Kelly Schweida aiming filly El Morzillo at Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap

News.com.au29-04-2025
Kelly Schweida collected a $1m race in Melbourne with his grey flash El Morzillo, but now he has something more prestigious in mind.
The Group 1 $3m Stradbroke Handicap.
El Morzillo will attempt to walk in the hoofprints of another three-year-old filly Stefi Magnetica, who won the 2024 Stradbroke with a feather weight.
The problem will be getting El Morzillo to qualify for the Stradbroke in June.
With a rating of 90, the fast-finishing filly needs a ratings bump or to score a 'win-and-you're in' race such as the Fred Best Classic to surge into the Stradbroke.
El Morzillo is set to resume in the winter carnival pipe-opener Group 2 Victory Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
'You've got to aim high and she would have to qualify to get in, but I think the Stradbroke is a race that really suits a three-year-old filly like her,' multiple Group 1-winning Eagle Farm trainer Schweida said.
'Who knows what is coming for the Straddy, they just seem to jumpout of the woodwork?
'But the Straddy is the type of race where they generally run along at a good tempo and that would really suit her.
'I think she is better ridden back in the field and unleashed late with her good turn of foot.
'When she won at Flemington last start, she was 15th at the 400m mark.'

El Morzillo has competed at a high level for virtually her entire 12-start career.
She is familiar with winter carnival competition, having finished fourth behind Broadsiding in last year's Group 1 JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm.
At her last start, she flew home like she was shot out of a gun to score the $1m Inglis Sprint at Flemington.
Before that, she was fifth in the $3m Sunlight slot race on the Sunshine Coast in January.
That has proved a hot form race with Sunlight winner Private Harry subsequently scoring the Group 1 The Galaxy in Sydney.
Others who ran behind Private Harry on the Sunshine Coast have since produced eye-catching wins.
• Dethroned Quokka champion set for Doomben 10,000
'When she won that million-dollar race in Melbourne, I guess you could say it was just a restricted race,' Schweida said.
'But her form before that was very good.'
Another Schweida youngster, two-year-old colt Grafterburners, will have a part to play in the winter carnival.
Grafterburners, last seen winning the $500,000 QTIS Jewel (2YO) on the Gold Coast, is likely to resume in the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 17.
Could he be a contender for the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on Stradbroke day?
'Firstly, we will have to see whether he runs 1400m which I think he will,' Schweida said.
'To get to 1600m, you first need to run 1400m and if you can't run that, you can't run 1600m.'

