Now the former world number one is set to become the oldest singles player to compete at Flushing Meadows since Renee Richards, aged 47 in 1981.
It will be Williams' 25th appearance at the New York major, 25 years after she first won it in 2000.
She is also on the entry list for the new-look mixed doubles event alongside another American, Reilly Opelka.
Williams' sister Serena, who won six US Opens among her 23 grand slam titles, retired after the tournament in 2022.

Question mark against Jacob's US Open participation
A question mark has been placed against the participation of Edinburgh tennis ace Jacob Fearnley in this year's US Open which gets underway at Flushing Meadow, New York, next week. The 24-year-old US based player dropped down to a challenger event in South Carolina this week following three first round exits on the premier ATP tour. He looked well placed to advance to the second round in straight sets against Australia's James McCabe in the First Serve Open when serving for the match when suddenly he squatted on the baseline in apparent distress. It was not clear if it was a heat issue or an injury as Jacob seemed ill-at-ease on his feet with an apparent limp. Unable to serve out successfully he surrendered the set 7-5 a few minutes later and immediately retired. One observer claims to have heard the umpire refer to the heat and the absence of a screening umbrella at Jacob's end of the court had earlier been mentioned. If Jacob has to withdraw – his top 60 ranking made him an automatic entry – it will be the second year in succession he has suffered US Open disappointment. Required to qualify in 2024 he failed to make the main draw after appearing to be hampered by a serious wrist injury which his opponent was able to capitalise upon. The Fearnley camp have been approached for comment. Like this: Like Related
