TMC's Abhishek Banerjee slams Centre for 'lack' of accountability over Pahalgam attack
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee
on Monday accused the Centre of lacking accountability over the
Pahalgam terror attack
and raised five questions, including those on border security and alleged intelligence failure.
In a long post on X, Banerjee claimed, "It has been over 55 days since the Pahalgam terror attack. It is deeply concerning that in a democracy, neither the mainstream media, members of the opposition, nor the judiciary has stepped forward to raise these five critical questions before the Government of India."

He said, "However, as a citizen committed to the nation's well-being and as a public representative entrusted with accountability, I raise these five questions before the Government of India."
The TMC leader first questioned how four heavily armed terrorists managed to infiltrate the Indian borders and carry out an attack that left 26 civilians dead.
Live Events
Calling it a "massive breach in national security", Banerjee asked who would take responsibility for the "failure".
He also targeted the Intelligence Bureau, questioning why its chief was granted a one-year extension just a month after the attack.
"If this was an intelligence failure, why was the Intelligence Bureau Chief granted a one-year extension, that too barely a month after the attack? Why was he rewarded rather than held accountable? What is the compulsion?" he asked.
Banerjee also questioned the government's "selective" use of surveillance technology.
"If the GoI can conveniently use Pegasus spyware against opposition leaders (including me), journalists and even judges, what stops it from using the same tools against terrorist networks and suspects?" he asked.
Banerjee raised doubts over the fate of the attackers in Pahalgam and demanded clarity.

"Where are the four terrorists responsible for this brutal, religion-based massacre? Are they dead or alive? If they have been neutralised, why has the government failed to make a clear statement? And if they haven't, why is the silence?" the TMC's Diamond Harbour MP wrote on social media.
He also brought up the issue of
Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir
(PoJK) and questioned the Centre's "silence" on a reported statement by the US President claiming that he persuaded India into a ceasefire with trade promises.
"When will India reclaim Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK)? Why hasn't the government officially responded to the US President's claim that he persuaded India into a ceasefire with promises of trade?" Banerjee asked.
"Just as the nation stood together irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and political affinity, celebrating the triumph of righteousness and saluting the valour and sacrifice of our armed forces, why were the emotions of 140 crore Indians disregarded?" he claimed.
In his fifth and final question, Banerjee criticised the government's diplomatic efforts after the Pahalgam incident.
"After reaching out to 33 countries post-Pahalgam in the last one month, how many extended explicit support to India?" he asked.
Banerjee questioned why, instead of being censured, Pakistan secured global support.
"If we are truly a Vishwaguru and the world's fourth-largest economy, why did the IMF and World Bank approve USD 1 billion and USD 40 billion in financial assistance and long-term investments to Pakistan immediately after the Pahalgam attack? How did a nation repeatedly involved in cross-border terrorism not only escape global scrutiny but get rewarded?" the TMC leader asked.
He added, "And more shockingly: Why was Pakistan appointed Vice-Chair of the UN Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee barely a month later?"
Banerjee concluded the post with a stinging remark on foreign policy expenditure.
"Over Rs 2000000000000 (two lakh crores) has been spent on external affairs over the past 10 years. The Indian public deserves transparency, accountability and results - not silence and spin! The nation awaits a response," he said.

Tehran is completely devastated," he said. Live Events Recalling the last few days, he said that on Thursday night, everything was normal but when they woke up next morning, the situation was completely different. "There was fear all around. We heard gunshots. The students in Tehran are really scared. Since it is the centre of the country, evacuation is also a challenge. But I have heard that students are being taken to safe locations," he added. The 21-year-old said that the internet services are also affected in the country. "It is taking three to four minutes for WhatsApp mesages to go through. That day, my father asked me whether I had food and if I was doing fine. I texted him back saying I was safe but that message took nearly half an hour to reach him," he said, and urged people back home to pray for the safety of those stuck in Iran. The medical student said they are hoping that they will be evacuated either by Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said he spoke to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar regarding students from the Union Territory stranded in Iran and was assured that necessary steps would be taken to ensure safety of all Indian students. On Sunday, Indian nationals in Iran were asked to exercise due caution and maintain contact with the Embassy of India in Tehran through its social media accounts in view of the current situation in the country following the launch of strikes by Israel. Israel on Friday last launched Operation Rising Lion to strike at Iran's nuclear, missile and military complexes. The strikes left key military commanders and nuclear scientists dead. Iran retaliated by launching waves of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel.

