PM to visit Cyprus, Croatia during his trip to Canada
NEW DELHI
Reiterating India's traditional foreign policy goals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus and Croatia, official sources said in New Delhi on Monday (June 9, 2025).
Mr. Modi will visit Cyprus on his way to Canada to participate in the G-7 summit (June 15-17), and on the way back, he will pay a visit to Croatia, which will be the first-ever Prime Minister-level visit from the Indian side since the formation of Croatia in 1991 after the dissolution of former Yugoslavia.
Both visits are being described as important from a political as well as a commercial point of view. Sources in New Delhi hinted that the Cyprus visit will serve as a message to Türkiye, which had supplied weapons to Pakistan, which it used during Operation Sindoor in May. It will also act as a timely revival of top-level contacts as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026. Cyprus had condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions.
Cyprus has been consistent in its support of India on the Kashmir issue and cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. That apart, the Mediterranean country, which has a territorial dispute with Ankara regarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has also supported India in its campaign for a permanent seat at the U.N. Security Council, the Nuclear Suppliers Group, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. In a reciprocal gesture, India has supported the resolution of the Cypriot territorial dispute as per UNSC resolutions, international law, and the EU acquis, the collective EU body on laws and regulations.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had visited Cyprus in 1982, while Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited the island nation in 2002. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Nicosia in December 2022, while President Ram Nath Kovind visited in 2018. Officials said Mr. Modi is expected to meet President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides.
Mr. Modi's visit to Croatia is also being described as a tribute to the strong tradition of Indology that exists in the country. The University of Zagreb has been a seat of serious study of Indology, and Croatia is noted for the presence of ISKCON (International Society of Krishna Consciousness).
In recent years, these cultural contacts were supplemented by growing defence and technological relationships. Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić-Radman participated in the Raisina Dialogue in March 2023, when he signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation with Mr. Jaishankar.
Sources said the Croatia visit has additional diplomatic importance as it indicates India's continued commitment to partners of the non-alignment, as the erstwhile Yugoslavia's founding father, Josip Broz Tito, was a Croatian as well.
Officials in New Delhi indicated that both Cyprus and Croatia have acquired growing significance in recent years after the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was launched during the G-20 summit in New Delhi in 2023. Croatia and Cyprus are being viewed here as 'potential participants' and investors in the IMEC-related projects. Croatia, with its extensive maritime facilities and ports on the Adriatic Sea, is attractive for India's commitment to the IMEC, sources said, setting the context of Mr. Modi's upcoming visit.

LOP Suvendu Adhikari has demanded a special session on Murshidabad. Taking a jibe at BJP, Biman said: "They are more comfortable expressing themselves before the media than participating in the House."

Govt. to plant 70 lakh saplings this year: CM Rekha Gupta
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday planted a 'sindoor' sapling at a government school in Shalimar Bagh and said the country's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack was a reflection of our 'national spirit'. She inaugurated the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' campaign at the school in Shalimar Bagh and said that the Delhi government is planning to plant 70 lakh saplings this year. This comes days Ms. Gupta assured her commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental conservation on World Environment Day. 'Our resolve is to make Delhi not just a Capital but a symbol of greenery, cleanliness and compassion. For this purpose, a target of planting 70 lakh saplings has been set this year so that a green and healthy Delhi can be provided to the coming generations,' the CM said in an X post. She said that planting saplings is 'one of the few ways to combat pollution'. She planted a sindoor tree as part of the campaign, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the armed forces for 'ensuring the dignity of our sisters through 'Operation Sindoor''. 'This tree is a symbol of a mother's love and our nation's spirit,' she said.

Army to get new air defence boost with Rs 30,000 crore QR-SAM deal
NEW DELHI: The defence ministry will soon take up the case for a preliminary nod to a Rs 30,000 crore proposal to procure three regiments of the new indigenous quick reaction surface to air missile (QR-SAM) systems for the Army. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Rajnath Singh-led defence acquisitions council will consider granting acceptance of necessity (AoN) for the highly-mobile QR-SAM systems, which are designed to intercept hostile fighters, helicopters and drones at a range up to 25-30 km, later this month. The move comes soon after India's existing multi-layered air defence network played a crucial role in thwarting multiple waves of Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles launched by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor - the May 7-10 hostilities. The and the Army have over the last three-four years tested the QR-SAM systems against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various types of threats to evaluate their capability under different day and night operational scenarios. Defence PSUs Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics will co-produce the QR-SAM systems. "The QR-SAM systems can operate on the move with search and track capability and fire at short halts. They are tailor-made to move along with tanks and infantry combat vehicles to provide them air defence in the tactical battlefield," an official said. The Army Air Defence (AAD), which performed exceedingly well during Operation Sindoor, in fact, requires 11 regiments of the QR-SAM, even as it progressively also inducts regiments of the indigenous Akash system, which has an interception range of about 25-km at present. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The induction of the QR-SAM systems will add to the existing air defence network of the IAF and the Army, which ranges from the long-range Russian S-400 'Triumf' surface-to-air missile systems (380 km interception range) and Barak-8 medium range SAM systems (70 km), jointly developed with Israel, to the Russian shoulder-fired Igla-S missiles (6 km), the upgraded L-70 anti-aircraft guns (3.5 km) and the indigenous integrated drone detection and interdiction systems (1km-2 km). While the DRDO is also readying the very short-range air defence missile systems (VSHORADS), which have a 6 km interception range, the real game-changer will be an air defence system with a 350 km range being developed under the ambitious Project Kusha. India plans to operationally deploy this long-range system by 2028-2029, with the defence ministry in Sept 2023 approving the AoN for procurement of five of its squadrons for the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,700 crore, as was first reported by TOI.
