Brahmin community protests in Kalaburagi over removal of students' sacred thread at NEET exam centre

This incident comes close on the heels of a similar one during the Common Entrance Test held for engineering and other vocational courses on April 16, where the sacred threads of Brahmin boys were also removed.
Following the incident, the State Government initiated action against the officials involved, including registration of a case. It also issued directions to prevent such occurrences in the future.
However, on Sunday (May 4, 2025), the Brahmin candidates were either asked to remove the sacred thread or had it cut before entering the exam hall.
Enraged over this, hundreds of community members gathered outside the NEET exam centre, raised slogans and staged a sit-in demonstration.
Protesters accused the government of 'failing' to enforce its own instructions and repeatedly humiliating the community.

"Draconian Act": Congress Slams Centre Over Constitution Amendment Bill
New Delhi: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday criticised the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill that sought to allow the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they were held on serious criminal charges. The Congress leader accused the ruling BJP of using its majority in Parliament to push through the bill with the intention of targeting the opposition. He called the move "draconian" and politically motivated. The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days. Speaking to ANI, the Congress leader called the bill a political weapon and said, "The intention of the ruling side to pass this bill using its majority is not right. This will be used as a tool to target the opposition. This is a draconian act." He further questioned the timing of the bill, linking it to ongoing debates over the allegation on the Election Commission of 'vote theft'. "At a time when questions are rising against the Election Commission, there is panic in the ruling party, and this issue has now been raised to divert attention from it?" Adhir Ranjan told ANI. Earlier in the day, slamming the BJP government over the introduction of the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that legislation, if passed, will allow the ruling party at the Centre to register false cases against Chief Ministers of the opposition parties and it will shake the democratic foundations of the country. Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this expose. Expressing faith in the judiciary, CM Stalin said that the Constitution Amendment bill will be struck down by the courts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. He also proposed sending the bllls to a joint committee of Parliament.

76 killed in major highway crash in Afghanistan, 17 children among victims
Herat [Afghanistan], August 21 (ANI): At least 76 people, including 17 children, lost their lives in a devastating traffic accident in Herat province, making it one of the deadliest road tragedies in Afghanistan in recent years, Khaama Press reported. The incident took place on the Herat ring road in Guzara district when a passenger vehicle carrying Afghan migrants returning from Iran collided with a cargo truck and a motorcycle, officials confirmed. The crash triggered a massive fire that quickly engulfed the passenger Press, citing Taliban-controlled Radio Television Afghanistan, reported that three people were injured in the accident. Local authorities stated that seventeen children were among those who perished in the flames. Eyewitnesses recounted that the fire consumed the vehicle within minutes, severely hampering rescue operations. Efforts to recover bodies were hindered as the flames spread rapidly, Khaama Press reported. Officials noted that the majority of the victims were migrants who had recently crossed back into Afghanistan from Iran in hopes of restarting their tragedy adds to a series of deadly road incidents in Afghanistan. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann hands over 271 appointment letters
Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday handed over appointment letters to 271 new recruits in various govt departments. During the event, Mann claimed that his govt provided over 55,000 jobs to the state's youth in its three years in power. Mann said that these jobs were given to deserving youth based on their merit. He emphasized that all recruitments had been made through a completely transparent process. The chief minister urged the new recruits to serve the people with dedication and to work for the welfare of all sections of society.
