FRIM enhances efforts to commercialise forest resource-based research
FRIM said the initiative represents a strategic effort by the institute to support Malaysia's aspiration of becoming a high-tech nation by the year 2030.
'In line with the Forestry Research Institute Malaysia Act 2016 and the National Research, Development, Innovation, Commercialisation and Economic (RDICE) Roadmap, FRIM plays a key role within the national innovation ecosystem by fostering collaboration between the research sector, industry, and government.
'This effort is guided by the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (NSTIP) 2021-2030, which aims to achieve research and innovation investments totaling RM85.7 billion,' FRIM said in a statement.
It added that it plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between research laboratories and the market by actively participating in national initiatives such as Malaysia Commercialisation Year and working closely with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
According to FRIM, several approaches have been implemented to drive innovation, including the provision of technology packages, product certification, technical advisory services, and incubation activities through its Innovation and Commercialisation Division.
'FRIM's intellectual property is managed through the Technology Information Management System (TIMS), ensuring that innovation outputs are well-protected and ready for commercialisation. These efforts are further supported by its wholly owned subsidiary, FRIM Incorporated Sdn Bhd, which plays a pivotal role in facilitating technology licensing and translating research outcomes to meet market demands,' it said.
'Among FRIM's key achievements is the successful commercialisation of clones and extracts from local herbs such as Kacip Fatimah (Labisia pumila) and Cucur Atap (Baeckea frutescens) which are now incorporated into natural wellness products with strong potential to enter international markets.
The institute also provides consultancy and technology transfer services to both government agencies and the private sector. These services encompass a wide range of areas, including biomass product development, plantation silviculture, eco-friendly product certification, and biodiversity mapping.
In addition, FRIM offers expertise in the development of nature trails and ecotourism projects, contributing to efforts in environmental sustainability.
'Through strategic collaborations with various local and international organisations, FRIM is also actively involved in implementing greening initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity and raising public awareness on the importance of reforestation,' it added.
FRIM stressed that the success in creating both commercial and social value from research outcomes underscores how forest resource-based scientific innovation can significantly contribute to national economic development.
In line with this, FRIM remains committed to leading the development of an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable forest-based industry for the benefit of the nation.

PITAS: The celebration of Hari Sabah continues to gain momentum since it was officially gazetted three years ago, with growing awareness among communities, especially in rural areas said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. Speaking at a press conference in conjunction with the Hari Sabah 2025 district-level celebration held at Tamu Kanibongan, last Sunday, he said the event was first marked in Tambunan before moving to Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu last year, where it was celebrated on a larger scale for the first time. Advertisement The celebration in Pitas saw more than 2,000 people in attendance, where each received a 5kg bag of rice and stood a chance to win lucky draw prizes. Traditional dance performances and karaoke sessions were also held. 'This year, apart from Padang Merdeka, Hari Sabah is also being celebrated in several districts, including Pitas, Keningau, Sandakan, Kota Marudu and Tuaran,' he said. Jeffrey noted that understanding of Sabah's history has improved, reflected in how people now embrace the State flag compared to the past. 'In the early years, when we distributed the Sabah flag, many people did not know what it was. Now, everyone wants one. This shows that awareness is growing, though more still needs to be done,' he said. Also present were Assistant Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation who is also State representative for Pitas Datuk Ruddy Awah, Sabah Padi and Rice Board (LPBS) General Manager Datuk Madiyem Layapan, Assistant District Officer Jasri, and others. Meanwhile, in conjunction with the event, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry through Ko-Nelayan channelled RM169,400 in financial assistance under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) initiative to fishing communities in Kudat, Pitas, Kota Marudu and Banggi Island. Jeffrey said the programme, part of the 12th Malaysia Plan, aims to raise income and socio-economic status of fishermen and fisheries entrepreneurs through schemes such as i-Nelayan for boats and fishing gear, i-Hiliran for downstream product processing, and i-Aquaculture for expanding farming ventures. In total, 19 recipients from the Kudat region benefited under the Income Enhancement Programme, while one participant received aid from the Natural Disaster Welfare Fund. Jeffrey also approved Ruddy's appeal to include Pitas as the seventh district under the LPBS during the event, joining Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Tuaran, Papar, Keningau and Tenom. Malaysia reinforces role in radiation tech safety

Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia continues to reinforce its role in the regional radiation technology safety agenda through the 28th Radiation Protection Conference and Workshop 2025 (RPCW 2025). Themed 'Global Energy Security Through Radiation Safety: Balancing Growth and Protection', the conference underscores radiation safety as a fundamental pillar in ensuring global energy sustainability and resilience. Advertisement Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal stressed that radiation safety is not optional but essential in all nuclear technology applications across the medical, industrial, research and security sectors. 'In today's modern era, the use of radiation sources is unavoidable, whether in medicine, agriculture, industry, research or national security. 'That is why radiation protection must remain central to ensuring these applications are safely regulated without harming people or the environment,' he said when officiating the conference, here, Monday. Yusof admitted public perception of nuclear technology remains one of the major challenges despite its proven benefits. 'Concerns over safety and radiation risks persist. It is our joint responsibility – government, industry, academia and professional bodies – to correct this perception through inclusive, transparent and science-based communication,' he said. The event gathered 120 participants, including industry practitioners, policymakers, academics and technical experts, jointly organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) through the Malaysian Nuclear Agency and the Malaysian Radiation Protection Association (Marpa), with support from the Atomic Energy Department. RPCW 2025 aligns with the 13th Malaysia Plan's (RMK13) focus on high-value industries such as energy and water. With nuclear energy being considered as a clean and safe future energy option, radiation safety remains the nation's top priority. Yusof also urged industries to fully support Radiation Protection Officers (RPOs) and Licence Holders (OBTLs), who play a frontline role in enforcing safety standards. 'They are not only enforcers but leaders in risk management, monitoring and safety culture development within their organisations,' he said, calling for continuous training, adequate resources and proper recognition of their responsibilities. According to the Malaysia Atomic Report 2023, the nation recorded over 31,000 radiation workers and nearly 2,000 active licences without a single radiological incident – a testament to Malaysia's regulatory efficiency and industry professionalism. Radiation workers also contribute economic value, supporting the high-value medical ecosystem and strengthening the oil and gas sector through non-destructive testing (NDT) that ensures quality, reduces accidents and enhances competitiveness. As Asean Chair 2025, Malaysia is committed to advancing regional cooperation in radiation safety, radioactive material management and nuclear emergency preparedness through platforms such as the Asean Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (Aseantom), Asean Nuclear Power Safety Research (NPSR) and Asean Nuclear Leaders for Energy Transition (ANLET).