Diamond tycoon Mehul Choksi claims India abducted him to extract false confession
A diamond tycoon wanted in a $1.5 billion fraud case told a UK court he was kidnapped by Indian agents in 2021 and tortured to extract a confession that he colluded with political opponents to defraud local banks. Mehul Choksi , the chairman of Gitanjali Gems Ltd., sued the Indian government and five individuals involved in the alleged abduction at a London court. The Indian government denies the allegations and argued that the case shouldn't be heard in English courts. The tycoon remains in Belgium, where he was arrested in April following extradition an request from India's federal investigators. The London allegations and the £250,000 ($339,690) claim were initiated to upend India's call for his extradition, a lawyer for the Indian government said in court on Monday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Choksi, 66, and his former diamond billionaire nephew Nirav Modi , 54 fled India when fraud was unearthed at Indian state-owned banks in 2018. Modi and Choksi were the most high profile men facing charges after a series of frauds involving the diamond industry hit the banks in India, which cuts or polishes about 90% of the world's diamond supply. Modi, who remains in a UK jail, previously lost his extradition case while Choksi lived in Antigua. Modi and Choksi face charges linked to bribery, fraud and money laundering in India. Both men have previously denied any involvement in the fraud. Live Events Choksi was kidnapped from near his then home in Antigua in May 2021, his lawyers said. 'He was brutally beaten, including being punched, tasered to the face, blind-folded, tied to a wheelchair and gagged. He was knocked unconscious,' Edward Fitzgerald, Choksi's lawyer said in a court document. Choksi's lawyers said he woke up on a sailing vessel to be beaten further and threatened that he and his family would be killed if he didn't agree to return to India. Five individuals who are, or were British residents, tortured and threatened him 'to extort a false confession from him that he — in cahoots with the political opposition — was guilty of the allegations against him in India,' Fitzgerald said. Lawyers for the Indian government sought sovereign immunity. None of the alleged acts took place in the UK and the case shouldn't be heard in the UK, they said.

Call for law to ensure rights of domestic workers
Confederation of Free Trade Unions of India (CFTUI) national president N. Kanaka Rao on Monday (June 16) demanded that the Centre enact a comprehensive law to ensure the rights of domestic workers such as minimum wages, social security and legal protection as per International Labour Organisation Convention no. 189. The CFTUI organised a meeting with domestic workers on the occasion of the 15th International Domestic Workers' Day here. Addressing the participants, Mr. Kanaka Rao said 43 countries have ratified this landmark agreement and expanded the rights of domestic workers, while 56 countries have implemented labour reforms to protect the rights of domestic workers owing to the tireless efforts of many trade unions and social organisations around the world. He explained that CFTUI represents the largest number of domestic workers among all trade unions in India. But, despite the adoption of the agreement, in the past 14 years, despite several struggles led by domestic workers' associations and social organisations, the Indian government has not framed any special law for domestic workers. Expressing concern at the plight of domestic workers in the informal sector of work in India, the CFTUI president said they were largely excluded from the ambit of labour laws. He said a division bench comprising Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan had issued an order on the lack of legal protection for domestic workers in India. The court had said it was the Constitutional responsibility of the government to protect the oppressed classes. The bench had directed the Centre to constitute an expert committee comprising the departments of Labour and Employment, Social Justice and Empowerment, Women and Child Development and Law to examine the condition of domestic workers and recommend appropriate legislative measures. He said that the committee was supposed to submit its report within six months, but no action has been taken even after five months of the Supreme Court's order. On the occasion of International Domestic Workers' Day, he demanded that the Centre immediately frame a comprehensive national law for domestic workers.
