Massachusetts man pleads guilty after attempting to stab flight attendant on flight to Boston

Francisco Severo Torres, 34, of Leominster, was arrested at Logan International Airport in Boston on March 6, 2023 after he allegedly tried to open an emergency exit door during a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston, and when confronted, allegedly tried to stab a flight attendant.
Prosecutors say that about 45 minutes before landing, the flight crew was notified by an alarm in the cockpit that a side door between the first class and coach sections had been disarmed. A flight attendant found that the door's locking handle had been moved out of the fully locked position and into the 'disarmed' position and notified the captain and other flight crew.
Another flight attendant said they saw Torres near the door and believed he had moved the door handle. Torres was approached about tampering with the door, and he allegedly asked if there were cameras proving their claim. According to court documents, the flight attendant then notified the captain that they believed Torres was a threat and that the plane should be landed as soon as possible.
Witnesses say that Torres got out of his seat again and approached the two flight attendants who were standing near the door. Video taken by a passenger allegedly shows Torres yelling that he would 'kill every man on this plane' and 'I'm taking over this plane.' He then allegedly moved toward one of the flight attendants in a stabbing motion with a broken metal spoon, hitting the flight attendant on the neck area three times. Several passengers apprehended Torres and helped the crew keep him restrained until landing. Torres was taken into custody after the plane landed. The attendant was not injured.
Torres pleaded guilty to one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 17th. The charge of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon is a sentence of up to life in prison, up to five years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.

New Hampshire police officer facing new child pornography charge
A Massachusetts man who works as a police officer in New Hampshire now faces a federal child pornography charge, months after his initial arrest, authorities announced Thursday. Seabrook Police Officer John Giarrusso, a 49-year-old resident of Haverhill, is slated to face a judge in federal court in Boston after he was rearrested on Thursday morning and charged with one count of receipt of child pornography, according to United States Attorney for Massachusetts Leah B. Foley. According to the charging documents cited by Foley's office, Giarrusso knowingly received video files depicting child sexual abuse on Kik in October 2024. Federal prosecutors allege that the victims in the videos appeared to be between 5 and 11 years of age. The Essex District Attorney's Office initially charged Giarrusso with possession of child pornography and distribution of graphic sexual images to a minor. Giarrusso was arraigned on those charges in March. He later posted $100,000 bail. The Seabrook Police Department says Giarrusso was placed on administrative leave after they learned of his arrest. No bail for man accused of killing woman in Boston street, family says she didn't know him
The man accused of shooting two people in the middle of the day in Boston Wednesday, killing one of them, is now being held without bail. Jonathan Hernandez, 41, of Hyde Park, hid behind a door during his arraignment Thursday morning in West Roxbury District Court. He pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder. Police said Hernandez shot a man and woman multiple times in the middle of Faraday Street in Hyde Park around 10 a.m. Wednesday. A woman who lives on the street told WBZ-TV she heard five gunshots. Wendy Nunez Calderon died about an hour after the shooting, investigators said. The man who was shot, Yonny Peguero German, was in stable condition in a hospital Thursday, according to prosecutors. Public records show someone with the same name as Hernandez owns a home near the shooting scene. Police were seen at the house after the attack Wednesday. There's no word yet on a motive, but Boston City Councilor Enrique Pepen said it was a targeted shooting. However, Calderon's family said Thursday she did not know Hernandez. After his arraignment, Calderon's family described her as a ray of sunshine who made friends with everyone she met. One relative told WBZ Calderon was "very caring for people and all she did was help out." When asked to describe her in one word, he said, "Amazing." Hernandez was ordered held without bail. He's due back in court September 23 for a probable cause hearing.

Natick MA roofer pleaded guilty to tax evasion. Here's what the judge decided
A federal judge in Boston has sentenced a Natick roofer to one year in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to tax evasion. U.S. District Court Judge Brian E. Murphy on Tuesday, Aug. 12, also sentenced Jake Miller, 42, to one year of supervised release. Murphy also ordered Miller to pay $449,329 in restitution. Miller pleaded guilty in February to one count of tax evasion. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Miller owned Kostas Roofing, which he ran under an alias of Paul Kostas. From 2013 to 2021, Miller deposited money earned from his roofing business into a personal bank account rather than a business account. He did not file income taxes during those years, despite receiving at least $1.6 million. The U.S. Attorney's Office determined Miller should have paid nearly $450,000 in taxes as a result of that unreported income.
