Pakistan set to hold rates as Israel-Iran conflict overshadows growth push

Business Recorder21 hours ago

KARACHI: Pakistan's central bank is expected to hold its policy rate on Monday, a Reuters poll showed, as many analysts shifted their previous view of a cut in the wake of Israel's military strike on Iran, citing inflation risks from rising global commodity prices.
Israel said on Friday it targeted nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders in a 'preemptive strike' to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon.
Several brokerages had initially expected a cut but revised their forecasts after the Israeli strikes sparked fears of a broader conflict. The escalating hostilities triggered a sharp spike in oil prices - a worry for Pakistan given the broader impact on imported inflation from a potentially prolonged conflict and tightening of crude supplies.
Eleven of 14 respondents in a snap poll expected the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to leave the benchmark rate unchanged at 12%. Two forecast a 100 basis-point cut and one predicted a 50 bps cut.
'There remains an upside risk of a rise in global commodity prices in light of geopolitical tensions which could mark a return to inflationary pressures,' said Ahmad Mobeen, senior economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
'The resultant higher import bill could also threaten external sector performance and bring pressure to the exchange rate.'
Inflation in the South Asian country has been declining for several months after it soared to around 40% in May 2023.
Last month, however, inflation picked up to 3.5%, above the finance ministry's projection of up to 2%, partly due to the fading of the year-go base effects. The SBP expects average inflation between 5.5% and 7.5% for the fiscal year ending June.
The central bank paused its easing cycle in March after cumulative cuts of 1,000 basis points from a record high of 22%, and resumed it with a 100-basis-point reduction in May.
The policy meeting follows the release of a tight annual budget, which saw Pakistan raise defence spending by 20%, but overall expenditure was reduced by 7%, with GDP growth forecast at 4.2%.
Pakistan says its $350 billion economy has stabilised under a $7 billion IMF bailout that had helped it stave off a default threat.
Some analysts are sceptical of the government's ability to reach the growth target amid fiscal and external challenges.
Abdul Azeem, head of research at Al Habib Capital Markets, which forecast a 50-bp cut, said a lower rate could 'support the GDP target of 4.2% and reduce the debt financing burden.'

Airlines halt many Middle East flights

A Malaysia Airlines plane carrying the first batch of tourists arrives as Langkawi reopens to domestic tourists, amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, in Malaysia September 16, 2021. PHOTO: REUTERS Global airlines on Friday cancelled flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran and other Middle East destinations, or rerouted planes, as airspaces were shut off following Israeli strikes on Iran. Israel, Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Syria closed their airspaces after Israel hit military and nuclear facilities in Iran. Israel said Tehran launched drones in retaliation. Air India's New Delhi-Vienna and Mumbai-London flights were about to enter Iranian airspace when Israel launched its attack, forcing the planes to turn back to their origin, according to aircraft tracker Flight Aware. Its London-New Delhi flight had just entered Iranian airspace and was rerouted over Iraq before arriving in India one hour late, according to Flight Aware. Air India diverted or called back a total of 16 flights between India and London and cities in Canada and the United States "due to the emerging situation in Iran".

