It remains to be seen whether or not he will be joined by his former teammate in Glasgow.

Russell Martin's vital Rangers transfer that has already been made as 'responsibility' falls on one new recruit
The window has already been jam-packed for the Light Blues - and a key man is in the dressing room Simmer recruit Joe Rothwell senses he has a special role in the Rangers' revolution under Russell Martin. It has been a whirlwind summer for the Ibrox diehards as they watched Andrew Cavenagh and 49er Enterprises usher in a new era for the club. Just 52 days after the contracts were finally rubber stamped on the takeover, there is a new manager, seven new signings and competitive football is back for Rangers. The 30-year-old was one of four recruits to be thrown straight into the mix against in the Champions League against Panathinaikos alongside Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga and goalscorer Djeidi Gassama. Another winger appears to be on the shopping list after a bid for Crystal Palace forward Jesurun Rak-Sakyi as Martin looks to get his squad ready for a title tilt and bring trophies back to the empty Ibrox cabinet. But with the wheels still turning on deals behind the scenes, Rothwell knows the vital piece of the puzzle he can fulfil. He said: 'I think obviously the manager brought me in to try and help with the way he wants to do things. "I think, obviously playing under him for only a short period of time, but like I say, he wanted me to come in and try and help, especially the younger lads and show them how he wants to do things. 'Obviously, being one of the elder lads and you want to take responsibility on your shoulders and drive forward and that's what I like to do." Martin faced some early question marks over his vision for the club as the Light Blues endured a first half onslaught from the Greek side. But Rothwell revealed that a simple reminder from the boss emphasised the importance of the game plan - before securing two vital goals Gers can take to Athens on Tuesday. "Just kind of stick to what we do. "We went away from a little bit, in terms of how we want to play and, like I say, first 10, 15, I think we started the game really well and then probably come away from it a little bit. "We gave away sloppy passes, and just get back on the train, like I said, in the second half. "I thought we did that and then obviously with them going down to 10 men, we've managed to control the game and probably disappointed we didn't probably get a few more in the end, but we can't complain, it's a win and it takes us into, a lead over there. " Outside of the transfer market, 18-year-old Findlay Curtis has emerged as the wildcard of the new-look Gers' side. And the former Bournemouth and Blackburn midfielder reckons that his teammates now play a key role in his development. 'I've been really impressed by him, to be fair. "Even in the Brugge game, when he played 90, I think he got man of the match as well, so back-to-back man of the matches, a goal on your debut. You can't ask much more. "It's up to us and himself to keep himself on the ground and keep himself grounded and I'm sure we'll do that, but he's got a bright future ahead of him." It was Rothwell's first taste of the sold-out Ibrox crowd - and now he hopes to finish the job and set up a clash with Viktoria Plzen or Servette in the next round. 'Obviously you hear stories from the outside, but when you actually get out there and experience it, it's fantastic and, I'm sure the fans are going to be behind us in every single game and we'll need them. "There'll be times where it might be a bit tough for us, but I'm sure they'll get behind us and then get us over the finish line. "Obviously, 2-0, it's a good score line, especially in this format. "So, we'll obviously go out there and obviously we won't be looking to defend it. "We'll try and go out there and win the game and score as many goals as we can."

How will Rangers approach second leg?
Joe Rothwell insists Rangers will head to Athens with a front-foot approach and "won't be looking to defend" their former Bournemouth midfielder made his debut in the 2-0 first-leg win in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday night as the Russell Martin era began with struggled for long spells before 18-year-old Findlay Curtis and debutant Djeidi Gassama struck fine second-half goals after side of Greek defender Giorgos Vagiannidis' red Ibrox side host Middlesbrough in a friendly on Saturday before the second leg against Panathinaikos in the Greek capital on Wednesday."I think we have to now [feel in command of the tie]" Rothwell, 30, said. "Obviously, 2-0, it's a good scoreline, especially in this format."So we'll go out there and obviously we won't be looking to defend it. We'll try and go out there and win the game and score as many goals as we can."It [2-0 win] can be huge. I think he [Martin] said in his press conference, it was not going to be a season-defining game but we wanted to go out there and put a show on and really show how he wants to do things."I think we managed to do that, controlled the game as we like to do and just a bit disappointed that we didn't go and probably kill the game off a little bit more."Rangers should have been behind before Curtis' 52nd-minute opener, with Martin having to settle his new team down at the interval to spark an improved performance."He said to just stick to what we do," Rothwell added. "We went away from it a little bit, in terms of how we want to play."And then obviously with them going down to 10 men, we've managed to control the game and probably disappointed we didn't probably get a few more in the end."Rothwell "loved" his first experience of a European night at Ibrox."Obviously you hear stories from the outside, but when you actually get out there and experience it, it's fantastic and I'm sure the fans are going to be behind us in every single game and we'll need them."
