Minister Puri calls for deeper collaboration with Canada on dismantling terrorism

Mint3 hours ago

New Delhi: India's petroleum and natural gas minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday called for deeper collaboration with Canada to dismantle terrorism and mitigate the risks of radicalization, speaking at the 40th anniversary memorial of the Air India Flight 182 (Kanishka) bombing in Ahakista, Cork, Ireland.
Air India Flight 182 was destroyed mid-air by a bomb planted by Canada-based terrorists, killing all 329 on board, including over 80 children, on 23 June 1985.
Puri described the tragedy as not an accident but a 'deliberate, heinous act carried out by fringe elements seeking to divide India.'
Terrorism and extremism are modern-day threats, Puri said, urging India and Canada to work in tandem through intelligence sharing, counter-radicalisation efforts, and the disruption of terror financing, the ministry of petroleum and natural gas (MoPNG) said in a statement.
'India has suffered the scourge of terrorism for decades — from Jammu & Kashmir to Punjab to Mumbai. Time and again, our people have endured bombings, assassinations, and atrocities,' he said. "Let today's commemoration be a united message—those who spread hate and terror will never prevail over humanity, democracy, and friendship.'
Puri also noted that in the aftermath of the tragedy, India and Ireland have developed strong bilateral ties, with trade reaching nearly $16 billion in 2023.
He said Indian agencies are working continuously to dismantle terror fronts, with the help of global partners. 'India stands ready to do more. Our security agencies, intelligence apparatus, and diplomatic channels are fully committed to partnering with the world to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated," he said.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Canadian Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree, local Irish officials, first responders, and families of victims were present at the memorial, the MoPNG statement said.
The statement comes days after prime minister Narendra Modi's remarks at the G7 summit in Canada earlier this month, calling on all countries to unite against terrorism. Modi had said last week that the Pahalgam terror attack in April was not just an attack on India, but on all humanity.
In his address on 17 June, he also called for strict action against those nations that support terrorist outfits.
The Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April claimed the lives of 26 tourists in Jammu & Kashmir.
In retaliation, India launched 'Operation Sindoor', a counterterrorism operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of 7 May. Pakistan's military responded by targeting civilian and military infrastructure in India, escalating the conflict, according to multiple briefing by military and external affairs ministry officials.
The fighting between India and Pakistan lasted four days, until 10 May, when military officials from both sides negotiated a ceasefire.
However, Operation Sindoor remains ongoing, according to PM Modi, who announced a new counterterrorism doctrine for India. In his 12 May address to the nation, Modi said India will retaliate against terrorist attacks on its own terms, will not tolerate nuclear blackmail, and will make no distinction between terrorists and the governments that harbour them.

US embassy tells student visa applicants to make social media profiles public

All Indians applying for student visas or exchange visitor visas to the United States now need to make their social media profiles public, the US embassy in India said on Monday. The instructions were for F, M and J category of non-immigrant visas. The F visa is for academic studies, M for vocational training and J for cultural exchange. The change, effective immediately, is aimed at enabling background checks during the visa screening process to establish applicants' 'identity and admissibility" to the US, the embassy said. The US has required visa applicants to submit social media identifiers since 2019, the diplomatic mission said in a statement. 'We use all available information in our visa screening and vetting to identify visa applicants who are inadmissible to the United States including those who pose a threat to US national security,' it added. Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J nonimmigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to public to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States… — U.S. Embassy India (@USAndIndia) June 23, 2025 The directive follows the recent US announcement to resume student visa appointments. On Wednesday, the State Department directed US embassies to restart visa processes. However, it had stated that applicants must unlock their social media profiles for review. The Trump administration had on May 27 instructed embassies globally to halt student visa interviews until further notice. Post resumption of the visa services, US consular officers have been told to examine applications to identify those who 'bear hostile attitudes toward our citizens, culture, government, institutions or founding principles', Reuters quoted an internal State Department document as saying. The document, sent by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, instructed officials to look for 'applicants who demonstrate a history of political activism, especially when it is associated with violence'. In cases involving such applicants, officers must consider the likelihood that they would continue such activities in the US as well, the document said. The US had paused scheduling student visa interviews amid Trump's clash with top universities in the country, including Harvard, which he has accused of promoting Left-wing views, enabling antisemitism on campus and supporting discriminatory admissions policies. His administration has taken aggressive actions to try to enforce its demands, including freezing hundreds of millions of dollars in university funding, revoking visas and attempting to deport international students. However, many of these measures have been blocked by the courts. More than 1.1 million international students were enrolled in US universities during the academic year 2023-'24, accounting for 6% of those pursuing higher education in the country, according to US-based non-governmental organisation Institute of International Education. India sent the highest number of students, followed by China, it added.

President Murmu best example of women-led development in India: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, June 23 (UNI) Describing President Droupadi Murmu as the best example of women-led development in India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that under her leadership as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, the historic Operation Sindoor was carried out, instilling fear in the minds of terrorists. He commended her for constantly encouraging the Armed Forces personnel, while also working relentlessly for the empowerment of the deprived sections of society, a Defence Ministry statement said. 'Through her own life, President Murmu has set an inspiring example for everyone to have access to education and equal rights and opportunities. The ideals of courage, hard work, public service and spirituality are visible in her life and these can be read in her speeches as well,' he added. Rajnath Singh released a book 'Wings to Our Hopes (Volume-II)', a curated collection of 51 speeches of the President in Hindi and English along with the e-version. In his address, Rajnath described the compilation of speeches - ranging from address to the nation as well as at universities, on innovation, contribution of women in the development of the country, equality and the cultural heritage - as the essence of the Government's vision of making India a developed nation by 2047. 'The book will become a guiding light to build Viksit Bharat with progressive thoughts while preserving our glorious heritage. President Droupadi Murmu knows the importance of diversity in our country and recognises the pain of the deprived. This book proclaims the spirit of equality,' he said. He added that the book is an amalgamation of the knowledge and ideas of President Droupadi Murmu on diverse fields - from civilisation to culture, religion to science, art to literature, education to health and past to future. He termed this inclusiveness as a reflection of the character of India, which can prove to be beneficial for future generations. The Defence Minister made special mention of some of the President's thoughts, dubbing them as national priorities of the Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking on the occasion, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the 'Wings to Our Hopes (Volume-II)' as a medium to understand contemporary issues from the point of view of the 'First Citizen' of the country and hoped that it will introduce public welfare ideas of the President to the future generations. Compiled by the Rashtrapati Bhavan and published by Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, this second volume follows its predecessor in chronicling the evolving discourse on governance, inclusivity, and national aspirations.
