No. 12 Illinois and star QB Luke Altmyer are ready to enter uncharted territory

Associated Press4 hours ago
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — The ingredients are there for No. 12 Illinois to emerge from years of mediocrity and make a run into the 12-team College Football Playoff.
The Illini flew under the radar on their way to a 10-win season last year — their first since 2001 — and they return 18 starters including star quarterback Luke Altmyer.
The Illini haven't had two straight winning seasons since they were 7-6 in 2010 and 2011. They haven't been ranked in the AP preseason poll since 2008, when they were No. 20.
How they handle high expectations for the first time in years could determine their success in 2025.
Coach Bret Bielema, starting his fifth season with the Illini with a new six-year contract, and his players say they welcome the challenge.
'I love the resilience of our team,' Bielema said. 'These guys are better when they've been punched in the face. That doesn't mean I need to punch them. You know what I mean.'
Altmyer said the team isn't afraid of entering new waters.
'We're tough and resilient,' he said.
Linebacker Malachi Hood said the Illini were happy, but not satisfied after last season.
'Ten wins was great, but why settle for 10 when you can get 11 or 12?' he said. 'The postseason is right there on the table for us.'
Defensive back Miles Scott believes a saying he's heard often during preseason workouts describes the team's outlook.
'The saying is, 'Success is like cologne,' he said. 'You can smell it, but don't drink it because it could kill you.' We need to keep our focus narrow, not look at outside things.'
Altmyer's passing targets
Altmyer was one of the nation's most efficient passers last season with 22 TD passes and just six interceptions.
Who will be his main targets through the air with the departures of Pat Bryant, now with the Denver Broncos, and Zakhari Franklin?
The leading candidates are West Virginia transfer Hudson Clement and Hank Beatty.
Clement had 51 catches for 741 yards last year for the Mountaineers. Beatty caught 20 passes and 294 yards while also ranking fourth in the nation in punt returns with an average of 14.1 yards.
A balanced attack
Illinois is counting on the running back tandem of Kaden Feagin and Aidan Laughery to establish a ground game that complements Altmyer's passing attack.
Feagin played in just five games last year before being injured. He was averaging nearly 70 yards a game rushing at the time. Laughery led the Illini with 6.1 yards per carry last season.
Last line of defense
Defensive back Xavier Scott and strong safety Matthew Bailey anchor a solid Illini secondary.
Scott had four interceptions and six pass breakups in addition to 49 tackles and one forced fumble last year.
Bailey returned with a vengeance last fall after missing the 2023 season with a shoulder injury, making 94 tackles and forcing three fumbles.
Snap to it
Illinois has a solid kicking game, anchored by the reliable long snapper Lane Hansen, who has started 35 consecutive games.
During that time, the Illini have converted 86 of 90 PATs, 49 of 59 field goals and had just one punt blocked in 97 attempts.
Punter Keelan Crimmins, a Purdue transfer, averaged 44.9 yards on 64 punts last season for the Boilermakers including 17 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Placekicker David Olano was 17 of 20 on field goals in 2024, including making 16 of 18 from inside the 50.
The schedule
The Illini will open the season Aug. 29 at home against Western Illinois and play just two games against preseason ranked teams: No. 20 Indiana on the road Sept. 20 and No. 3 Ohio State at home Oct. 11. Three other tough matchups are USC at home Sept. 27, Washington on the road Oct. 25 and Wisconsin on the road Nov. 22.