Kohli-backed WBL to roll out next year

The first edition of the World Bowling League (WBL), backed by celebrity cricketer Virat Kohli and baseball star Mookie Betts, will roll out with six franchises competing in iconic locations early next year, league chief Adi K. Mishra told Reuters. The WBL is looking to transform a pastime for millions around the world into a cutting edge, made-for-TV experience via a heady mix of celebrity franchise owners, exotic locations and technological innovation. "It's an incredible sport which just hasn't been structured correctly for the past 50-60 years and everyone just dismisses it as a recreational activity," Mishra, the founder and CEO of sports tech firm League Sports Co, said in a video call from the United States. "We are going to launch with six franchises in the first quarter of next year. It's going to be a team of four — two male and two female bowlers." Mishra did not go into detail about the format but said professional bowlers would compete in the core sport while celebrities would take part in auxiliary events, with teams collecting points throughout the season. With its origins in ancient Egypt, bowling's heyday in the United States was in the 1960s and 70s when every town and suburb had its own alley. Even today, some 200 million people put on flat-soled shoes and take to the lanes every year, including 75 million in the US, Mishra said. The WBL is by no means the first attempt to create a professional circuit in the Tenpin game, and American Don 'Mr Bowling' Carter was the first athlete in any sport to ink a $1 million sponsorship deal back in 1964. What separates the WBL from previous attempts, Mishra says, is its global reach — the league is in the advanced stage of finalising franchises in Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India — and the ambitious vision. "Our first fundamental premise was — how can we take this and make this an aspirational product?" Mishra added. "We want to take two lanes and put them in iconic locations around the world — Hudson Yards in New York, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, a variety of different locations in Dubai and India." Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Betts bought the first announced franchise in May and the WBL pulled off another marketing coup when Kohli came on board as a strategic investor last month. Mishra did not provide financial details of Bett's purchase but said negotiations on the sale of the remaining franchises were in the final stages. The league plans to simplify scoring, gather a host of celebrity and corporate backers, and use ball-tracking and other technology to create a product that works on television and digital platforms. Weaving complimentary programming featuring celebrity bowlers like Betts and Kohli around the core sport would make it an irresistible proposition for broadcasters, said Mishra. "We already have many broadcasters lined up and a lot of them think this sport, the way we've designed it, can fit into their ultra-premium segment. "A lot of them believe they can bring in other influencers and celebrities, who come in and bowl as well. So there's a lot of 'shoulder programming' that you can create with the sport, which is not possible with a lot of other sports." Mishra and Kohli know each other through their joint ownership of a team in the E1 electric powerboat world championship, and the cricketer's fondness for bowling came as a pleasant surprise as the WBL was being in the planning stage. "Over the years, I've met a lot of celebs who happen to be closet bowlers," Mishra said. "We were speaking about various things about the team and it turned out that he has been bowling and watching it since he was 11-12. "That was a big surprise for me and we wanted him to be part of this. Hopefully we'll get him to bowl when he has more time for it."

FPCCI slams 18pc tax on e-commerce transactions, solar panels

KARACHI: Vice President of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Muhammad Amaan Paracha has said that the federal budget for the new fiscal year does not align with the expectations of the trade, industry, and the general public. He criticised the imposition of taxes on e-commerce transactions, saying it is an unjust move. 'Unemployed youth were earning through e-commerce, and this step will stifle their potential,' he said. Expressing serious concern over the 18% tax imposed on solar panels, Paracha said the government has retrieved Rs 3 trillion through the termination of Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements — a positive move for the power sector. However, instead of formulating an effective alternative energy policy, the government has imposed 18% sales tax on solar panels. This has already caused a spike in solar panel prices in the market. 'The entire business community unanimously demands the immediate withdrawal of this sales tax,' he added. 'We had hoped for relief to help the industry stabilize, but even the agricultural sector received no support, and the government turned a blind eye to education, offering no relief,' Paracha stated. He further pointed out that the federal budget for 2025–26 contains over 40% anomalies that the government must address. The industrial sector had expected the budget to be business-friendly and in the public interest, but instead, it has led to deep disappointment. Due to rising electricity prices, industrial production costs are already extremely high, and taxing solar panels will deprive industries of cheap energy options — effectively forcing them to buy expensive electricity, which is unfair. Paracha acknowledged that given the current post-Pakistan-India war scenario, an increase in the defense budget was inevitable. He cited the regional situation, recent surge in terrorism, India's water aggression, and non-traditional threats as reasons to prioritize national security. A 21% increase in the defense budget, allocating Rs 2,550 billion, was a necessary and vital step, he said. He also urged the SBP governor to reduce the interest rate by 3% in the monetary policy scheduled to be announced on Monday. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
