
The Sports Bra, West Coast sports bar known for showing only women's sports, coming to Indy
A West Coast-based sports bar is branching out to Indianapolis, and Hoosiers largely have the Indiana Fever to thank.
The Sports Bra, a Portland, Oregon-based sports bar known for exclusively showing women's sports on its TVs, announced in a press release June 3 that it will be opening franchise locations in Indianapolis, Boston, Las Vegas and St. Louis.
In the news release, Sports Bra founder and CEO Jenny Nguyen said the four cities' professional women's sports teams and fan bases made them attractive destinations for franchises, forming a "starting five" with the brand's Portland eatery, which opened in 2022.
"Together, we're serving fans nationwide who are hungry for spaces that not only champion women's sports, but create a community where everyone feels like they belong," Nguyen said. "There is no better moment than this to open these places."
The release did not specify a location for an Indianapolis Sports Bra nor a timeline for opening.
Indianapolis found itself at the center of the women sports world last year after the Fever used the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft to select Caitlin Clark, a sharpshooting phenom from Iowa whose ascent to superstardom has coincided with massive jumps in women's sports viewership, revenues and financial investment.
The Sports Bra has ridden that wave to expansion; since opening in 2022, the brand has received investments from the 776 Foundation, a fellowship program started by tech entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who is also the husband of tennis legend Serena Williams.
Hoosiers can expect familiar sports bar fare at the Sports Bra like burgers, appetizers and a full bar, with options for a wide variety of dietary preferences including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, non-alcoholic and dairy-free offerings, according to the news release.
While Fever games could take center stage in Indy during the WNBA season, the bar also purports to show effectively every televised women's college sport.
Each of the four new Sports Bra locations will be locally owned and operated with food from nearby producers and "support their hometown teams" with decorations and team memorabilia, the release said.

That's triple the amount in the year prior, and sales are on pace for a similar level in 2025. With a near-record $35 trillion tied up in US home equity, households are dipping into their housing wealth to pay for renovations and other purchases rather than buy new homes that would require them to switch into mortgages at higher rates. With sales of previously owned homes — and thus new loans — stalling, the home loan industry is paying attention. 'They're taking their mortgage-making factories and starting to use them to create home equity products,' said Gabe Rivera, co-head of securitized products at PGIM. Investment firms are scooping up the loans and then repackaging hundreds or thousands of them at a time into bonds of varying size and risk, a process known as securitization. This year, Atlanta-based Angel Oak Capital Advisors and New York's Annaly Capital Management Inc. both issued their first-ever bonds secured by home equity lines of credit. In April, mortgage servicing giant Mr. Cooper Group Inc. joined the growing ranks with its first bond backed by second mortgages. Home equity-backed bonds are still a relatively small corner of the market, at least compared with the vast bond offerings for mortgages guaranteed by the quasi-government entities Fannie Mae (FNMA, FNMAS, FNMFO), Freddie Mac (FMCC, FMCCH, FMCCM) and their sister organization Ginnie Mae. Together, the trio are expected to crank out some $1.15 trillion of MBS this year alone, according to Citigroup Inc. estimates. Still, the field is growing. TPG Angelo Gordon estimates there's a $2 trillion market for home equity products. And thanks to tighter lending standards and regulations, the debt also appears safer than in the 2008 financial crisis, when many borrowers in riskier loans fell into foreclosure. That's piqued the interest of big investors, including private credit firms, which are deploying other strategies to scale up access to home equity. One method is to agree to purchase substantially all of the loans that mortgage lenders write, even ones that haven't yet been made, as long as each fits certain criteria. Those arrangements are known as 'forward flow' agreements. Despite the growth in direct lending, the public securities markets often represent the largest and most liquid source of capital to fund such deals. To homeowners, the vast difference between the rate on their current mortgage and what they'd get with a new mortgage poses a problem. Before, when a consumer wanted to convert some home equity into cash, they could simply replace their existing mortgage with a new bigger one in a cash-out refinancing. But with mortgage rates still high, that no longer makes sense. Instead, homeowners are using either a home equity line of credit, which is a revolving credit line akin to a credit card, or they can take out a second mortgage. Both achieve a similar purpose: convert home equity into an up-front cash advance, without jeopardizing the existing mortgage. 'Home equity products are designed to let homeowners take cash out against their house while keeping in place senior mortgages with below-market coupons,' said PGIM's Rivera. Use of a newer solution, home equity investment, or HEI, contracts more than tripled last year. They work by giving a homeowners an up front cash payment, in exchange for which borrowers agree to give lenders some of their future home equity. HEI contracts are often used by borrowers with somewhat lower credit scores than those who borrow against their existing equity or take out second lien mortgages, and are often used to consolidate debt or pay for remodeling and home renovation projects, according to DBRS. Some investors caution that HEI contracts resemble mortgage products with adjustable interest rates from the early 2000s, which ended up delivering losses to investors. 'Investors considering bonds backed by these contracts should carefully scrutinize them,' said Michael Hislop, an analyst at Curasset Capital Management. 'What kinds of borrowers are going to find HEI the most attractive? Ones without money to make mortgage payments.' DBRS said defaults of HEI contracts have been relatively rare so far, according to its 2024 report. By and large, securitizations of home equity have performed relatively well in recent years. Lending volume for home equity-related debt is far below the years leading up to the housing bubble bursting nearly two decades ago. Industry insiders say that consumer housing reforms made after the subprime housing bubble of the early 2000s have purged most of the riskier borrowers from the market and that structural housing shortages are keeping upward pressure on home prices. Even so, there are dangers. The good performance has coincided with a period of strong housing price growth and low unemployment. If home prices were to enter a sustained decline, pressures could emerge, according to Ryan Singer, head of residential credit at Balbec Capital. 'It's true that there are trillions of dollars in home equity,' said Singer. 'But if you look at the individual mortgages, you can actually see that borrowers are making very small down payments on average, and that there are plenty of people with no equity in their homes.' Still, as long as interest rates remain elevated homeowners will continue to look for alternative ways to borrow. And with plenty of specialist companies tapping into structured debt markets for the first time, Wall Street's bond machine will keep humming. Escaping The Pig Butcher: Avoiding The Online Scam Stealing Billions
