AI-powered ‘hearing glasses' could help filter out background noise in real time

The project, led by Heriot-Watt University and involving researchers from the University of Edinburgh, Napier University and the University of Stirling, aims to help people with hearing loss by filtering out background noise in real-time, even in loud environments.
The technology combines lip-reading technology, artificial intelligence and cloud computing, and uses a small camera built into glasses to track the speaker's lip movements while a smartphone app uses 5G to send both audio and visual data to a powerful cloud server.
AI then isolates the speaker's voice from surrounding noise and sends the cleaned-up sound back to the listener's hearing aid or headphones almost instantly.
More than 1.2 million adults in the UK have hearing loss severe enough to make ordinary conversation difficult, according to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, and the impact of hearing aids can be limited in noisy places.
Researchers hope to have a working version of the glasses by 2026.
They are speaking to hearing aid manufacturers about future partnerships and hope to reduce costs to make the devices more widely available.
Scientists have collected noise samples, from washing machines to traffic, to improve the system's training.
Project leader Professor Mathini Sellathurai, of Heriot-Watt University, said: 'We're not trying to reinvent hearing aids. We're trying to give them superpowers.
'You simply point the camera or look at the person you want to hear.
'Even if two people are talking at once, the AI uses visual cues to extract the voice of the person you're looking at.'
This approach, known as audio-visual speech enhancement, takes advantage of the close link between lip movements and speech.
Some noise-cancelling technologies already exist, but struggle with overlapping voices or complex background sounds — something this system aims to overcome.
By shifting the heavy processing work to cloud servers — some as far away as Stockholm — the researchers can apply powerful deep-learning algorithms without overloading the small, wearable device.
The technology is still in the prototype stage but researchers have tested the technology with people who use hearing aids and said early results are promising.
Prof Sellathurai said: 'There's a slight delay, since the sound travels to Sweden and back, but with 5G, it's fast enough to feel instant.
'One of the most exciting parts is how general the technology could be.
'It's aimed to support people who use hearing aids and who have severe visual impairments, but it could help anyone working in noisy places, from oil rigs to hospital wards.
'There are only a few big companies that make hearing aids and they have limited support in noisy environments.
'We want to break that barrier and help more people, especially children and older adults, access affordable, AI-driven hearing support.'
The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The groundbreaking satellite marks a major milestone in the fight against climate change by providing more accurate climate data, experts say. STV News 'Climate watchdog' satellite will transform how carbon is monitored globally Designed to act as a 'climate watchdog', MicroCarb will pinpoint how much carbon dioxide is being emitted and absorbed by cities, oceans and forests in unprecedented detail. Its readings will feed into global efforts to tackle climate change and limit global warming to 1.5C. University of Edinburgh space science professor Paul Palmer told STV News: 'For us, there are still some very fundamental questions about our knowledge of the global carbon cycle particularly now with our warming world. STV News Researchers from the University of Edinburgh will translate the satellite's CO₂ data into detailed publicly accessible maps showing carbon absorption and emissions. 'We're seeing things changing very rapidly, particularly in the tropics, and also because we're going to collect data that will contribute to the Paris Agreement. Cats develop dementia in a similar way to humans

