Cautious sentiments pull brakes on car sales in Gujarat

Time of India05-05-2025

Ahmedabad: The automotive sector in Gujarat demonstrated a modest recovery in April, with sales increasing by 4.7%, reaching 27,326 units compared to 26,105 units in April 2024. However, the overall market outlook remains conservative, primarily affected by stock market challenges and decreased rural consumption.
Statistics from the union ministry of road transport and highways reveal a cautious consumer behaviour pattern. Despite the slight increase in car sales, two-wheeler purchases decreased by 1.5% compared to the previous year in Gujarat, indicating a broader deceleration in vehicle purchases. Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) — Gujarat representatives stressed the importance of economic stability for rebuilding consumer trust.

"The new financial year began on a modest note as overall retails in April managed to grow by 3% year-on-year across India. As the tariff war paused, stock markets showed a good pullback, putting investor concerns to rest at least for the time being. Thus, the Chaitra Navratri, Akshay Tritiya muhurats drove sales," stated FADA officials.

"This performance reflects a discount-led market and elevated inventories — approximately a 50-day supply — amid cautious consumer sentiment that tempered enquiry-to-sale conversions. Sustained SUV demand underpinned volumes even as entry-level customers remained cautious," said Pranav Shah, chairperson, FADA — Gujarat.
"Two-wheeler costs went up in the recent past and therefore, customers are not able to accept the new prices and as a result, demand is muted. Rural demand continues to remain weak for two-wheelers as well as four-wheelers mainly due to subdued earnings," Shah explained.
Industry analysts suggest that passenger vehicle sales will remain stable but subdued, as consumers await new models and deal with high financing rates. A senior road transport office (RTO) official noted that prospective four-wheeler buyers were anticipating budget incentives, and following announcements by the Gujarat govt, electric vehicle buyers were holding off.
Despite recent improvements, the stock market volatility has contributed to the situation. "Many buyers, particularly in urban areas, rely on their stock market investments to fund large-ticket purchases, including cars. With the market in a downturn, many potential buyers have postponed their vehicle purchases because many were clearly dependent on market returns for down payments to avoid paying loans," said a city-based car dealer.
Industry specialists indicate that car sales might not show consistent growth in upcoming months without improved economic conditions.

Shop owners take over Pedestrian Plaza; Police, GCC turn a blind eye

Chennai: Touted and unveiled as a show-piece 'smart' civic amenity, the 40-crore Pedestrian Plaza in T Nagar is now a chaotic free-for-all zone. Shop owners, in collusion with traffic police and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) personnel, have taken over the concrete pavements and installed makeshift stands to display their wares. The remaining space is occupied by their vehicles, throughout the day. When contacted, assistant engineer of ward 133, Anand, said the civic body had written to R1 and R4 police stations seeking support for towing the illegally parked vehicles. "They have agreed to provide support by Wednesday," he said. A police station located just a stone's throw away from the stretch has turned a blind eye to the encroachments. However, West Mambalam traffic enforcement wing inspector Sai Shameema said, "We are evacuating the vehicles parked illegally on Pedestrian Plaza, as and when we receive any specific complaints or during patrolling." But the officials are silent about the chaos on the pavement. Shop owners are the biggest culprits, as they occupy much of the paved walkway and then engage men to canvass among the pedestrians. The street furniture placed on the walkway has been flicked by shops according to their convenience. Push carts, semi-permanent structures selling eatables, construction materials, broken granites and open pits make it hazardous for young and old. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fastest Selling Plots of Mysore from 40L | 40+ Amenities PurpleBrick Learn More Undo It is dirty, noisy. Two-wheelers routinely mount the 15-metre-wide plaza, ride through it, and park haphazardly, reducing pedestrian space to barely three-four metres. The bollards that were meant to block vehicle entry were knocked over in several spots. Inaugurated in 2019 by GCC, the 700-metre stretch (1.4 km both ways) originally promised a seamless, vehicle-free walking experience. Today, it's anything but that. "There's a multi-level parking facility that can hold 100 cars and 200 bikes, but it has less than 10% occupancy every day. Neither police nor the GCC books people who park on the road. If they take action, people will start using the Multi-Level Parking (MLP) facility," said R Avinash, a resident. He added that cops must ban on-street parking on the entire stretch. Muradpur's Solar-Powered Lift Irrigation Scheme Promises Lifeline to Farmers

Nagpur: Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday inaugurated the Muradpur lift irrigation scheme powered by floating solar panels, calling it a 'boon for farmers' that will not only improve agriculture but also uplift rural livelihoods in the region. The scheme, implemented at the Vadgaon reservoir on the Vena River in Umred taluka, aims to provide year-round water supply to over 465 acres of farmland using solar energy. Floating solar panels installed in the Rama Dam reservoir will generate enough electricity to power the entire irrigation system, drastically cutting energy costs and enhancing sustainability. Speaking at the inauguration, Gadkari said, "Water is the most critical need for our farmers. Regular supply will not only help in agriculture but also resolve many village-level problems. This solar-powered lift irrigation scheme will enable farmers to take up two to three crops annually and increase their income." The project is particularly significant for the local population, 53% of whom belong to tribal communities. Gadkari noted the region's social, educational, and economic backwardness, stating that the govt is working with the spirit of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay's Antyodaya philosophy to uplift the last person in society. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The event was attended by MP Shyamkumar Barve, MLA Sanjay Meshram, former MLA Sudhir Parwe, local Sarpanch Durga Alam, Deputy Sarpanch Gajanan Gadge, and other dignitaries. Highlighting the scheme's technical details, officials explained that water from the Vadgaon dam is lifted using pumps and transported through MS pipelines to two delivery chambers. From there, 20 HP pumps distribute water to farmlands through drip irrigation. Floating solar panels with a 270 KVA capacity are expected to generate 1,080 units of electricity daily, sufficient to operate all project-related electrical systems without cost. Gadkari urged farmers to form Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) to maximise the benefits of the scheme. "With modern practices like drone-based spraying and shared machinery, farmers can save Rs 5,000–Rs 6,000 per acre. Technology will boost both yield and profitability," he said. He also announced plans to build a 'Smart Village' nearby, spread over 10 acres with an investment of Rs 100 crore. The project will include 1,000 homes (450 sqft each), concrete roads, and assured lifelong water and electricity, along with a playground and garden. "Around 400 people have already registered for homes," he informed. With sustainable energy, efficient water management, and community-focused development, the Muradpur lift irrigation scheme is expected to set a benchmark in rural transformation through green technology. AU to double intake for BE civil engg (Tamil)

Chennai: Anna University is planning to increase intake in BE civil engineering (Tamil medium) offered at College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) from 30 seats to 60 seats from the 2025-26 academic year. On a pilot basis, the state govt launched two Tamil medium engineering programmes in civil and mechanical engineering at CEG in 2010. These Tamil medium courses have been attracting top rankers as they provide an opportunity to study engineering on one of the premier campuses. The cut-off for Tamil medium course was around 186 out of 200 marks. "We are planning to expand our civil engineering programmes. As a first step, we are increasing intake in Tamil medium course this year," said professor S Kanmani, head, department of civil engineering, CEG. Students will study the course in Tamil and can write the exam in Tamil or English. Professors said many graduates from the Tamil medium course got jobs in public works department (PWD) due to the reservation for Tamil medium students. There was a court ruling that only those who studied from Class VI could avail of this reservation. Now, it is settled that studying a Tamil medium engineering course is enough to avail of this reservation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo The department is planning to increase its intake in the civil engineering English medium course in the next academic year.