2025 The Rosebud: Michael Freedman to saddle up Pallaton

Exciting colt Pallaton could thrust himself straight into the Group 1 frame with a statement performance in Saturday's Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. Trainer Michael Freedman is ready to set the bar high with his smart son of Wootton Bassett but will first need to see him back to his best in the first Sydney stakes race of the season. Pallaton was restricted to just three starts during his juvenile season but showed more than enough to suggest he is a colt with plenty of talent. The lightly-raced three-year-old was a dominant winner on debut at Royal Randwick last December in a performance that put him high in contention for the Golden Slipper. But Pallaton never made Australia's coveted two-year-old showpiece after falling flat in two autumn runs. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Freedman is confident he's put the issue behind him as he prepares to unleash the colt in the spring. 'He had his Golden Slipper curtailed when he got a bit of a throat infection after his second run and when he got to the third run he was over the top and overraced badly, showing signs of a two-year-old that wasn't ready to go on with it,' Freedman said. 'He had a nice long break and a nice steady build up. 'The two trials I've been happy so hopefully we can see him show a bit of what we saw on his first start.' • Rosehill Turf Talk: Cohen keen on $5 best bet as O'Cass spruiks $17 pop Odds makers have installed Pallaton as a $2.40 favourite in his return with Tommy Berry booked to ride. A Group 1 date could follow his first-up assignment with Group 1 $750,000 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley on September 6 a potential target. 'I want to see what unfolds on Saturday and work it out from there but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a Moir if he shaped that way because he is quite a powerfully built sprinting type,' Freedman said. 'I think Saturday will give us a better indication of what path we want to go down with him. 'I am certainly not ruling out the Golden Rose as a possibility and am just keeping a lot of options open for him at the moment.' • Shayne O'Cass's race-by-race tips and analysis for Rosehill Garfdens on Saturday Freedman could already have a three-year-old winner on the program by the time Pallaton goes around with promising stablemate Ninja ($1.95 favourite) set to come to town for the Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m). Ninja broke his maiden in the most memorable performance, scoring eye-catching style with an 11-1/4 length romp at Kembla Grange. Freedman is wary of overplaying the victory but believes Ninja is a nice horse in the making. 'It was a four horse field on a bog track so I don't think the margin is that significant,' he said. 'He is a nice progressive type and will definitely handle the conditions. 'It is a big jump from a maiden to a Saturday in town but he is still a work in progress. 'I think he is mentally immature at the moment but heading the right way.' Trainer Michael Freedman (right) with jockey Tommy Berry. Polyglot is another exciting galloper that could be himself in the frame for better races in the spring when he returns in the TAB Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m). It will be Freedman's second Godolphin runner following the success of Ohope at Hawkesbury during the week. Polyglot, a $5 favourite, had trialled up well in the lead up but James McDonald has been set a task with a tricky draw from barrier 12. • Flindell opens up on missile terror and 'worst nightmare' 'I am really happy with Polyglot,' Freedman said. 'He had two nice trials and is obviously familiar with the course and distance but the big concern will be the barrier in terms of where he might get to from the draw. 'I will have a chat to James and see where we think we can get to but he's in good order, just would have liked a softer draw.' Bunker Hut ($8) could complete a big day for Freedman when the gelding lines up in the Petaluma Benchmark 94 Handicap (1200m).

Yellow Sam changes ownership for $305k before Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield

A PB Lawrence Stakes runner will have a new owner for Saturday's Group 2 contest at Caulfield. Smart mare Yellow Sam, the winner of eight of 19 starts, was sold for $305,000 via an Inglis online auction earlier this week. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Yellow Sam attracted the hefty price as a racing and breeding proposition partly because of her win in the Group 3 Vamos Stakes at Hobart in February last year. The six-year-old also finished third at her last appearance in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on July 26. The purchaser, Dodmark Thoroughbreds, indicated the six-year-old would remain in the care of trainer Lindsey Smith. Yellow Sam has been specked from $21 to $17 in PB Lawrence Stakes betting. Yellow Sam fetched the second highest price in the online sale behind speedy mare Cleo Cat, who fetched $355,000. Leviathan owners Yulong, bidding under the name Walnut Farm, bought the Tom Dabernig-trained Cleo Cat, who is spelling after her last-start fourth in the Group 3 Monash Stakes at Caulfield on July 12. Victorian breeder Burnewang North Pastoral pair $255,000 for Group 2 winner Caste. • Brad Waters' Caulfield Saturday tips, race-by-race analysis Caste won the Group 2 Queen of the South Stakes in South Australia in 2023 but has not raced since finishing fifth in the Listed Seymour Cup last October. Cranbourne trainer Gavin Bedggood, known for resurrecting tried horses, paid $75,000 for the former Lloyd Williams-owned import Fisherman's Beach. Fisherman's Beach finished eighth at The Valley last Saturday. The Williams family also sold the former Joseph O'Brien-trained import Rosso for $45,000. Horse Racing Queensland Oaks runner-up Our Gold Hope will make her return at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday as trainer Luke Price sets ambitious goals for the daughter of Lope De Vega. Horse Racing Apprentice Siena Grima was shocked to learn Chris Waller and Darren Beadman knew who she was but she was quick to leave a lasting impression on the Hall Of Fame duo.
