GITEX Africa 2025: Tech Fair For Key Players in Digital Economy
Morocco is gearing up to host the third edition of GITEX Africa in Marrakech from 14 to 16 April in a mega tech fest that aims to position the country and the biggest continent in the world at the forefront of the global digital shift.
The Moroccan Ministry of Digital Transition, in partnership with the Emirati group Kanoun, the main partner for GITEX Africa Morocco, organized a press conference today in Rabat to officially announce the fast-approaching event.
GITEX is organised by the Digital Development Agency (ADD) in partnership with KAOUN International and is held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform.
Speaking to Morocco World News, Mohamed Drissi Melyani, Director General of the ADD, said that GITEX Africa had 'positioned Morocco and Africa as a global digital hub' in less than two years. The event will bring together startups, investors, governments, and industry experts to discuss digital innovation and development. 'This exhibition is now a platform for building a connected and innovative digital Africa,' said Melyani.
According to the organisers, this year's edition will host 1,400 startups, up from 400 in its first edition. Delegates from more than 32 countries and over 600 public institutions are expected to attend.

The agenda includes panel discussions, masterclasses, and demonstrations of digital tools aimed at modernising public administration.
Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of KAOUN International, said: 'If you examine the global digital economy, you'll find that technology is its principal driver. Digitisation is now omnipresent –AI is in everything.'

She added that Morocco's Digital Strategy 2030 sets ambitious targets, including the creation of 240,000 jobs, training for 100,000 youths, and launching 3,000 startups.
Visitors at GITEX will have a chance to explore the latest innovations in tech and attend talks where insiders and tycoons will bounce bold ideas off each other to push Africa to a new digital era.
The organisers hope GITEX Africa will help drive progress towards these goals by encouraging innovation and investment in the digital sector.

Facilitating Mobility to Strengthen Cooperation In their joint statement, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting tourism, trade, and economic development between Morocco and Ghana. They also expressed their intention to finalize a visa exemption agreement for holders of ordinary passports. In the interim, Minister Bourita announced the immediate implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorization to Morocco (ETAM) system for Ghanaian citizens, allowing them to obtain visas online within 24 hours. «We've agreed to make mobility easier for our citizens», said Minister Ablakwa during the press briefing. «Although there is already a direct air link between Ghana and Morocco, the visa has been the main barrier to trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchange. Morocco to Boost Maritime Transport Capacity for Summer Rush with 520 Weekly Crossings
Morocco will reinforce its maritime transport services with 520 weekly crossings between the country and Southern Europe as part of the 'Marhaba 2025' summer transit operation, a government spokesperson said on Thursday. The enhanced maritime offering aims to accommodate increased passenger traffic during the summer period, Minister Delegate for Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesperson, Mustapha Baitas, pointed out at a press briefing following the weekly Cabinet meeting. Under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, the operation will support the transit of up to 500,000 passengers and 130,000 vehicles each week, Baitas said. A total of 29 vessels operated by seven shipping companies will provide 12 maritime routes connecting Moroccan ports with those in Spain, France and Italy, he added. The government has also stepped up support measures, including reinforced border control systems, 24 reception centers—18 in Morocco and six abroad—and the deployment of medical teams along key roads and rest stops. Rabat – Morocco announced a new major milestone for Moroccan and international students with British university degrees. A statement from the British Council announced the news, noting that the measure is part of the UK-Morocco strategic dialogue launched during the visit of British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on June 1-2. During this visit, Morocco witnessed a milestone in its ongoing momentum of support for its territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces, as the UK joined the growing chorus backing the Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible political framework to end the Western Sahara dispute. 'A special stakeholder breakfast was held in Rabat during he visit, bringing together key players- business leaders, educators, English teachers, and policy makers,' the statement said, highlighting the growing role of English in Morocco. Room for growth in Morocco's English education Despite the growing appeal of the English language among many in Morocco, the country continues to lag in English proficiency. The English Proficiency Index last year shows that Morocco remains 76th out of 116 countries listed, with a score of 479. The score is marginally above the global average of 477. The data shows that the North African country remains at a low proficiency level in Africa, ranking ninth among 24 other countries listed in the ranking. This means that Morocco's ranking is classified as low, with minimal progress despite pledges to enhance English education. Morocco's cities like Rabat stand out as the top-performing city in Morocco, with a score of 510, far ahead of El Jadida and Casablanca. Last year, the Ministry of Education stressed the importance of expanding the English language in Morocco's education, promising that English expansion teaching will cover 50% of preparatory education and 100% of the second year of education. With reports confirming that French dominates the education ecosystem in Morocco, the British Council issued a report in 2022, acknowledging a growing interest in English learning.
