KUCHING (Aug 9): The Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) will be launched during the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability's Public-Industry Engagement Day at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching this Monday (Aug 11).
The ministry in a statement said the policy outlines the Sarawak government's comprehensive strategies for transitioning towards a cleaner, more resilient and inclusive energy landscape.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the launching ceremony.
'SET-P, among others, serves as the key opportunity to explore potential investments for businesses or collaboration.
'This inaugural event aims to raise public and industry awareness and foster meaningful dialogues with relevant stakeholders on the Sarawak government's policies related to energy and sustainability,' it said.
The policies are Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint (SSB), Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER) and Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P).
Interactive engagement sessions will provide stakeholders with the opportunity to gain key insights into these forward-looking policies, with emphasis on how they impact and involve industry players, community members, and civil society.
The ministry added that it will provide further information and policy developments after the event to ensure continued awareness and alignment with Sarawak's energy transition agenda. Abang Johari Kuching Sarawak Energy Transition Policy

Premier: Sarawak mulls blended finance facility to fund energy transition

He said this would enhance the bankability of these projects and unlock broader participation from the private sector and development banks. 'Let me be clear — realising this vision will require deep collaboration. We call upon development partners, private investors and financial institutions to join us in shaping a resilient, inclusive and investable energy transition for Sarawak,' he said. He said this during the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability's Public Industry Engagement Day and the launching ceremony of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here yesterday. Abang Johari said that to fully unlock SET-P's potential, Sarawak needed to first strengthen its short-term investment landscape. 'Energy transition opportunities in Sarawak can be broadly categorised into three categories.. 'Firstly, commercially-viable projects with market-rate returns include utility-scale solar, hydropower, grid modernisation and much of our natural gas infrastructure. These investments are generally bankable and capable of attracting private capital without significant intervention,' he said. He said the second category were public-good initiatives with no direct financial returns, which includes critical enablers such as workforce upskilling, public awareness programmes and sustainable urban transport systems. 'While they do not yield commercial returns, they are foundational to ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition,' he added. Abang Johari said the third category was emerging solutions with below-market returns, which encompass 'nascent but strategically vital technologies' such as clean hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), energy efficiency and low-carbon transport. 'Despite their long-term potential, these initiatives currently struggle to attract private financing due to higher risk profiles and uncertain returns, particularly in emerging markets such as Sarawak,' said Abang Johari. He said today's event was a critical step in fostering the collective ownership and shared responsibility needed for effective implementation. 'By working together, we can develop the enabling infrastructure, drive innovation through research and development and cultivate a highly skilled green workforce prepared to lead Sarawak into a resilient, low-carbon energy future,' he said. Also present were State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; and Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni. Bintulu Port signs MoUs to advance Sarawak's clean energy goals

KUCHING: Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with international firms to accelerate Sarawak's clean energy transition. The agreements were formalised during the launch of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. BPHB board member Datuk Seri Fong Joo Chung represented the port, while partners included Sakura Ferroalloys, Borneo Biogas, and Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co. Ltd. The first MoU with Sakura Ferroalloys focuses on decarbonisation efforts, including bioethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development. This aligns with Sarawak's Net Zero Strategy 2050 and global environmental policies like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The second MoU involves Borneo Biogas, which specialises in biomethane and Bio-LNG from palm oil and agricultural waste. The partnership will assess the viability of Bio-LNG production and bunkering infrastructure in Sarawak. The third MoU, with China's Guofuhee, targets the development of a liquid hydrogen facility at Bintulu Port. This initiative aims to position the port as a hub for hydrogen logistics and exports. The agreement also supports local hydrogen demand for industries and transport, including hydrogen-powered vessels. Feasibility studies and technical discussions will guide the implementation of these projects.

Sarawak to form state energy council for sustainable growth by 2026

KUCHING: Sarawak will establish a State Energy Council by 2026 to streamline energy policies across public and private sectors, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced. The council will coordinate strategies among energy players to support the state's development goals after consultations with stakeholders. 'This is part of our broader effort under the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P). We're engaging with the private sector so both public and private entities move forward together,' he said. Abang Johari revealed Sarawak aims to attract RM700 billion in investments over the next decade through SET-P, focusing on low-carbon growth and renewable energy. 'We are fortunate to have the capacity to generate renewable energy and are already seeing strong global interest, especially in our hydroelectric power potential,' he added. The policy targets high-quality job creation, with the state offering free tertiary education to prepare a skilled workforce for the green economy. SET-P outlines seven strategic pillars, including renewable energy, hydrogen development, and carbon capture, to transform Sarawak's energy landscape. It also addresses the energy trilemma by balancing security, affordability, and sustainability for a resilient future. - Bernama