Cats develop dementia in a similar way to humans with Alzheimer's disease, leading to hopes of a breakthrough in research, according to scientists. Experts at the University of Edinburgh carried out a post-mortem brain examination on 25 cats which had symptoms of dementia in life, including confusion, sleep disruption and an increase in vocalisation. They found a build-up of amyloid-beta, a toxic protein and one of the defining features of Alzheimer's disease. The discovery has been hailed as a "perfect natural model for Alzheimer's" by scientists who believe it will help them explore new treatments for humans. Dr Robert McGeachan, study lead from the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, said: "Dementia is a devastating disease - whether it affects humans, cats, or dogs. "Our findings highlight the striking similarities between feline dementia and Alzheimer's disease in people. "This opens the door to exploring whether promising new treatments for human Alzheimer's disease could also help our ageing pets. Microscopy images of older cats which had previously shown symptoms of feline dementia revealed a build-up of amyloid-beta within the synapses - the junctions of brain cells. Synapses allow the flow of messages between brain cells, and losing these causes reduced memory and thinking abilities in humans with Alzheimer's. The team believe the discovery in cats could help them get a clearer understanding of the process, offering a valuable model for studying dementia in people. Previously, researchers have studied genetically-modified rodents, although the species does not naturally suffer from dementia. "Because cats naturally develop these brain changes, they may also offer a more accurate model of the disease than traditional laboratory animals, ultimately benefiting both species and their caregivers," Dr McGeachan said. Will this research benefit cats? The researchers found evidence that brain support cells - called astrocytes and microglia - engulfed the affected synapses. It's known as synaptic pruning, an important process during brain development but which contributes to dementia. Prof Danielle Gunn-Moore, an expert in feline medicine at the vet school, said the discovery could also help to understand and manage feline dementia. "Feline dementia is so distressing for the cat and for its person," she said. "It is by undertaking studies like this that we will understand how best to treat them. This will be wonderful for the cats, their owners, people with Alzheimer's and their loved ones." The animal rights campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the study appeared to have been conducted in a "respectful, non-invasive way" on the brain of cats that already died. However it said it would oppose any research that involved future experiments on live cats. The study, funded by Wellcome and the UK Dementia Research Institute, is published in the European Journal of Neuroscience, and included scientists from the Universities of Edinburgh and California, UK Dementia Research Institute and Scottish Brain Sciences.

The brains of cats with dementia undergo similar changes to those in people with Alzheimer's, according to a new Scottish study Research has discovered that cats affected by dementia undergo similar changes in their brain to humans with Alzheimer's disease. These parallels could mark a new way of studying the condition and potentially finding a treatment say experts at the University of Edinburgh. ‌ The discovery not only provides fresh hope for tackling Alzheimer's in humans, but also offers the potential that cutting-edge therapies developed for people might eventually also help our elderly feline companions too. Traditionally, researchers have depended on genetically altered rodents for Alzheimer's studies. ‌ However, rodents don't develop dementia naturally the way humans and cats do. Cats also exhibit similar symptoms to humans, including heightened vocalisation, confusion and disturbed sleeping habits. ‌ Dr Robert McGeachan, the study's principal investigator from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, said: "Dementia is a devastating disease - whether it affects humans, cats, or dogs. Our findings highlight the striking similarities between feline dementia and Alzheimer's disease in people. "This opens the door to exploring whether promising new treatments for human Alzheimer's disease could also help our ageing pets. Because cats naturally develop these brain changes, they may also offer a more accurate model of the disease than traditional laboratory animals, ultimately benefiting both species and their caregivers." ‌ The study examined the brains of 25 dead cats of various ages. It found those with dementia had a build-up of amyloid-beta in their synapses, mirroring the build-up seen in humans with Alzheimer's disease. The findings, published in the European Journal of Neuroscience, could shed light on the mechanisms behind this accumulation and its role in cognitive decline and brain dysfunction. Researchers noted in the cat brains that support cells appeared to be 'eating' away at the damaged synapses. This phenomenon is known as synaptic pruning. While synaptic pruning is essential for healthy brain development, it may also contribute to the synaptic damage associated with dementia. Professor Danièlle Gunn-Moore from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies said: "Feline dementia is so distressing for the cat and for its person. It is by undertaking studies like this that we will understand how best to treat them. This will be wonderful for the cats, their owners, people with Alzheimer's and their loved ones. Feline dementia is the perfect natural model for Alzheimer's, everyone benefits." The research was a collaborative effort involving experts from the Universities of Edinburgh and California, the UK Dementia Research Institute, and Scottish Brain Sciences, with backing from Wellcome and the UK Dementia Research Institute.
