Seven high school sports takeaways from an action-packed Sunday featuring the Meet of Champions and more
The lowest seed remaining? No. 21 Bishop Fenwick girls' tennis, which will face top-seeded Dover-Sherborn in the Division 3 semifinal Tuesday at Newton North.
The highest seed eliminated? It's a four-way tie. Three No. 1 seeds have been knocked out in the baseball brackets (D1's Taunton, D3's St. Mary's, and D5's Turners Falls), but only one other No. 1 seed has fallen across all sports and divisions: Boston Latin girls' tennis, which was knocked out of the Division 1 tourney by eighth-seeded Winchester.

Girls' lacrosse: No. 6 Westford in D1.
Softball: No. 10 Greater New Bedford in D3.
Baseball: No. 14 Chelmsford in D1.
Why didn't you include boys' volleyball or rugby? Because both volleyball divisions and all three rugby divisions (boys and girls) went to chalk, with only the top seeds still standing.
Most semifinals get started Tuesday, with a few boys' tennis semis on Monday, plus the final six quarterfinal matchups, three of which are suspended games that will be resumed.

3. Four stars
Three performances mirrored each other, but we also couldn't leave out Wayland's star hitter, so we decided to add a star.
Kiley Hogan
, Tyngsborough — The junior got the Tigers started right with a two-run homer in the first inning, then pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run while striking out nine without issuing a walk as the Tigers topped AMSA, 3-2, in the Division 4 softball quarterfinals.
Delaney Moquin
, Silver Lake — The senior tossed a 14-strikeout shutout and launched a two-run home run in the first inning to lead Silver Lake past Middleborough, 7-0, in Division 2 quarterfinals
Alyx Rossi
, Bedford — The Boston College-bound senior struck out 18 in a three-hit shutout and blasting the first pitch she saw for a two-run homer (for the second-straight game) in the Buccaneers' 6-0 Division 2 quarterfinal win over Tewksbury. Rossi has struck out 51 in 21 playoff innings without surrendering a run.

Finn Bell
, Wayland — The junior slammed down 32 kills, adding 12 digs and four aces, as he surpassed 1,000 career kills in the Warriors' 3-1 Division 2 quarterfinal win over Marlborough. 'He's missed five games in every season so far, and still hit 1,000 kills in his junior year, which is pretty unbelievable,' said coach Phil George.

