Justin Fields Assessment Should Fire Up NY Giants Fans

The New York Jets are hoping to hit on their recent quarterback acquisition, Justin Fields. After spending time with Aaron Rodgers under center, the Jets mutually split with the veteran quarterback this offseason. Fields enters the picture and both teams are hoping for a positive fresh start.
A reporter asked New York Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux how it's going for Fields in a Jets uniform from his perspective. The veteran didn't hold back, claiming that Fields was doing a lot more running than throwing.

Is this a shot at Fields for not being able to read the coverage and settle in to get his throws off? Or is it Thibodeaux simply pointing out that the Giants' pass rush has been so dominant that they haven't given Fields a chance to get comfortable in the pocket? If it's the latter, Giants fans should feel fired up.
All offseason long, the Giants' pass rush has been one of the brightest spots when it comes players or reporters assessing the team. This week, the Giants have been able to put their rush to the test in practice against the other New York-based organization, and it seems to be going well for Big Blue.

He played in just 12 games last season, which amounted to 28 tackles, eight for a loss, and 5.5 sacks. That's a down year compared to his 50 tackles, 12 for a loss, and 11.5 sacks in 2023, when he played 17 games for the first and only time this year.
With the Giants adding another dominant pass rusher to the picture in Abdul Carter, that should only make it more difficult for offensive lines to place their attention on everybody, including Thibodeaux. There might be more cooks in the kitchen, but that should put more food on Thibodeaux's plate.
After a week of joint practices with the Jets, the Giants will take the field at MetLife Stadium for the first time this preseason on Saturday. Giants fans are unlikely to get a long look at their full pass rush—if any at all.
Meanwhile, Fields could suit up and continue working on learning his new system in New York. The veteran quarterback is on his third team since getting drafted 11th overall in 2021.
Fields spent his first three seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. Last year, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he started in six of the 10 games he appeared in. Back in March, Fields signed a two-year deal with the Jets. He's expected to be the team's full-time starter this year.
With 44 starts under his belt, Fields holds a 14-30 record. He has thrown for 7,780 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions.

After spring tryout, New York Giants add Chase Lane to scouting department

In an unusual move, the New York Giants have reportedly added Chase Lane, who participated in their rookie minicamp in May, to their scouting department. Lane, who saw action in all 13 games for Georgia Tech last season as a wide receiver, earned his bachelor's degree in communication/broadcast media from Texas A&M in December 2022. From Sports Illustrated: Lane finished his final two collegiate seasons at Georgia Tech but spent his undergraduate tenure as a Texas A&M Aggie. Lane was invited to the Giants rookie minicamp earlier this year as a tryout candidate. After not receiving an invitation to training camp from the Giants or any other team, Lane pivoted to a scouting role with the franchise, taking advantage of a chance to participate in the Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship, which provides aspiring player personnel an avenue to learn from NFL front offices. While at Georgia Tech, Lane studied literature, media, and communication.

NFL insider: New York Giants' Cam Skattebo 'probably not going to make it' for Week 1

New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo (hamstring) won't play against the New York Jets in the team's second preseason game on Saturday night and will likely miss the final preseason game on Thursday versus the New England Patriots as well. We may not see Skattebo for a while. The Giants aren't likely to place him on injured reserve (IR) before cutdown day, but he could conceivably sit out the first several games of the regular season. Head coach Brian Daboll, who has been cagey and cryptic with injury updates, may have given a hint as far back as two weeks ago about Skattebo's timetable. "He's working back from rehabbing something, so had a little bit of setback," Daboll told reporters on August 2. "Day-by-day." Some have seen that as "day-to-day," but Daboll chose his verbiage carefully. Although an earlier MRI yielded positive results, ESPN's Jordan Raanan feels that Skattebo is "probably not going to make it" back in time for Week 1. "He's still sidelined. He's not working on the side at practice. We don't see him outside at practice at all," Raanan said on Breaking Big Blue. "Makes you think he's not that close to returning. Cam Skattebo's start of the season look, at the very least, to be in serious jeopardy." Skattebo, who showed off his wares early on in camp, was quickly becoming a fan favorite. The fourth-round pick out of Arizona State is known for his high-energy and physical running style. He also has displayed fine hands in the passing game and has a penchant for breaking tackles. The Giants could end up placing Skattebo in IR after they cut their roster down to 53 players. That way, he can return after four weeks. If they place him on IR before the 53-man roster is finalized, he will have to sit out the entire season.

Commanders activate star receiver Terry McLaurin in contract drama twist

Terry McLaurin has been activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list Saturday, but it remains to be seen if the Commanders' receiver will strike a new deal with the team before the regular season begins. McLaurin, who had been designated to the PUP list with an ankle issue, was fined $200,000 by the organization for missing the first four days of training camp in July in a contract dispute. AP Advertisement McLaurin's clearance 'is the next step in his progression, but unrelated to negotiations,' ESPN's Adam Schefter posted Saturday on X. 'A small step….as he's set to ramp up — the next step in returning to practice,' NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added on the social media site. 'There is no indication of progress on an extension. But with the season looming, McLaurin will begin the process of getting his body ready.' Other top receivers like Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and DK Metcalf have recently received extensions from their respective teams. Bill Kostroun/New York Post The two-time Pro Bowler has recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past five NFL seasons, including 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns in 17 games in 2024 as the primary target for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Advertisement 'It feels good to be around my teammates and around the fans,' McLaurin told reporters after reporting to camp last month. 'I can't beat that at all. They showed me a lot of love and support. You lose sight of some things when the business gets involved, but I never lost sight of the way they supported me. It's business, but it has nothing to do with them.' The Commanders went 12-5 during the regular season last year and advanced to the NFC Championship game before losing to the Eagles. They will face the Bengals in their second preseason game Monday night, and open the season at home against the Giants on Sept. 7.
