Include more types of esports in development programmes under Act 576

The Sun06-05-2025
THE Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) recommends that more types of sports, particularly the fast-growing esports, be included in the development programmes under the First Schedule of the Sports Development Act 1997 (Act 576).
Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias said the move would add value to the country's sports ecosystem, thus paving the way for athletes to make a name for themselves in the domestic and international sports scene.
'There are many more sports that can be included in the existing list to pave the way for the younger generation to continue to be involved in healthy activities as well as to highlight their talent and performances through their respective sport.
'This act has undergone several amendments and the list has grown from 39 to 103 types of sports, which are currently undergoing the development process under the ministry's supervision through the Sports Commissioner,' he said.
He told reporters this after officiating the handing over of the Jalur Gemilang to the national digital dodgeball team at Sportizza here today as the team gears up to leave for Shanghai, China on May 21 to compete in the three-day 2025 Hado World Cup from May 23.
Suhardi said that every type of sport recommended will first undergo several review processes and discussions to see if it is suitable to be classified as a sport, particularly those that use digital elements.
He also did not rule out proposals to include esports in the existing act and, instead, recommended that associations or clubs come forward to present the types of sports that they feel should have the support of KBS.
'This initiative aligns with the ministry's efforts through the Sports Commissioner regarding the definition of sports that can be used for esports, which also includes elements of mental, physical and fitness,' he said.
The First Schedule of the Sports Development Act 1997 (Act 576) compiles types of sports for the purpose of guidance and reference on activities considered as sports listed under the amended sports development order.
The 2025 Hado World Cup will be participated by 18 countries, including the United States, Spain, Greece, South Korea and Australia, with Malaysia slated to face nine countries in the group stage.

Beauty queen claims another mountain record

Iron woman: Harveen posing with the Jalur Gemilang at the Everest Base Camp. — Photo taken from Harveen's Instagram KUALA LUMPUR: Mrs Malaysia World 2017 Datin Harveen Kaur has completed back-to-back climbs to the Everest Base Camp and summit of Island Peak in a single Himalayan expedition, earning her a second entry in the Malaysia Book of Records. Sharing the good news, she said she reached the base camp on May 16, before successfully summiting Island Peak, also known as Imja Tse, on May 20. On Aug 7, the Malaysia Book of Records recognised her as the 'First Beauty Queen to Complete Back-to-Back Everest Base Camp and Island Peak' climbs. Everest Base Camp (5,364m) in Nepal's Khumbu region serves as the gateway for climbers attempting to climb Mount Everest. Nearby Island Peak (6,189m), a striking trekking peak accessible from Imja Valley, is a popular challenge for mountaineers and trekkers alike. The latest feat marks Harveen's second record-setting achievement, Bernama reported. In September 2023, she became the 'First Beauty Queen to Summit Mount Kilimanjaro', Africa's highest peak at 5,895m. Her mountaineering journey has also taken her to Mera Peak (6,476m) in Nepal, which she scaled on April 11, 2024. That expedition came at a cost – she lost her left middle finger to frostbite. In the spirit of National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, Harveen urged Malaysians to strive for excellence in all they set out to achieve. 'Let's make our nation stand out in the world by scaling new heights in our pursuits,' she said.

Pushing for e-sports in schools

Mohd Najwan says no final decision has been made regarding Sukma e-sports venue. E-SPORTS may soon be an extracurricular option for students in Selangor, says state youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi. He said discussions were underway with the National Sports Council and Youth and Sports Ministry to include e-sports as a core sport in the Malaysia Games (Sukma). 'Currently, e-sports is classified as an optional sport in Sukma Selangor 2026. It was introduced at Sukma Sarawak last year,' he said. He added that the state was collaborating with the Education Ministry to introduce e-sports into school-level competitions under the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) framework. 'Currently, there are no official regulations for incorporating e-sports into schools as part of co-curricular activities. 'That is why we are pushing the two ministries to act,' he said at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) silver jubilee celebration at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam. To foster talent at the grassroots level, Mohd Najwan said Selangor recently hosted the Selangor Future Cup, a state-organised e-sports tournament in February which welcomed over 60 secondary schools across the state. The tournament was aimed at identifying and nurturing emerging talent that can eventually join the Selangor Red Giants, the state's e-sports team. On the project to convert the former Carlton Hotel in Section 13, Shah Alam into an e-sports hub for Sukma, Mohd Najwan said it was delayed due to unresolved administrative and ownership issues with the hotel's previous operator. He added that no final decision has been made regarding the Sukma e-sports venue. 'However, state officials are exploring options such as convention centres in Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya.'