Pig butchering has conned billions of dollars from victims worldwide. The New York Post recently reported that the Cambodian-based Huione Group gang has reaped over $4 billion between August 2021 and January 2025. To some, pig butchering is nothing more than requesting a special cut at the meat market. Unfortunately, it's become a notorious form of cybercrime that causes complete financial devastation for its victims. Pig butchering (Sha Zhu Pan, which translates to 'killing pig plate') has a far more nefarious meaning. The Department of Financial Protection & Innovation defines pig butchering as a 'form of investment fraud in the crypto space where scammers build relationships with targets through social engineering and then lure them to invest crypto in fake opportunities or platforms created by the scammer.' Pig butchering has conned billions of dollars from victims worldwide. There are a few things to watch out for to avoid being lured into such extortion schemes. Often, they target seniors and other populations less familiar with cybercrime. According to The National Council on Aging, such scams often start with receiving a message out of the blue claiming to mistake you for someone else or having online profile pictures that look like a model. It's really important not to respond or send money to random people who contact you online, no matter how compelling their story is. Scammers are dependent upon gaining your trust, and a sympathetic or catchy story is a great way to do that. Another big warning sign is getting messages via SMS or social media that quickly redirect you to chat on another platform like Telegram or WeChat, which are less regulated and moderated. They might convince you to invest a small amount of money, which is then returned to you at a bigger profit. Before too long, the amounts of money being requested increase by leaps and bounds. A recent story out of Ohio details how an initial request for $10,000 quickly turned into a request for $500,000 to unlock any profits that were made. Even more appalling, the scammer requested the victim to 'go to a loan shark' to get the funds! In 2024, Meta removed 'over 2 million accounts' suspected of running crypto investment scams like pig butchering. Companies are starting to do more to combat pig butchering, but it's still a very real problem. A big step in their effort to keep people from falling for these scams is raising awareness through public posts broadcasting safety tips. They recently started rolling out warnings in Facebook Messenger and Instagram DMs tipping users off to 'potentially suspicious interactions or cold outreach from people you don't know', which is a good start. Banks are also beginning to require customers to acknowledge the dangers of scams when transferring money by ACH, Zelle, and wire. If you think you've been a victim of pig butchering, it's very important to both contact your bank and file a fraud report with the Federal Trade Commission. The sooner you report an incident, the more that can be done to help you potentially recover any lost funds. A recent blog from Norton advises victims to keep track of information, including 'messages, transaction records, and scammer contact information,' to better help authorities combat fraud. Although pig-butchering is an online scam that isn't going away anytime soon, the public can better protect themselves by being more aware of the warning signs and consequences of being involved in such a scheme. It reminds one of the classic saying, 'If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!'

Supreme Court spares US gun companies from Mexico's lawsuit
By John Kruzel and Andrew Chung WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday spared two American gun companies from a lawsuit by Mexico's government accusing them of aiding illegal firearms trafficking to drug cartels and fueling gun violence in the southern neighbor of the United States. The justices in a 9-0 ruling overturned a lower court's ruling that had allowed the lawsuit to proceed against firearms maker Smith & Wesson and distributor Interstate Arms. The lower court had found that Mexico plausibly alleged that the companies aided and abetted illegal gun sales, harming its government. The companies had argued for the dismissal of Mexico's suit, filed in Boston in 2021, under a 2005 U.S. law called the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act that broadly shields gun companies from liability for crimes committed with their products. The Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided in 2024 that the alleged conduct by the companies fell outside these protections. "Mexico alleges that the companies aided and abetted unlawful sales routing guns to Mexican drug cartels. The question presented is whether Mexico's complaint plausibly pleads that conduct. We conclude it does not," liberal Justice Elena Kagan wrote for the court. The case came to the Supreme Court at a complicated time for U.S.-Mexican relations as President Donald Trump pursues on-again, off-again tariffs on Mexican goods. Trump has also accused Mexico of doing too little to stop the flow of synthetic drugs such as fentanyl and migrant arrivals at the border. Mexico's lawsuit, filed in Boston in 2021, accused the two companies of violating various U.S. and Mexican laws. Mexico claims that the companies have deliberately maintained a distribution system that included firearms dealers who knowingly sell weapons to third-party, or "straw," purchasers who then traffic guns to cartels in Mexico. The suit also accused the companies of unlawfully designing and marketing their guns as military-grade weapons to drive up demand among the cartels, including by associating their products with the American military and law enforcement. The gun companies said they make and sell lawful products. To avoid its lawsuit being dismissed under the 2005 law, Mexico was required to plausibly allege that the companies aided and abetted illegal gun sales and that such conduct was the "proximate cause" - a legal principle involving who is responsible for causing an injury - of the harms claimed by Mexico. Mexico in the lawsuit sought monetary damages of an unspecified amount and a court order requiring Smith & Wesson and Interstate Arms to take steps to "abate and remedy the public nuisance they have created in Mexico." Gun violence fueled by trafficked U.S.-made firearms has contributed to a decline in business investment and economic activity in Mexico and forced its government to incur unusually high costs on services including healthcare, law enforcement and the military, according to the lawsuit. Mexico, a country with strict firearms laws, has said most of its gun homicides are committed with weapons trafficked from the United States and valued at more than $250 million annually. The Supreme Court heard arguments in the case on March 4.