2025 ACC betting preview, odds: Predictions for tricky conference ahead of college football Week 0

Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. The outlook for the ACC feels clearer than any of the other Power 4 conferences in 2025. The best team in the conference is obvious. The biggest story in the conference is obvious. You'd think that handicapping this conference would be rather straightforward, but the truth is that nothing is simple in the new era of college football. Yes, Clemson is deserving of its status as the runaway favorite in the ACC, but that doesn't mean that it's a foregone conclusion. At this time last year, Florida State was the favorite to top the conference and was a trendy pick to win the whole shabang. The Seminoles went 2-10 and finished last in the conference at 1-7. Clemson would eventually win the ACC, but the Tigers started the season with a 34-3 loss to Georgia; there weren't many folks backing them to be the last team standing after that performance. So while it may be tempting to plunk a chunk down on Clemson, it behooves you to take a hard look at some other teams. There will always be some lofty prices out there when there's such a firm favorite at the top of a volatile market. 2025 ACC Odds Team Odds Clemson +110 Miami +400 Louisville +750 SMU 10/1 Georgia Tech 14/1 Duke 25/1 Florida State 28/1 North Carolina 28/1 NC State 40/1 Pittsburgh 40/1 Virginia Tech 40/1 Syracuse 65/1 Boston College 75/1 Virginia 75/1 California 125/1 Wake Forest 400/1 Stanford 500/1 Odds via bet365 The Favorites Dabo Swinney has been unapologetic about how he's running the show at Clemson. Rather than raid the transfer portal each offseason, Swinney has remained steadfast in his belief that development and continuity are the best paths to success. His philosophy drew plenty of critics, but last year those skeptics began to quiet down as Clemson won the ACC Championship game and made it to the College Football Playoff. One year later, nobody is poking fun at Swinney or the Tigers. Clemson leads the country in returning production, and senior quarterback Cade Klubnik is one of the favorites to win the Heisman. 3 Cade Klubnik of the Clemson Tigers. AP Not only is Clemson the clear favorite to win the ACC, but the Tigers are also -200 to make the Playoff, trailing only Georgia, Ohio State, Texas and Penn State for the shortest odds to qualify for the dance. On paper, there's very little not to like about Clemson going into the new season, but the one concern I have is that the schedule is tougher than it may seem. Putting aside their Week 1 brouhaha with LSU and their traditional curtain-closer with South Carolina, the Tigers have tough ACC road tilts with Georgia Tech and Louisville, plus a visit to UNC to take on Bill Belichick. Clemson avoids Miami, but a three-game homestand against SMU, Duke and Florida State could be trickier than the odds will imply. You have to look pretty deep to find the landmines for this team, which is why they're such a clear favorite, but the number is just too short to be worth a bet given how volatile the ACC proved to be last year. Betting on College Football? You may think that if you're passing on Clemson, you should bet on Miami, but the truth is that I'd rather trust Swinney and the Tigers at a shorter price than Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes. Miami is the only team in the ACC with the talent to stand up to Clemson on paper, but Cristobal has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory so many times in his career that it's impossible to trust him. The Canes were 9-0 to start last year and looked like a shoo-in for the Playoff before losing to Georgia Tech and Syracuse at home in ugly, uninspired performances. Cristobal has to earn a lot more trust, especially now that he doesn't have Cam Ward to win him games on his own. 3 NC State's Dave Doeren is the second-most tenured coach in the ACC. AP Dark Horses SMU, Louisville and Georgia Tech are the projected gatecrashers, but none of them stand out as solid betting options in this market. Louisville's roster underwent a ton of change in the offseason, and the Cardinals have a tough conference schedule. SMU has a Heisman sleeper, Kevin Jennings, under center, but they lost a lot of playmakers from 2024 and too have a brutal schedule. Georgia Tech's resurgence is a wonderful story, and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner could be the best in the country, but the narrative surrounding the Ramblin' Wreck has seeped into the market and taken all the value out of the Yellow Jackets. In fact, there isn't much of a difference between Georgia Tech and a couple of teams being offered at triple and quadruple the price. Long shots One of those teams, NC State, is coming into the season without any real fanfare after being a trendy pick to win the ACC in 2024. Last year, it was supposed to be the defense that drove the bus for the Wolfpack, but that unit was underwhelming, dooming NC State to a mediocre season. An improvement from the defense, and a step forward from exciting sophomore quarterback CJ Bailey, and NC State could outrun their odds against a very manageable schedule. The Wolfpack have a tricky stretch run against Georgia Tech, Miami, Florida State and UNC, but the first handful of ACC games are winnable and could put them in a terrific position to make a charge to the title game. NC State is a very tempting bet at 40/1 odds. The same can't be said of UNC. 3 Bill Belichick returns to coaching in Chapel Hill. AP While there is certainly a chance that Bill Belichick's genius translates to the college ranks, there are just too many unknowns for the Tar Heels to be worth a sprinkle at a similar or shorter price than Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech and/or Florida State. The one bet that could be a fun way to get involved with UNC is backing quarterback Gio Lopez to throw for the most passing yards in the conference. Lopez tossed for 2,559 yards at South Alabama last year and Belichick does have a reputation for getting the most out of his quarterbacks. I could also be talked into buying low on Florida State after a moribund 2024 campaign, but you can probably wait until after Week 1 against Alabama and get an even bigger number, assuming the Seminoles fall short. Best bets in the ACC NC State to win the ACC (50/1, BetMGM) Gio Lopez most passing yards in ACC (33/1, bet365) Why Trust New York Post Betting Michael Leboff is a long-suffering Islanders fan, but a long-profiting sports bettor with 10 years of experience in the gambling industry. He loves using game theory to help punters win bracket pools, find long shots, and learn how to beat the market in mainstream and niche sports.

