Lacrosse-Bangladesh signs up as global surge powers Olympic return

-The lacrosse world map expanded further east this week as Bangladesh became the 94th country to join the sport's global governing body, continuing a remarkable growth trajectory for a game set to make its Olympic return after a 120-year absence.
Lacrosse will feature in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, marking its return as a medal sport for the first time since 1908.
Bangladesh became the 21st member of the Asia-Pacific Lacrosse Union (APLU), which celebrates its 21st anniversary this year, and joins neighbours Pakistan and India in forming a growing South Asian presence in the sport, World Lacrosse said on Wednesday.
"We're grateful for the effort of those in Bangladesh to foster a playing community, and look forward to new and exciting possibilities for competition in this region," said World Lacrosse Director of Sport TJ Buchanan.
The addition marks the second new member country for World Lacrosse in 2025, following the inclusion of Armenia in February. The global governing body has enjoyed a rapid recent expansion with 21 new nations joining since the start of 2022.
The APLU has been developing membership across various regions of Asia, with particular focus on creating competition opportunities for newer members in South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, a development whichwill be showcased at the second Asian Lacrosse Games, scheduled for September in Saudi Arabia.
The region is also becoming a championship hub, with the APLU set to host the next three World Lacrosse Championships – beginning with the men's U20 event on Korea's Jeju Island in August, followed by the men's and women's championships in Japan in 2026 and 2027.

The 45-year-old described Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for doping, as a "great strength and inspiration" after receiving his support since ending his career. "Lance has been very, very good to me. That's not something everyone wants to hear because people only like to hear the bad stuff," Wiggins said in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live on Friday. "It's on a human level. You can only take someone how they treat you. "Lance has been a source of inspiration to me and a constant source of help towards me and is one of the main factors why I'm in this position I am today mentally and physically, so, I'm indebted to him for that." Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France in 2012 and collected a then-British record eight Olympic medals, including gold in the time trial at the 2012 London Games. He is now collaborating on Armstrong's podcast The Move, where they will be covering this summer's Tour de France, and said their relationship has been grounded in mutual understanding beyond cycling. England are top of Group K after two games with a perfect record while Andorra are bottom with two losses ahead of Saturday's game in Barcelona. Tuchel said England are fully committed to the qualifier where he wants "a win that is never in danger" but also said fans should not "over-expect" them to go all guns blazing right from the start of the game. "It will be on us to get going, it is on us to keep the tempo high, to bring the attacking energy to the pitch and to do this in a relentless way," Tuchel told reporters. "I can fully understand that this is not the easiest time of the season for an international break. The players come from a long and tiring season and then again accepting the role to be responsible for the majority of the game can be demanding. "But at the same time, what I feel from the group is that they are happy to be here. We are quite new together, it is our second camp and I have trust and belief that we will do what is necessary to get the result that we want." Tuchel said England have embraced the tag as huge favourites, promising an attacking lineup that will dominate possession while he is not looking to experiment by using this match as an audition for new players. "The focus will be on the attacking patterns, on our hunger for and the reaction after ball losses, for the counter-pressing," he added. Tuchel has also done his homework on Andorra, describing the European minnows as a well-drilled and well-organised side in a 5-4-1 formation. "They don't allow a huge amount of big chances," the German coach said. "So we need a mix between being patient and at the same time speed the game up, bring the speed to the game and try to never lose the focus."
