Miriam O'Callaghan brushes off 'rubbish' compliment from Brendan Gleeson
Speaking with the iconic actor on the Sunday with Miriam show on RTE Radio One, the seasoned host had her own warm opening remarks rebounded to her but she was quick to 'rubbish' them.
Getting the interview underway, Miriam said: 'But first this morning, actor and national treasure, Brendan Gleeson, is here in studio, morning to you Brendan.' RTE presenter Miriam O'Callaghan had no time for Brendan Gleeson's compliments during a recent radio interview. Pic: Miriam O'Callaghan/X
The veteran actor chuckled and simply replied: 'Bit of a national treasure yourself.'
Miriam instantly responded: 'Yeah, rubbish', as she brushed off the niceties with some sarcastic banter.
However, she then shared her own thoughts on the Gangs of New York and Harry Potter star, showcasing her obvious high regard of the man. Miriam O'Callaghan and Brendan Gleeson. Pic: Miriam O'Callaghan/Instagram
Miriam said: 'It is lovely to see you because even when you came in this morning I noticed you were downstairs chatting to everyone. And I know everyone in Ireland will have their own favourite role from Colm in Banshees, Knuckles McGinty in Paddington 2, The Guard, In Bruges, Mad Eye Moody in Harry Potter, I could go on and on.
'But what always strikes me, and I saw it this morning, is that you return after every role to Dublin, to home, to yourself. You're still the Brendan we all know and love.' Miriam O'Callaghan. Pic: Fran Veale
Brendan told Miriam about how his life has constantly changed as he ages but always makes a point to maintain his 'essentials'.
The 70-year-old expressed strong gratitude to all of the kind-hearted people in his life, while sharing his belief that most individuals are inclined towards goodness. Clinging to this notion has made balancing life 'very easy' for him.
Brendan also made sure to thank Miriam for the opportunity to discuss St Francis Hospice in Dublin, where both of his parents received care.
The Banshees of Inisherin star praised the hospice for being a facility built around kindness. He also mentioned the new 24-bed unit extension which is underway at the facility and the Buy a Brick fundraiser, where virtual bricks can be bought for €25 and personalised.
Brendan said: 'You can put something on it, maybe just the name of somebody you've lost, maybe just a thanks to the staff of the hospice, maybe just something that they said.
'And it's like, here's this social media thing where you get to put something positive and beautiful and give a gift of even just somebody's name.'
The multi award-winning actor is currently busy preparing for his return to the Irish stage with Conor McPherson's 'The Weir' at 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin. The play will run from August 8 to September 6 and also stars Owen McDonnell, Seán McGinley, Kate Phillips and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

RTE star Maura Derrane reveals ‘affordable' product that's a ‘lifesaver' for helping deal with ‘curly hair nightmare'

The Today host has been gracing our screens with her brunette curls for over two decades - and here's how she keeps them in shape. 3 Maura Derrane is renowned for her brunette curls Credit: Social Media Collect 3 Maura showed the struggle she goes through to brush her curls 3 Maura used two affordable products to tame her hair Taking to Instagram, Maura posted a clip of herself struggling to detangle the "multiple" knots in her hair after a shower. The 54-year-old held up the pesky knots to the camera and explained how this is what she deals with every day. Although the TV star usually uses more expensive hair care to tame her mane, this time she opted for a more affordable method. The mum-of-one told followers she was using the Bia Belle brush to comb through her hair and soften the curls. Maura noted that the brush was a "lifesaver" and helped to brush out her knots within 10 to 15 minutes. The brush is currently available on the Bia Belle Beauty website for just €13.99. As for hair product, the popular presenter went for the Garnier Ultimate Blends No Rinse Conditioner. Maura highlighted how the product was the "only thing" that was helping to "move the knots along". The Garnier item can be purchased on Amazon for as little as €8.99. So, for those with similar hair to Maura, make sure to grab yourself a bottle. The Irish host emphasised how she had not brushed her hair out properly in the shower and therefore ended up with "millions of knots". Maura added: "If you have curly hair do not lapse when it comes to getting rid of the knots. "My mother used to suffer trying to get all these knots out when I was in school." The star wrote in her caption: "Curly hair nightmare! knots all over the place. RELATABLE MAUR "I always invest in good hair products, but tonight it was an affordable brand that de-tangled my mane, a leave in conditioner from Garnier and a brilliant brush." Fellow curly-haired fans took to the comments section to react to Maura's hair advice. Molly wrote: "This is me with my curly hair, love this brush too." Celine said: "Oh Maura I'm the same my hair is so curly I do have to clip it up most of the time." Maria added: "I still wake up with knots at back unfortunately." And Lisa gushed: "I have one of them brushes for my little woman, it's a brilliant brush!!"

The Irish version of the smash show will hit screens here on August 31. However, RTE have not disclosed whether The Traitors Ireland will air at 6:30pm - like Dancing With The Stars - or at the later time of 9:25pm after the news. An RTE source told The Irish Sun: 'That scheduling information will be available next week.' Advertisement Excitement increased today as the national broadcaster also released a new promo for the hit show, featuring host Siobhan. The nail-biting reality competition sees a group of strangers arrive at Slane Castle to play the ultimate game of deception, betrayal and trust, all in the hope of winning up to €50,000. But, hidden amongst them are the Traitors, who will attempt to secretly murder a player every night, without getting caught. It's up to the others, the Faithfuls, to try to detect who the Traitors are, and banish them from the game, before they become their next victim. An RTE release added: 'Expect conniving glances over banquet breakfasts, whispers in corridors and enough drama to make even the most loyal viewer question their instincts. As tension rises and alliances crumble, viewers will be left asking: who's lying, who's loyal and who's next?' Advertisement Filming of the reality show took place at Slane Castle earlier this year with the identity of the winner now a closely guarded secret. Owner of Slane Castle, Alex Conyngham - son of the late Henry Mount Charles - has revealed how he and his family lived on the top floor of the castle while below them contestants were being murdered in the nail-biting psychological reality competition. The Traitors shock as surprise winners walk away with £90k cash prize in VERY tense scenes He told us: 'Living on top of a film set is an unusual one, but I grew up with a bit of that because the movie The Great Train Robbery was filmed here with Sean Connery. "But this was a little bit different and more intense but I have to say it that (producer) Darren (Smith) and the whole crew were very respectful to us.' Advertisement OFFER CONSIDERATION Alex revealed he had to give it some serious consideration when Irish TV producers approached him to open up his ancestral home to all the mind games, missions, and unexpected twists for which the hit show is famous. He said: 'I had to look at it (offer) closely as you do with any heritage asset. I was concerned with the impact on the building but once we understood how it would work, we said yes. "The great thing with this castle is we have such an array of different rooms and scenery and I suppose that's what got everyone excited.' 'HE LOVED IT' The son of rock 'n' roll aristocrat Henry Mount Charles, said his dad, who died in June after filming wrapped, was "amused" by goings on in the TV show which sees constant murders, and betrayals. Advertisement Alex said: 'It would take a lot to surprise my dad. He loved the whole thing.' RTE announced that Republic of Telly host Kevin McGahern will host a spin-off show, The Traitors Ireland Uncloaked, in which celebrity guests and players from the game will discuss the latest betrayals, mind games and manipulations. Filmed in RTE Limerick, each episode will feature an exclusive interview with the banished or murdered player. With bonus unseen footage, some will learn the identity of the Traitors for the very first time. 3 The show will air on RTE One later this month Credit: RTE