Auburn Tigers named a finalist for 2026 four-star WR Marquez Daniels
Auburn Tigers named a finalist for 2026 four-star WR Marquez Daniels Daniels, a wide receiver from nearby Tuskegee, placed Auburn in his top schools after a recent visit to the Plains. The Auburn Tigers are looking to bolster their wide receiver room for the 2026 season. Caleb Jones of Auburn Rivals reported over the weekend that the Tigers were a finalist for four-star wide receiver Marquez Daniels. He was on his official visit to Auburn over the weekend. The other finalist for Daniels is the Florida Gators who he will visit on June 13. Daniels plays high school football in Tuskegee, Alabama for the Booker T. Washington Golden Eagles. Booker T. Washington went 5-4 and 4-3 in 4A Region 3 last season and barely missed the AHSAA Playoffs. For Daniels, he caught 38 passes for 757 yards and 12 touchdowns during his junior season. He has big play ability averaging 19.9 yards per reception. He also was featured in the special teams unit for the Golden Eagles. Last season, he had nine kickoff returns for 210 yards with a 23.3 average. Daniels also returned five punts for 152 yards. 247Sports has Daniels ranked as the No. 13 wide receiver and No. 10 overall in Alabama. At 6-5, 195 pounds he makes for a big target for any quarterback. Daniels also has excelled in basketball. Last season, he averaged 17 points per game and 9.6 rebounds. His rebounding ability can translate to the gridiron when competing for passes against defensive backs. Head coach Hugh Freeze has been adding a lot of wide receiver talent during his short tenure at Auburn. For Daniels, he could be a Tiger during the final year for Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, and Perry Thompson. Daniels could be a big playmaker for Auburn in 2027 if he commits to the Tigers. Atlanta's season is starting to slip away after another 7-game losing streak
Associated Press One seven-game losing streak was manageable for Atlanta — a possible fluke at the start of the season. But now the Braves have dropped seven in a row again, and it's time to wonder if this will simply be a lost season for one of the game's star-studded teams. Sunday's 4-3 defeat at San Francisco dropped Atlanta to 10 games under .500 and 9 1/2 games behind the National League's final playoff spot. The Braves haven't missed the postseason since 2017 — and it's too early to count them out this year — but they can't afford to have much more go wrong. Atlanta started the season 0-7, then spent about six weeks clawing its way back to .500. All that work has already been undone after the Braves dropped another seven straight this past week. The last five of those defeats were by one run, including a ghastly collapse at home against Arizona on Thursday in which the Diamondbacks scored seven runs in the ninth to win 11-10. After that, Atlanta called up reliever Craig Kimbrel from the minors — the franchise saves leader returned to the Braves for the first time since they traded him before the 2015 season. He pitched once, then was designated for assignment. Atlanta overcame injuries to Ronald Acuña Jr. and Spencer Strider to make the playoffs a year ago. Those two are back now, but while Acuña is hitting well, Strider has lost all five of his starts on the mound. The Braves are also one of only three teams in baseball with more blown saves (12) than saves (10). There are some reasons for Atlanta to keep hope alive. A big problem so far has been the team's 9-19 record in one-run games, which suggests the Braves don't need to improve much to turn things around. They actually have a positive run differential on the season. But the NL East may already be out of reach, with Atlanta trailing the first-place New York Mets by 14 games. Right now the Braves are in fourth, as close to last-place Miami as they are to third-place Washington. Trivia time Pete Alonso of the Mets needs 10 more homers to surpass Darryl Strawberry for the franchise's career lead. Only three active players currently hold the home run record for a major league franchise. Name the players, and the teams they hold the career lead in homers for. Line of the week Seattle's George Kirby struck out 14 and allowed just two hits in seven innings in a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. That snapped a five-game skid for the Mariners, who could use a more effective Kirby. The right-hander is 1-3 with a 6.53 ERA in four starts after missing the start of the season because of shoulder issues. Perhaps this performance was a sign that he's righting the ship. Comeback of the week This is obviously the Diamondbacks, who according to Baseball Savant faced a win probability of 0.1% after their leadoff hitter in the ninth struck out. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a solo homer, Alek Thomas added a two-run shot and Katel Marte produced an RBI single before the second out of the inning. Then Ildemaro Vargas hit an RBI single, and Eugenio Suarez's two-run double put Arizona ahead. Five other teams have come back to win after trailing by six this year, but none of those six-run deficits were later than the seventh inning. Trivia answer Mike Trout holds the Angels' record with 388 home runs. Giancarlo Stanton, now with the Yankees, is the Marlins' leader with 267. Manny Machado has the Padres' record of 177. (Evan Longoria holds the Rays' record with 261, but he hasn't played in the majors since 2023 and signed a one-day contract Saturday to retire with Tampa Bay.) ___ AP MLB: recommended

LSU baseball will see familiar foe in first game of College World Series
LSU baseball will see a familiar foe when it gets to Omaha for the College World Series. LSU's first game will be vs. SEC rival Arkansas. LSU and Arkansas both punched their tickets after completing sweeps on Sunday. Arkansas took care of business vs. Tennessee while LSU beat West Virginia. Advertisement The Tigers and Razorbacks met earlier this year in Baton Rouge, with LSU taking two of three for the series win. The Tigers won the Friday night meeting when Jared Jones scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly off the bat of Ethan Frey. LSU mercy ruled Arkansas in Game 2 before the Razorbacks got the best of LSU in Game 3. LSU and Arkansas are probably the strongest teams in the bracket, so meeting in Game 1 isn't ideal for either squad. The winner will be considered the national title favorite while the loser will have to play with its back to the wall. LSU's last trip to the College World Series came in 2023, where LSU also met an SEC foe in Game 1. The Tigers beat Tennessee to open their 2023 campaign in Omaha.
