India's top LNG importer Petronet seeks $1.4 bn local loan

Time of India23-07-2025
India's largest importer of natural gas
Petronet LNG Ltd.
is seeking a loan of at least 120 billion rupees ($1.4 billion) for a new
petrochemical plant
and an
LNG terminal
, according to people familiar with the matter.
Local lenders including
Axis Bank
,
State Bank of India
and
Union Bank of India
are considering to join the facility, which is among the company's largest fundraising exercises, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. The borrower is seeking bids from banks in groups or individually, they said, adding that SBI Capital Markets has been appointed as adviser for the deal.
The facility for triple-A rated Petronet comes at a period of muted activity for India's loans space, where bank lending grew 9.5% as of June 27, the lowest growth rate since March 2022, according to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India. If the financing goes through, it would be one of the biggest local currency loans for the country this year, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.
Spokespeople for
Axis Bank
, Petronet, SBI, SBI Capital Markets and Union Bank of India didn't immediately reply to emails from Bloomberg News seeking comment.
Proceeds from the loan will partially fund the construction of a new petrochemical complex in Dahej, located in the southwest coast of Gujarat in India, the people said, adding that it will help diversify the company's earnings beyond the
LNG
space. The project is estimated to cost 206.85 billion rupees, according to the company's website.
The New Delhi-based firm is also setting up a separate five million tons land-based LNG import terminal at Gopalpur, located on the east coast in Odisha.
The latest loan could carry a tenor of more than 10 years, the people said. The pricing could be lower than SBI's one-month marginal cost of funds based lending rate of 7.95% currently, a benchmark gauge of local currency borrowings, two of the people said.

Federal Bank net income falls 14.7% amid rising credit costs from MFI, agri books

MUMBAI: The Kochi-based old generation private sector lender Federal Bank has reported a 14.7% on-year dip in its net income at Rs 861.75 crore in the June quarter, down from Rs 1,010 crore a year ago, driven by rising credit costs in the microfinance and agri books. Sequentially, the numbers are worse with a drop of 16.31%. The key net interest income rose 1.96% to Rs 2,336.83 crore, while other income jumped to Rs 1,113 crore, up 21.6%, taking the total income up 7.64% to Rs 7,799.61 crore, the management led by chief executive KVS Manian told reporters in an earnings call Saturday. The asset quality was impacted by a 39 bps rise in credit costs to 65 bps from 26 bps in the year-ago period, largely driven by slippages in the agri and MFI portfolios. This has the total slippages rising by 1.1% in the quarter. "Based on current trends, we expect these slippages to moderate and stabilise going forward, leading to a normalisation in credit costs," Manian said. The bank added Rs 686 crore in fresh slippages, mostly from the microfinance and agri books. The total business of the bank grew 8.5% to reach Rs 5,28,640.65 crore, making it the sixth largest private sector lender. The total deposits were Rs 2,87,436.31 crore (of this the low-cost Casa base expanded 12% to Rs 87,236 crore), which grew 8.03%, and advances were Rs 2,41,204.34, which grew 9.24% during the quarter.

Indian-origin woman advocates working ‘14+ hours a day… It's baseline'; internet reacts

An Indian-origin woman and founder of a US-based startup has stirred a heated discussion online after claiming that working 80 hours a week is not excessive but simply the 'baseline'. Neha Suresh, the founder of April – a US-based AI voice assistant app – posted a timelapse video on X (formerly Twitter), showing her working from early morning until late at night. In her now-viral post, Suresh wrote: 'If you're not spending 14+ hours a day working on your dream, you're ngmi.' She added, 'You can't build a world-changing product on 9–5 energy. 80-hour weeks aren't extreme. It's baseline.' Her comments, which have racked up over 65,000 views, sparked a range of responses from users — from admiration to criticism. One person asked, 'What do you do to decompress after an 80-hour week? Physically. What actually works?' Another replied with sarcasm, 'Why just 14 hours? Make it 24.' Some shared personal experiences. 'I burned out chasing 80-hour weeks. Found I actually build better products when I'm rested and thinking clearly,' a user wrote. Another commented, 'Wow, another person who's never had to pay bills or have a social life telling me how to live my best life.' The post has since fuelled a wider conversation about work-life balance and the pressure of hustle culture in startups and tech. Joining the ongoing conversation about work-life balance, India-origin tech leader Dharmesh Shah had offered a frank take on the reality of building a successful startup. Shah, who is the founder and Chief Technology Officer of HubSpot, shared his thoughts in a post on X (formerly Twitter) in March, where he spoke openly about the challenges of managing both work and personal life in the startup world. He acknowledged that maintaining balance is difficult, especially when aiming for high levels of success. "Wanting work-life balance is OK. Wanting to build a breakthrough startup is OK. But you shouldn't expect both," he wrote. 'In 30+ years and knowing hundreds of founders, I've never met a single founder that built a breakthrough startup while maintaining work-life balance. Any competitive human endeavor requires sacrifice to stand-out. Whether it's athletics, arts or entrepreneurship. Raw talent is not enough. You have to toil,' Shah wrote. 'Unhappiness comes from expecting more out of the system than you put in. Either path is totally OK, as long as you understand that you picked a path. Two roads diverged in a wood, and if you take the one most traveled by, don't think that won't make a difference,' Shah said.
