"I have been blessed by PM Modi": Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat passenger
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 7 (ANI): Shikha Rastogi, a passenger aboard the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, expressed her joy and gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, recalling her past interactions with the Prime Minister and praising the transformative infrastructure developments in India.
Speaking to ANI on the train, Rastogi said, 'I have been blessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ma'am. I have been allotted a shop in the Kashi Vishwanath corridor. I am happy to be able to travel in this train and I have come to Kashmir especially to travel in this train.'
She added that witnessing the inauguration ceremony live was an emotional moment for her. 'I witnessed the inaugural ceremony live yesterday, and it felt surreal. PM Modi has done so much work for the country and even this train is for the country's people. Travel to and from Kashmir has become easy. The experience of travelling on the world's highest bridge was amazing,' she told ANI.
Recalling her past meetings with the Prime Minister, Rastogi said, 'I have met PM Modi 2-3 times. This picture is from the time when the Kashi Vishwanath corridor was being inaugurated. He touched my feet and said that the government is with me and motivated me to aim higher.'
Visuals from inside Kashmir's first Vande Bharat Express showed scenic views as the train crossed the Anji Khad Bridge, which Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated on Thursday. The train's launch marked a major milestone in improving connectivity to the Union Territory, offering passengers faster and more comfortable travel between Katra and Srinagar.
Earlier on Saturday, the inaugural ride of the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Katra drew praise from passengers, many of whom described the new service as offering 'unmatched convenience,' making travel 'much easier, possible, and comfortable,' while hailing it as a 'great move by the government' to connect Kashmir with the rest of India.
Tourists and locals hailed the launch as a historic moment, saying it would cut down travel time, boost tourism, and make Kashmir more accessible.
Speaking to ANI, Ashok Kumar Khajanchi, a tourist from Bikaner in Rajasthan, shared his experience, 'We came from Bikaner to Mumbai and then to Srinagar. We've visited places like Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Many had tried to scare us into cancelling our trip, but we were determined. When we heard Vande Bharat was running, we cancelled our taxi to Jammu Tawi, even though we lost Rs 6,000. We booked Vande Bharat tickets at 7 PM and reached Srinagar by 8 PM. With my health problems, the train made travel much easier.'
Khajanchi, who is recovering from a foot fracture, added, 'The convenience offered by Vande Bharat is unmatched. I had two fractures, so we had to cancel our earlier car and train bookings. But this train made the journey possible and comfortable.'
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, officially connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir via rail. This marks a major milestone in strengthening railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge over Chenab River. Speaking on the occasion, he said the development projects will further boost Jammu and Kashmir's growth journey.
The train passes through two engineering marvels: the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world. (ANI)

Puducherry AIADMK's Anbazhagan criticises govt for unfulfilled welfare promises
PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry AIADMK State Secretary A Anbazhagan has lashed out at the territorial government led by Chief Minister N Rangasamy, accusing it of resorting to populist measures without the financial wherewithal to implement them. He alleged that the administration was attempting to woo voters ahead of the elections while leaving deep-rooted administrative inefficiencies unaddressed. Speaking to reporters, Anbazhagan said several welfare measures announced during the recent budget session — targeting the poor, middle class, and student community — had yet to take off. 'The government has not even begun distributing application forms for some of these schemes,' he claimed. Among the major announcements were the proposed enhancement of monthly assistance from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 for nearly 70,000 below-poverty-line families, which would entail an annual outlay of Rs 126 crore. Another key promise was Rs 1,000 monthly support to approximately one lakh women not currently covered under existing welfare schemes, requiring Rs 120 crore annually. However, Anbazhagan contended that none of these proposals had moved beyond the announcement stage. He also flagged the government's promise to increase old age pension assistance by Rs 500 for 1.81 lakh beneficiaries — including widows, the elderly, and the destitute — which would cost the exchequer Rs 108.6 crore per year. Enhancements in educational support for children of fishermen and the differently-abled, as well as increased assistance for marriages and funerals, would altogether push annual expenditure up by nearly Rs 400 crore, he said, adding that no corresponding budgetary allocation had been made.

Schemes to develop biotech, urban infra
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Cabinet on Friday decided to implement two new schemes for the development of biotechnology and to enhance urban infrastructure. The Cabinet also gave its nod to a proposal to float a tender for Chheligada multipurpose medium irrigation project in Gajapati district. These proposals were approved at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. 'The two new schemes, named 'Development of Biotechnology' and 'Mukhya Mantri Sahari Bikash Yojana (MSBY)', aimed at creating employment and strengthening the State's economy,' Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja told reporters after the meeting. On the 'Development of Biotechnology' scheme, he said it would be implemented in five years, starting from the financial year 2025-26, with an estimated cost of RS 1,113.50 crore. 'The scheme will foster collaboration between industry, academia and research to benefit society and open vast opportunities for biotechnology applications across various sectors, including industry, agriculture, medicine and the environment,' the Chief Secretary said. With the Odisha Biotechnology Policy 2024 in place, the scheme will provide incentives to develop advanced infrastructure for products and services, he said, adding that this will help Odisha become a knowledge-driven bio-economy and contribute significantly to the State's overall economic growth. It will promote higher education, research and infrastructure development in the areas of biotechnology and strengthen a supportive and vibrant ecosystem. On the 'Mukhyamantri Sahari Bikash Yojana, Ahuja said it will 'enhance urban infrastructure and improve revenue models with an integrated approach to city development in line with 'Viksit Odisha @ 2036 vision'. The scheme, with an outlay of Rs 6,000 crore, will be implemented over five years. It is expected to boost urban infrastructure, create large-scale employment and enhance the quality of life for residents. Under the scheme, plans are there to build town halls, crematoriums, community centres, market complexes, roads, drains, vending zones, parks, parking spaces, EV charging stations and mini cold storage units. These facilities will be complemented by the development of micro-tourism projects and neighbourhood marketplaces to energise local economies, the official said. The Cabinet also approved a tender worth over Rs 151 crore for the execution of Chheligada multipurpose medium irrigation project in R Udaygiri block of Gajapati district. The project envisages the construction of a storage reservoir across river Badajore, a tributary of the Vansadhara river, the Chief Secretary said. It will irrigate about 6,260 hectares of land. Besides, the project will provide water supply of 31.54 million cubic metres for drinking and domestic requirements for the people of Berhampur and will also help in fishery development, livestock farming and replenishing the groundwater level. The project will also help generate 36 MW of hydroelectricity along with improving the socio-economic condition of the locality, the Chief Secretary said.
