Senior Citizens Bill Expected To Be Tabled Next Year

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The government has completed the draft for the Senior Citizens Bill, which aims to protect the rights and well-being of the elderly, and is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said her ministry plans to submit the draft to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) by the end of this year.
At the moment, she said, the ministry is engaging in further consultations with industry players and state governments, including those in Sabah and Sarawak.
'What we are doing now is that we need to go back to the industry players, the stakeholders, to talk to them again. And we also have to refer to every state.
'So this is an ongoing thing, because the bill is not just going to be for us over in the peninsula. It's also for various states, especially those in the Borneo side,' she told a press conference after officiating the ASEAN + Republic of Korea Conference on Care and Support for Older Persons, here today.
Also present was Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN, Lee Jang Keun.
Nancy further added that the increasing interest in the caregiving industry has contributed to the need for wider consultations.
'We want to expedite this. It's just that there are quite a number of people who are coming in with a lot of things, and this industry is booming. A lot of people are interested in it and they want to be a part of the lawmaking process through the consultation,' she added.

MCMC Seeks TikTok's Clarification On Rising Parental Concerns Over PK Battle Trend
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will meet with TikTok's management to seek clarification following growing parental concerns over the popular PK Battle or Personal Knockout Battle trend among the app's young users. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry is taking the matter seriously, particularly regarding reports of children spending large sums of money on in-app gifts simply to participate in the trend. He said an official directive was issued this morning, and the ministry expects TikTok representatives to respond soon, no later than this week. 'This issue has been reported by the media, and we are taking it seriously. Since TikTok has obtained its operating licence here, they need to come forward to provide an explanation and state what steps can be taken to resolve this problem,' he told a press conference after visiting the Kubang Semang National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) here today. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Fahmi also stressed that the government is committed to protecting minors from inappropriate content on social media platforms. 'That is why we have consistently said that children under 13 should not have accounts on TikTok, Instagram, or any other social media platform. They are highly impressionable and can easily be drawn into trends like PK Battle without understanding the consequences,' he said. On May 28, a non-governmental organisation, Pertubuhan Damai Revolusi Masyarakat, submitted a memorandum to Istana Negara urging royal intervention to ban the PK Battle feature in Malaysia. The group also called on the government to consider the request, arguing that the trend undermines social values and promotes cyberbullying and humiliation. On another development, Fahmi said that efforts to establish the Malaysian Media Council (MMM) are ongoing, though certain financial processes may take time.

The two assemblymen were charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, while Tei was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the same law. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in jail and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutors Nurul Izzati Sapifee and Rustam Sanip appeared for the prosecution. Yusof and Andi Muhammad Suryady were represented by lawyers Datuk Ram Singh, Shahlan Jufri and Ridzwandean Borhan, while Tei was represented by Edward Paul. Yusof and Andi Muhammad Suryady were each granted bail of RM50,000 in one surety, while Tei was allowed RM60,000 bail in one surety.
