Londoners are trying to explain Hackney to Americans after Charli XCX's wedding
If there's one part of London that's changed significantly over the years, it's Hackney.
The borough has long been home to some of the most deprived areas in England, with a history of poverty and various other social challenges.
But lately parts of it have been heavily gentrified, with spots like Dalston and London Fields now touted as 'artsy' and 'trendy', while in 2023, Hackney Wick was even named the 'coolest' place to live in the whole of the capital.
As such, some might now say that Hackney is pretty 'brat' and this weekend's events seem to confirm as much…
That's because Charli XCX — real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison — got married there. The popstar tied the knot to The 1975 drummer George Daniel this weekend in a low-key ceremony in Hackney.

And while some can't stop talking about Charli's stunning Vivienne Westwood mini dress and the wild afterparty she and her new hubby had that evening, there's one other thing that's captured people's attention: the venue.
The pair married at Hackney Town Hall, a grade II-listed art deco building, before heading to a restaurant nearby and finishing the night at Ellie's bar in Haggerston.
Many were quick to brand a Hackney wedding as 'iconic', 'so rock and roll' and 'a vibe', but there were some who were left confused by the choice.
Americans, in particular, have been scratching their heads, with some taking to the comments of TikTok to ask Londoners to 'explain Hackney' to them, and it's fair to say the responses were… interesting.

There were some attempts to compare Hackney to parts of New York, with @nickem141 writing: 'It's like a (slightly) more chic Brooklyn.'
While @safsrevenge replied: 'Idk America but maybe like The Bronx, formerly ghetto but gentrified now but still mainly ghetto.'
Others also pointed out Hackney's past, with a user known as @user23874012934 saying: 'I think it's just that you'd think millionaires would get married somewhere that's not Hackney. Not that deep.'
Another suggested Charli might have chosen the area specifically because it matched the 'image she tried to sell with Brat', and @catkosetenko agreed, claiming that it was a 'diverse hipster area where young people go partying a lot.'

But those who had lived in Hackney their whole lives thought the idea of a celebrity wedding taking place there was 'mad'.
@sinead.ma shared: 'Hackney Town Hall… what the heck.
'As someone who's lived here my whole life, yeah that's mad. Hilarious how upmarket people find it now.
'It's crazy the effect gentrification has. The only people that think this is cool [are] people who don't come from Hackney.'
And @simmaaaaay1 felt similarly, posting: 'I seriously laugh. Gentrification has really done its big one.'
Regardless, it's worth pointing out that Charli is thought to have an apartment in Hackney, so the venue might just have been chosen because she lives nearby and loves the area.
The couple are also said to be having a planned 'second' wedding in Sicily later this year, which is expected to be much more of a lavish event than this one.
An insider told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: 'There will be no expense spared. It's costing tens of thousands of pounds, and visually it will be mesmerising.
'Charli and George said they wanted a massive party, and there are no restrictions on when the bar has to close, so it can go on all night.'
The source added: 'It's going to be pretty star-studded too, with plenty of their celeb mates making the journey over to Sicily to watch them say 'I do.' Charli and George are so excited to become man and wife.'

US FCC clears $8bn Skydance-Paramount merger
An $8bn (£5.9bn) merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media has been approved by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).The merger between the independent film studio and one of Hollywood's oldest and most storied companies was first announced in 2024. The approval came just weeks after Paramount Global agreed to pay $16m (£13.5m) to settle a legal dispute with US President Donald Trump over an interview it broadcast on subsidiary CBS with former Vice-President Kamala head Brendan Carr, who was appointed by the president, announced the merger's approval on Thursday, saying he welcomed Skydance's ideas to make "significant changes" at CBS. The FCC agreed to transfer broadcast licenses for 28 owned-and-operated CBS television stations to the new owner. "Americans no longer trust the legacy national news media to report fully, accurately, and fairly," Mr Carr said. "It is time for a change."Mr Carr said Skydance had made promises to the agency, including a "commitment to unbiased journalism" where the merged company would install a ombudsman to evaluate complaints of bias. Skydance also promised to end diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, something the Trump administration has targeted. The FCC voted 2-1 to approve the deal, with one commissioner, Anna Gomez, a Democrat, dissenting."After months of cowardly capitulation to this administration, Paramount finally got what it wanted. Unfortunately, it is the American public who will ultimately pay the price for its actions," she wrote. Paramount Global traces its origins back more than a century to the founding of Paramount Pictures Corporation in 1914. The studio has made many hit films, including the Godfather, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible owns streaming service Paramount+, as well as Paramount Pictures, CBS, Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, Comedy Central and other media the entertainment giant has struggled over the past decade. Skydance is owned by David Ellison, the son of Larry Ellison, who founded US technology giant FCC's approval was necessary for the deal to move forward. The deal, which includes CBS, Paramount Pictures and Comedy Central, was approved after a series of moves by Paramount, including settling a lawsuit by US President Donald to both the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, the settlement over the 60 Minutes interview was agreed - with the help of mediator - so as to not affect the planned merger, which the FCC was reviewing and therefore Trump technically had the power to had alleged the network had deceptively edited an interview that aired on its 60 Minutes news programme with his presidential election rival Kamala Harris, to "tip the scales in favour of the Democratic party".Paramount said it would pay to settle the suit, but with the money allocated to Trump's future presidential library, not paid to him "directly or indirectly".It also comes just days after CBS, owned by Paramount, announced it would end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, who has been critical of Trump. The network said the move "is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night [television]" and "is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters".

Joe Rogan says Hunter Biden 'could be president'
By Joe Rogan has praised Hunter Biden as Democrats' next great hope after the presidential scion's ranting three-hour interview tackled everything from his crack-cocaine addiction to the failures of the party. 'He could be president,' Rogan declared on Wednesday's episode of the Joe Rogan Experience while featuring a clip of Biden's viral sit-down with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan. Rogan lauded Biden for his frankness and intellect around the subject off addiction, adding that 'he's a lot smarter than people give him credit for.' During Biden's interview with Callaghan, the scandal-scarred first son explained the psychology behind addiction and Americans' perceptions of crack-cocaine, leading Rogan to call it 'the greatest crack advertisement of all time.' 'If crack wasn't terrible for you, this guy makes me want to try crack,' Rogan told guest Joe DeRosa on his podcast Wednesday. 'I'm not going to. I'm not giving any advice, but I'm saying this guy, like legitimately this might be the best advertisement for crack of all-time. 'He's a lot smarter than people give him credit for,' Rogan continued. 'He's talking, and one of the things he was talking about was why smoking things are so addictive, why smoking cigarettes are so addictive, and the psychology behind it. He's not dumb. 'But he's just a guy who became an addict, and that [expletive] your whole life up. It [expletive] you. You become a subhuman.' 'And your dad is one of the most famous people on the planet. It's so crazy. Rogan then played the clip of Biden explaining crack addiction. 'He could be president. How about that? He could. No [expletive]. Hunter Biden, after all he'd been through, look, his dirty laundry's all out there. We all see it. He was a freak.' He added: 'He's smarter than his dad when his dad was young, and he was a crackhead.' A day earlier, conservative commentator 'Comfortably Smug' of the Ruthless podcast hailed Biden as 'the Joe Rogan of the left,' earning a shout-out from Megyn Kelly. On Kelly's own show Tuesday, she called Biden's honesty 'entertaining.' 'A little misguided on pointing the finger at others, many others for doing things that he himself has done,' she said. '[But] it was very entertaining to see him break out the machine gun, the rhetorical machine gun, and go after every prominent democrat .' Breitbart editor-in-chief Alex Marlow branded Biden's interview 'the most entertaining content [he'd] watched all year', calling him 'the left's Joe Rogan in waiting.' The interview, during which Biden teed off on everyone from James Carville to George Clooney, has secured nearly 2.5 million views on YouTube. 'What right do you have to step on a man who's given 52 years of his [expletive] life to the services of this country and decide that you, George Clooney, are going to take out basically a full page ad in the [expletive] New York Times to undermine the president,' Biden said of the actor, who turned on the president after his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump in 2024.
