Mustang driver pleads not guilty to killing woman in Burlingame crosswalk
(KRON) — A Ford Mustang driver accused of swerving around Burlingame traffic during morning commute and striking and killing a woman in a crosswalk pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run on Tuesday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.
Joel Ordanes Gilongos, a 52-year-old Millbrae resident, was speeding south down El Camino Real in his red Mustang around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, while on his way to work in San Mateo, prosecutors wrote. When Gilongos reached the Trousdale Drive intersection, he flew through his red light and struck 61-year-old Arlene Ocampo, according to the DA's office.
Ocampo was walking inside the crosswalk during the collision, prosecutors wrote. Gilongos 'did not stop and just kept driving to work,' the DA's office wrote. Law enforcement would later take him into custody at his workplace.
The woman, a mother of two daughters, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Ocampo 'dedicated her life to being a caregiver for 30+ years,' a GoFundMe organized by family stated. 'She loved cooking, gardening and attended church every Sunday. If Arlene wasn't spending time with her daughters or at church, she was gallivanting on her own adventure. She is a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend whose presence brought light, warmth, and joy to all who knew her.'
During arraignment in San Mateo County Superior Court on Tuesday, Gilongos pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was released from custody on a $100,000 bail bond.
A preliminary hearing in the case is set for May 22 at 9 a.m.

Woman sentenced for role in burglary ring targeting Portland businesses
PORTLAND, Ore. () — A woman was sentenced to prison on Monday for her role in a burglary ring targeting Portland restaurants, bars, lounges and dispensaries, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office announced. Officials said 27-year-old Courtney Carlile was sentenced to nine years in prison for 13 counts of first-degree burglary and two counts of auto theft – all felony charges. Carlile was also ordered to pay restitution and will be on post-prison supervision for three years after her release from prison, the District Attorney's Office said. Deputy District Attorney Alexander Garcia, who prosecuted the case, said Carlile targeted at least 13 businesses. Portland ICE facility saw increased police presence during weekend protests 'Ms. Carlile's actions have had a significant impact on our community. As this court is well aware, property crime has greatly impacted Portland,' Garcia said. 'It has caused a great number of businesses and people to leave Portland. Our streets are lined with vacant commercial spaces because business owners are not willing to risk opening.' According to Garcia, Carlile is one of roughly 10 people in the burglary ring who has burglarized and stolen from as many as 100 Portland businesses, a majority of which are small businesses. Officials noted Carlile also has open criminal cases in Clackamas and Washington counties on similar charges. ODOT cracks down on 'fatigued, unqualified' commercial truck drivers on I-84 The case dates back to July of 2024, when surveillance video for Baby Dolla Pizza on Southeast Stark Street, showed 33-year-old Josh Lucero — another member of the crime ring — arrive to the restaurant in a white Acura TL, according to court documents. Authorities reported that Lucero used a crowbar and a Sawzall to break into an office inside the shop, noting the damage exceeded $1,000. Later, on September 18, 2024, video showed Lucero and Carlile using bolt cutters to break into Portland restaurant Grassa on Northwest 23rd Avenue, and used a Sawzall to break into a safe, the District Attorney's Office said. That same night, video from Old Town Brewing Co., on 52nd and MLK, showed Lucero and Carlile smash a window to get inside the building and break into the business safe, officials said. This pattern continued through November and December of 2024 until the pair were arrested by Portland police on December 28. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Waymo suspends service in parts of San Francisco amid recent ICE protests
(KRON) — Waymo suspended service in parts of San Francisco on Monday, according to a company spokesperson. Service for the driverless taxi service was halted amid recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests in the city that became violent. The Waymo spokesperson did not specify where in San Francisco service will be suspended. The autonomous vehicle company says it is aware of the potential protests in the city. As a precaution, Waymo is not providing service in those areas. Waymo is in contact with local authorities in San Francisco to determine where it may need to halt service in the city. Another protest against ICE is set to take place in San Francisco Monday evening at the 24th and Mission BART Plaza. On Sunday evening, hundreds gathered outside the ICE building on Sansome Street in the Financial District. More than 150 arrests were made as the rally turned violent, with vandalism committed across the area. Multiple Waymos were vandalized in San Francisco, including one that was spray-painted (see photo below). BART station shuts down, Muni diverted due to SF ICE rally Protests against ICE are at a much larger scale in downtown Los Angeles where Waymo has suspended service in that portion of the city. Waymo received guidance from the Los Angeles Police Department to halt service amid multiple driverless taxis being set on fire and vandalized. One Waymo driverless car is between an estimated $150,000 and $200,000 each, according to a 2024 report by the Wall Street Journal. KRON4 reached out to the Mountain View-headquartered Waymo for information about the suspension of service. We did not hear back in time for this report. KTLA's Iman Palm contributed to this story. Oakland coffee house at center of Star of David hat controversy sued by DOJ
(KRON) — An Oakland coffee house that refused to serve a customer wearing a hat emblazoned with a Star of David last year is being sued by the United States Department of Justice. On Monday, the DOJ announced it had filed a lawsuit against Fathi Abdulrahim Harara and Native Grounds LLC, the owners of the Jerusalem Coffee House on Telegraph Avenue. The lawsuit, according to the DOJ, alleges the coffee house discriminated against Jewish customers, a violation of Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 'which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin in places of public accommodation.' 'It is illegal, intolerable, and reprehensible for any American business open to the public to refuse to serve Jewish customers,' said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division. 'Through our vigorous enforcement of Title II of the Civil Rights Act and other laws prohibiting race and religious discrimination, the Justice Department is committed to combatting anti-Semitism and discrimination and protecting the civil rights of all Americans.' Dozens of arrests after San Francisco protest turns violent Sunday The lawsuit alleges that on two occasions, Harara ordered Jewish customers, who were identified because they were wearing Star of David baseball caps, to leave the business. During one incident, the suit alleges, a Jerusalem Coffee Huse employee told a customer, 'You're the guy with the hat. You're the Jew. You're the Zionist. We don't want you in our coffee shop. Get out.' In another incident cited by the lawsuit, a customer wearing a Star of David hat who was with his 5-year-old son was told to leave repeatedly by Harara, who accused him of supporting 'genocide' and accused of 'trespassing.' That particular incident, which was partially caught on video, was condemned by local leaders including Rep. Ro Khanna and recently elected Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee. The lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, further alleges that on the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks, the coffee house unveiled two new drinks: 'Iced In Tea Fada,' and 'Sweet Sinwar,' a reference to former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. The coffee shop's interior walls, according to the lawsuit, displayed inverted red triangles, 'a symbol of violence against Jews that has been spraypainted on Jewish homes and synagogues in anti-Semitic attacks.'
