Unakoti: The ancient 'Shaiba' wonder of Tripura awaits global spotlight

India Gazette29-05-2025

Agartala (Tripura) [India] May 29 (ANI): Nestled amidst the lush forests of North Tripura, the ancient site of Unakoti continues to astound visitors with its breathtaking rock-cut carvings and mythological mystique. This heritage treasure, located just 8 km from Kailashahar and 178 km from the state capital Agartala, is fast gaining recognition as a major cultural and spiritual destination in Northeast India.
Believed to date back to the 7th to 9th centuries, Unakoti is a significant Shaivite pilgrimage site, named after the legend of 'one less than a crore' - a crore being 10 million. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva, on his journey to Kashi with a crore gods and goddesses, rested here overnight. Upon sunrise, when none but Shiva himself awoke, he cursed the others to become stone images -- thus forming the awe-inspiring carvings scattered across the forested hill slopes.
The site is a living gallery of primitive artistry, featuring both rock-carved figures and freestanding stone sculptures. The giant faces of Shiva, majestic animal motifs, and intricate floral designs grace the vertical rock faces, harmoniously blending into the dense green surroundings. The area's natural waterfalls and serene environment only add to the spiritual aura of this open-air museum.
Unakoti, with its blend of history, mythology, and natural beauty, is being promoted as a cultural tourism hotspot. Tourists can stay at accommodations like the Unakoti Tourist Lodge (Kailashahar), Juri Tourist Lodge, and Uttarmegh Tourist Lodge (Dharmanagar)
As calls grow for UNESCO World Heritage status for Unakoti, experts urge greater awareness and preservation efforts to protect this unique site. For now, it remains one of India's best-kept secrets, waiting to be rediscovered by the world.
For generations, the priestly family of Annya Debbarma has been performing worship rituals. According to Debbarma, the worship tradition dates back to the Satya Yuga, continuing through the Dvapara Yuga and into the present Kali Yuga.
While speaking to ANI, Priest Annya Debbarma said, 'We have been performing this worship here for four generations. This ritual has been continuing since the Satya Yuga, through the Dvapara Yuga and into the Kali Yuga. Lord Krishna himself said that all the gods and goddesses have made this place their abode. So we wondered, how could we ever leave this sacred place? At that time, Narada Muni said that in order to sanctify the area, one crore (ten million) idols of deities must be made in a single night. Idols were indeed created here, but the number was slightly less than one crore--hence the name Unakoti, meaning 'one less than a crore.'
Debbarma further added, 'Lord Shiva is worshipped here. Worship takes place twice a year--once on January 14th, and again on the eighth day of the Basanti Puja during the month of Chaitra. It is believed that wishes made here are fulfilled.'
Speaking to ANI, Anuradha Tandon, a tourist from Lucknow, expressed her joy upon visiting Unakoti, saying, 'We have come from Lucknow. We learned about Unakoti and that it is a temple dedicated to Lord Mahadev. I have come to know about this place, and we have traveled a long distance to get here. After arriving and seeing it for ourselves, we felt very happy. The place is truly beautiful.' (ANI)

Tourism Terror And Tensions Discussing Kashmir After Operation Sindoor

On 22 April, militants struck Baisaran meadow, a scenic tourist spot in Kashmir, separating Hindu and Sikh visitors from Muslim locals before opening fire. The attack killed several men while sparing women and children, a grim reminder of how civilians remain trapped in cycles of violence. For Kashmir's residents, the aftermath was twofold: grief for lives lost, and dread over the collapse of their fragile economy. The region had welcomed many tourists the previous year, offering hope for stable livelihoods. Now, deserted streets and cancelled bookings threaten shopkeepers, guides, and hotel workers already struggling after years of conflict. In the days that followed, cross-border shelling between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) shattered the ceasefire, displacing families in Poonch and other border districts. Homes were damaged, and schools closed. For many Kashmiris, survival now hinges on navigating checkpoints, shortages, and the constant hum of drones overhead a daily reality overshadowed by geopolitical headlines. The question is no longer just about India or Pakistan's next move, but how Kashmiri civilians will endure yet another surge of violence?

"I have been blessed by PM Modi": Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat passenger

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 7 (ANI): Shikha Rastogi, a passenger aboard the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, expressed her joy and gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, recalling her past interactions with the Prime Minister and praising the transformative infrastructure developments in India. Speaking to ANI on the train, Rastogi said, 'I have been blessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ma'am. I have been allotted a shop in the Kashi Vishwanath corridor. I am happy to be able to travel in this train and I have come to Kashmir especially to travel in this train.' She added that witnessing the inauguration ceremony live was an emotional moment for her. 'I witnessed the inaugural ceremony live yesterday, and it felt surreal. PM Modi has done so much work for the country and even this train is for the country's people. Travel to and from Kashmir has become easy. The experience of travelling on the world's highest bridge was amazing,' she told ANI. Recalling her past meetings with the Prime Minister, Rastogi said, 'I have met PM Modi 2-3 times. This picture is from the time when the Kashi Vishwanath corridor was being inaugurated. He touched my feet and said that the government is with me and motivated me to aim higher.' Visuals from inside Kashmir's first Vande Bharat Express showed scenic views as the train crossed the Anji Khad Bridge, which Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated on Thursday. The train's launch marked a major milestone in improving connectivity to the Union Territory, offering passengers faster and more comfortable travel between Katra and Srinagar. Earlier on Saturday, the inaugural ride of the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Katra drew praise from passengers, many of whom described the new service as offering 'unmatched convenience,' making travel 'much easier, possible, and comfortable,' while hailing it as a 'great move by the government' to connect Kashmir with the rest of India. Tourists and locals hailed the launch as a historic moment, saying it would cut down travel time, boost tourism, and make Kashmir more accessible. Speaking to ANI, Ashok Kumar Khajanchi, a tourist from Bikaner in Rajasthan, shared his experience, 'We came from Bikaner to Mumbai and then to Srinagar. We've visited places like Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Many had tried to scare us into cancelling our trip, but we were determined. When we heard Vande Bharat was running, we cancelled our taxi to Jammu Tawi, even though we lost Rs 6,000. We booked Vande Bharat tickets at 7 PM and reached Srinagar by 8 PM. With my health problems, the train made travel much easier.' Khajanchi, who is recovering from a foot fracture, added, 'The convenience offered by Vande Bharat is unmatched. I had two fractures, so we had to cancel our earlier car and train bookings. But this train made the journey possible and comfortable.' On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, officially connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir via rail. This marks a major milestone in strengthening railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge over Chenab River. Speaking on the occasion, he said the development projects will further boost Jammu and Kashmir's growth journey. The train passes through two engineering marvels: the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world. (ANI)