PSG Partners With Rematch To Drive Unique User-Generated U.S. Content

Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) U.S. academies are partnering with community-driven sports highlight platform Rematch to allow their communities to capture and share unique content from games across the country. The partnership will integrate Rematch into the PSG Academy ecosystem and allow for social media collaborations. As part of the agreement, 'Rematch will organize and share the best highlights from across the [PSG] academies for each individual use on a weekly basis. In turn, the PSG Academy brand will be embedded on all captured and shared content from academy competitions and training.' The agreement begins this fall and will include six of PSG academies: Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, and Phoenix. There was even strong interest from PSG's academy in British Columbia, but the Rematch app is not yet operational in Canada, so that agreement will not be finalized until 2026. Rematch U.S. CEO Hanna Howard says this partnership will 'unlock access to content that most academies and clubs don't have.' The highlights will be user-generated, from the sidelines, without the need for a videographer. What is Rematch? Rematch is a French company founded in 2019. It allows sports fans to effortlessly capture highlights and provides 'a dedicated social platform where highlights can be viewed and shared-so every player, every game, every highlight can be seen and celebrated.' FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Unlike traditional videography, which requires a camera, a full match recording, and then hours of video editing to deliver a highlights package, Rematch's software allows fans to live the memorable moment in real-time and then go back and capture it on camera. Using a specialized AI-powered rewind software, fans using the Rematch app just need to hit record after the goal, basket, or try is scored, and the app will automatically capture the preceding fifteen to twenty seconds of action, giving the user a high-quality, ready-made highlight clip. The app was popularized in the French grassroots sports market before launching in the U.S. Since 2019, Rematch has partnered with the French Federations for basketball, soccer, handball, rugby, and others, and has had over 700 million highlights views. Rematch launched in January 2025 in the U.S. In its first six months, Rematch videos have had roughly 10.5 million views across social media platforms, and the app is expected to eclipse more than 10,000 users by the end of August. With more than 2,000 total games filmed and 22,000 highlights captured, the app is democratizing sports visibility, allowing the best moments across all youth sports to be watched. In the company's own words, 'Rematch is a movement to celebrate participation, connect communities, and open new opportunities for sponsors and organizations to engage a passionate sports audience.' PSG Partnership and the Future of Rematch Rematch launched in the U.S. with a focus on youth soccer before successfully expanding into basketball. The app is looking to add more sports, notably volleyball and American football, and even had a brief beta trial with Major League Rugby. The partnership with PSG's U.S. academies was the product of mutual connections. Rematch pitched its offering to the Parisian powerhouse back in April. As Howard recalls, 'they really took a liking to it.' It helped that there was also a French connection. For what Howard describes as 'a significant discount,' the six PSG academies will receive access to user-generated content that can enhance the club's brand visibility in the U.S. The app has no cost, which means parents and casual fans can easily download it. Recording is so simple that any fan with a smartphone can do it. From there, Rematch will review all the captured content, tailor highlight videos, and upload them to social media with club branding. Howard also says there will be opportunities for brand collaborations. Rematch will provide the academies (and any partner entity) with performance metrics of different posts, monthly reports on involvement, and will even spotlight parents who post the most high-performing content as a way of providing inter-academy gamification. Rematch remains hyper-focused on celebrating highlights regardless of sporting level or competition. The company is developing a premium version of the app, which will cost users $4.99 a month and will allow fans to capture videos in 4k or 1080p and will provide filters that remove camera shake, distracting audio, and customized video length — at the moment, soccer highlights default to 15 seconds. The low monthly fee is part of Rematch's efforts to remain appealing to the widest possible user base. As Howard says, 'We are really determined to maintain accessibility for parents.' The partnership with PSG is just the beginning. Rematch is open to the possibility of partnering with professional leagues and clubs, just as it did with MLR. In the age of content creation, this is a chance for all fans to actively celebrate their sports.

Orioles' Félix Bautista faces another long recovery after surgery to repair rotator cuff and labrum

BALTIMORE (AP) — Orioles closer Félix Bautista has had another major operation, this time to repair a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum. The team says Bautista had surgery Tuesday with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. The development comes just over a week after interim manager Tony Mansolino announced the 6-foot-8 right-hander would miss the rest of the season because of a 'significant' shoulder injury. Bautista is likely to miss most of next season too, part of a string of health issues that have limited him since he made the All-Star team in 2023. Bautista was one of the most imposing relievers in baseball that year, posting 33 saves and a 1.48 ERA. But he missed the last month of that season, plus the playoffs, because of a right UCL injury. After Tommy John surgery, he was out for all of 2024. Bautista was able to make it back this year, going 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 19 saves, but after 34 2/3 innings, he'll miss significant time again. The Orioles were off Wednesday. They begin a four-game home series Thursday night against Houston. Baltimore remains in last place in the AL East but has won six of its last seven, all against postseason contenders. ___ AP MLB:
