Bahrain Dominate Oman

TDT | Manama
Bahrain hit the ground running in the U16 Asia Cup Gulf Qualifiers, sweeping aside Oman 96–44 in front of a buzzing home crowd at the BBA Arena in Umm Al Hassam.
The hosts raced to a 31–11 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, controlling the game on both ends of the court. By half-time, the score was 60–23.
Key figures deliver for hosts
Rassem AlMarzouki rotated Bahrain's squad well throughout, supported by assistant Hani Alam. Five players from Manama Club featured, including Ali Al Ferdousi and Mohammed Farhan, while Al Ahli and Muharraq also had strong representation.
Hassan Abdelkadir led the charge with a powerful dunk, multiple blocks, and calm freethrow shooting. Yousif AlSamahiji, who won the Bahraini Premier League with Al Ahli, impressed alongside Hassan AlSamahiji, who competed in the 2024 Bahrain ISF Gymnasiade 3x3 event.
Oman's biggest threat, Adam Sulaiman, started brightly but was forced off with injury in the third quarter. Almulham Al Obaidani showed glimpses of promise for a side featuring players from Seeb, Sohar, and Nizwa. Despite encouragement from fellow Tunisian coach Zuhair Al Ayachi and assistant Ali Ismaeel Al Balushi, Bahrain's depth was too strong to overcome.
Speaking after the game, Bahrain's head coach Rassem Al Marzouki remained positive: 'Alhamdulillah, we came away with a good impression. We gave all our players a chance and used the opportunity to try different things, especially with the full squad available. Tomorrow, the real tournament begins — we're the only team playing three matches in a row without rest. We'll adjust our defensive strategy, study Kuwait's strengths and weaknesses, and prepare in morning training. We scored 20 points late, we fought hard on both ends, and I believe all our players played well so that's the foundation of a strong team. InshAllah, we'll make the Bahraini crowd proud.'
Crowd energy and royal support
Drums and music filled the stands as the crowd spurred Bahrain through every play. Notable attendees included HH Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Vice President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, and Alaa Mudara, President of the Bahrain Basketball Association.
Timeouts were used tactically by both sides, but Bahrain's rhythm rarely faltered. Leading 79–31 after three quarters, Bahrain closed out the match 96–44.
Eyes on Kuwait
Bahrain return to action today at 7:30pm against Kuwait, who beat UAE 63–44 in their opener. Saudi Arabia face UAE earlier at 5:00pm.
The tournament, held from July 7 to 12, features five Gulf teams—Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia—and acts as the qualifying stage for September's FIBA Asia U16 Championship in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Bahrain Outclassed in AFC Debut

TDT | Manama Bahrain's U20 women fall 8–0 to Uzbekistan in AFC qualifying opener Bahrain's under-20 women's national football team began their AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2026 qualifying campaign with a heavy 8–0 defeat to hosts Uzbekistan in Tashkent. Playing at Do'stlik Stadium, the Bahrainis struggled from the outset against an organised and clinical Uzbek side that exploited defensive gaps and maintained control throughout the match. Uzbekistan's attacking depth and physical advantage overwhelmed Bahrain, who failed to register a meaningful attempt on goal. This was Bahrain's first appearance in AFC U20 Women's qualification — a historic step for the programme. However, their preparations were disrupted by travel issues en route to Uzbekistan. The side arrived only a day before kickoff and appeared off-rhythm in their continental debut. Led by head coach Khalid Al Harban, Bahrain are competing in Group G alongside Jordan, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Uzbekistan. Only the group winners and three best runners-up from the eight qualifying groups will advance to the final tournament in Thailand next April. Bahrain now face Jordan on Friday at 3:30pm (Bahrain time), followed by their final group match against the Northern Mariana Islands on Sunday at the same time. Both matches will also take place in Tashkent.

Bahrain Set for Qatar Test Ahead of Arab Cup Push

TDT | Manama Talajic's new-look squad meets Qatar as Arab Cup prep begins Bahrain's senior men's national football team will travel to Doha next month for a friendly against regional rivals Qatar, the Bahrain Football Association (BFA) confirmed on Wednesday. The match is set for September 3 at Al Thumama Stadium, with kick-off at 6:15pm Bahrain time. It serves as a key part of Bahrain's build-up to the FIFA Arab Cup 2025, which will also take place in Qatar this December. Qatar, ranked 53rd globally and fifth in Asia, are preparing for both the Arab Cup and the AFC fourth-round qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting in October. The friendly allows both teams to test tactical setups and assess squad depth. A second friendly is also being arranged, with Bahrain possibly facing the UAE on September 8 in Dubai. Talks are ongoing. The Emiratis, 65th in the world and 10th in Asia, are also prepping for the Arab Cup and World Cup qualifying. Bahrain, ranked 89th globally and 12th in Asia, recently held a training camp in Maribor, Slovenia, led by head coach Dragan Talajic. The camp included three friendlies: a 2-1 win over NK Primorje Ajdovščina, a 3-1 victory against NK Šobec Lesce, and a 1-3 loss to Croatian top-flight side NK Istra 1961. Talajic used the camp to introduce new talent. The 28-man squad excluded veterans Ismaeel Abdullatif, Ali Haram, Mohammed Al Rumaihi, and retired goalkeeper Sayed Mohammed Jaafar, the country's most-capped player. Key midfielder Mohammed Jassim Marhoon missed out due to club duties, while rising star Sayed Ahmed Al Wadaie remained with Bahrain's U23 Olympic team. Newer call-ups included Abdulla Al Subaie, Hussain Jameel, Omar Saber, Ahmed Dhiya, and goalkeepers Yousef Habib and Mohammed Al Gharabli, most of whom are uncapped. Before the Arab Cup, Bahrain must win a qualifying playoff in November against Djibouti to enter the group stage. A win places them in Group D with Algeria, Iraq, and the Lebanon–Sudan qualifier winner.

Bahrain Run Japan to the Wire

TDT | Manama Bahrain's under-19 team began their IHF Men's Youth World Championship campaign in Group G with a frustrating 32–30 defeat to Japan, in a match that remained tight from start to finish. Tied 15–15 at half-time, Bahrain matched the continental champions stride for stride. The result leaves Bahrain needing wins from their remaining group fixtures against Egypt and South Korea to advance to the main round. The match, held at Cairo Stadium in Egypt, drew an attendance of 600. Al Falahi Leads Offensively Line player Sayed Ahmed Al Falahi led Bahrain's scoring with eight goals from 12 attempts, consistently converting from close range against Japan's 6–0 defensive shape. His presence in the middle gave Bahrain a reliable scoring outlet throughout the match. Ali Abbas added five goals and six assists, while Salman Al Showaikh scored four from five. Bahrain's central attacking unit performed well under pressure, creating chances and drawing fouls in key phases. Japan's Key Players Step Up While Bahrain were competitive, Japan's depth and efficiency made the difference. Sora Furusawa led their attack with seven goals from eight shots, often exploiting gaps from the backcourt. Kaisei Akiyoshi contributed five goals, and goalkeeper Toshiya Obata finished with 11 saves, several of them decisive in the final stretch. Japan's 18 goals from 9 metres (58%) underlined their shooting range, an area where Bahrain managed just two conversions from nine attempts. Defensive Work Stands Out Bahrain recorded 21 steals, doubling Japan's total, and applied consistent pressure on passing lanes. Mohamed Aadam played a key role with five steals, four assists, and two goals, while also earning two penalties. His all-round effort anchored Bahrain's transitions. However, five technical errors and missed opportunities from distance left Bahrain chasing the game late on, despite strong defensive numbers. Next Test: The Hosts Bahrain now face the Egyptians tonight at 7:30PM (Bahrain time). Egypt, reigning African champions and hosts, were also in action yesterday against South Korea. Bahrain will complete the group stage on Friday against South Korea. To progress, Bahrain must finish in the top two. Head coach Raed Al Marzooq will look to sharpen the attack and manage player rotation as the tournament intensifies.
