
Thane to celebrate independence day with social initiatives and community engagement
While a group of activists is working out plans to provide insurance cover to tribals staying along city fringes, an NGO will celebrate the day with children from the weaker segment of society and inculcate the importance of independence among them while a complex will hold a rally in honour of our armed forces.
NGO Shree Sai Seva Sanstha from Bhiwandi has been celebrating the Independence Day week with street urchins and children from red-light areas in the textile town.
"Though underprivileged, these children are the future of our country and need to be updated about the history of our freedom struggle and also taught to value our independence," says activist Dr Swati Singh. Closer to home, Thane Citizens Foundation said they are planning to start an initiative to bring over 2,500 Yeoor tribal residents aged between 10 and 70 years under the Rs 1 lakh accidental death cover.
"These residents face risks while climbing trees or face wild animal attacks while sourcing their livelihood from the jungles.

Patamata High School student gets cash award
Vijayawada: Halima, student of Koneru Basavayya Chowdary Zilla Parishad High School in Patamata, was awarded a prize of Rs 20,000 on Friday for achieving the highest marks in her 10th-grade examinations. Call to draw inspiration from sacrifices of freedom-fighters
Ongole: The offices of various departments in the government and private administration hoisted the national flag high, and the employees in them celebrated the 79th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and gaiety on Friday. GMC bags award for best service
Guntur: Onthe occasion of Independence Day celebrations, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) was honoured with the Best Service Award for rendering outstanding services among government departments. Minister for Information Technology, Electronics & Communications, Real-Time Governance, and Human Resource Development Nara Lokesh presented the award to Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra.
