager in Sunday's pre-season friendly against Club what some of you said:Anderson: Slow and somewhat steady from Martin, assuming these guys are first team ready. Would like to see the striker situation sorted, hopefully the Igamane money can fix that. Just don't waste it all on Main thing I noticed; why was the gaffer not wearing a suit? Hope we're not going to move away from that tradition as always looked very Thought we played better second half than first, we really need to get more players in ahead of the Panathinaikos Rangers were poor in the first half v Brugge but it was an improved display after the break. Substitute Bajrami in particular was very good. However, there's still loads of work to be It looks like Martin has given everyone a clean slate. Bajrami, Barron and Curtis grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Propper let it slip through his fingers. That's what pre-season friendlies are style of play was very clear and surprisingly, the team pulled it off very well. Exciting football ahead. We just need a decent Best not to over-analyse pre-season friendlies but Club Brugge are a very useful team with a solid European pedigree and they are a worthy opponent for Martin to start looking at players within the Rangers squadIt's so good to see Curtis getting a full game and a goal. I hope that is the last game we see Propper in a Rangers shirt as he symbolises everything that was wrong with the team last season - lack of commitment, weak mentality and no physical I'm really worried about this season. The signings have been so underwhelming. We Rangers fans appreciate the millions being spent but it looks like second and third hand sloppy players from English leagues. It's not the way Martin has a massive job to get rid of the deadwood who passed up their opportunity. We still look miles away from having a competitive squad. The first half was the all too familiar hard watch but a much improved second half avoided a damaging have got to get a lot better very quickly before we play Panathinaikos. Some clarification around Dessers and Igamane wouldn't hurt either.

How Watford might look under Paulo Pezzolano

I was at the Watford training ground last week and was fortunate to get some time with one of the coaching staff, Camilo Speranza. Head coach Paulo Pezzolano is still learning English so to get a flavour of what Hornets fans can expect from him this season I spoke to Speranza about philosophy, tactics, shape and worked with Pezzolano at his previous club Real Valladolid in Spain and is now one of the key analysis coaches at Watford. Before Valladolid, Speranza was at Barcelona. He knows his stuff.I admit to being a coaching/tactics geek so was absolutely fascinated by this spoke of wanting to dominate the ball, play aggressively, at speed, but keeping things favours a 4-3-3 system but Speranza says that can change game to game and spoke about breaking the enigma code - unlocking the tactical gameplan of the opposition. Most Championship teams play a high press and then fall into a low double will try to counter that and work out a way to find space for their three attackers. That might be playing out from the back or playing longer. There is no set way. Finding space in this area then being dynamic. Quick pace, aggressive, vertical. He also spoke about improving individual players technically. Finessing minute details. Body shape, receiving in possession, weight of pass - things that you would expect Championship professionals to know but which can still be refined. Despite having a whole pre-season, there is never enough time - it is still difficult to get all their coaching points across. Training is about making shape, combination play and moves understandable so the players know why they are doing things. On the training ground the mantra is play simple, don't is big on culture and mindset. He will work closely with the academy and knows it isn't just about the starting 11 or the squad of always it comes down to winning football matches, and Watford head coaches know that better than most.
