NDTV31-07-2025
Mangaluru:
In a major development in connection with the mass grave allegation case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has recovered bones during the excavation of the sixth burial site at a Hindu pilgrimage centre in Mangaluru district of Karnataka, sources confirmed on Thursday.
This discovery is likely to mark a significant turning point in the investigation into the mass grave allegations in the Dharmasthala temple town.
According to SIT sources, two bones were recovered from the sixth burial site located in a forested area.
Following the recovery, the SIT has shifted its full focus to a careful and detailed excavation of the site, with the entire team redirected to assist with the process.
In response to the discovery, SIT chief DGP P. Mohanty and DIG M.N. Anuchet are rushing to the site. The excavation is being carried out in the presence of the Tehsildar, forensic science experts, and SIT personnel.
Authorities are proceeding cautiously with the digging process. The recovered bones will be documented and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further examination and DNA analysis.
Sources stated that the whistle blower has claimed that he had buried 8 bodies at the 6th burial site.
However, no official statement has been released yet regarding the discovery.
Meanwhile, DGP and IGP M.A. Saleem has issued an order deputing nine additional police personnel - including a head constable and several constables - to assist the SIT in the ongoing investigation. Earlier, the department had provided 20 police officers to the SIT.
Digging at the marked burial sites continued for the third consecutive day on Thursday, despite rain. Of the 13 marked burial sites, excavation work is currently underway at sites numbered 6, 7, and 8.
Civic workers are being deployed to carry out the digging, while Tehsildars, forensic science experts, and the complainant are also present at the site for monitoring.
SIT chief Mohanty had earlier stated that nothing has been recovered from the burial sites excavated so far.
However, reports have surfaced that sleuths recovered a red torn blouse and a PAN card belonging to a woman named Lakshmi from the first burial site.
Additionally, the whistle blower and complainant in the case has reportedly submitted a skull - allegedly excavated from the burial site - to the SIT.
In a major development, on July 11, the unidentified complainant in the case, who had claimed that he was forced to bury several bodies of women and girls who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala village appeared before a court in Karnataka's Mangaluru district and recorded his statement.
He requested that the police exhume the bodies in his presence. He further alleged that the bodies of the women showed clear signs of sexual assault.
They were found without clothes or undergarments and bore injuries suggesting violent sexual acts. The revelations have shocked the state.
A retired Supreme Court judge and activists demanded a SIT probe monitored by the Supreme Court or the High Court into the shocking Dharmasthala murders involving many women, girls and destitute men.
The development has sparked a major controversy.

Dharmasthala burials: No skeletal remains found at site no. 13

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the complaint of burial of over 100 bodies, on Tuesday carried out digging on a part of the large site no. 13 in Dharmasthala, but did not find any skeletal remains. The digging in other parts of the site will continue on Wednesday. The excavation at site no. 13, which is among the 13 'burial' sites identified by the complainant, was a complex one, as this plain land close to the vented dam has seen a lot of changes over the years. Loads of construction debris have also been dumped. Hence, the SIT had decided to scan the site area using ground penetrating radar (GPR), to get a clear map of the contours of the land beneath and detect substances lying inside. The site was scanned using the GPR for a few minutes on Monday. On Tuesday, workers cleared shrubs grown on site no. 13 and also from the adjoining site. Then the GPR, mounted on a drone, was used to scan the whole area. From 3 p.m., an earth mover was used to remove mud from one spot. After reaching about 10 ft., water started to seep in, and the personnel used pumpsets to pump out slushy water. The excavation ended around 7 p.m. after digging for about 18 ft. The personnel used inflatable balloon lights while mud was filled back at the place. The excavation on Tuesday was carried out in the presence of the complainant; Stella Verghese, Assistant Commissioner, Puttur Sub Division, and SIT SPs Jitendra Kumar Dayama and C.A. Simon. SIT chief and Director General of Police Pronab Mohanty briefly visited the spot on Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, a team of police officers from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) visited site no. 13 on Tuesday. The officers of NHRC, which has registered a suo-motu case on reports related to mass burial complaint, on Monday first visited the SIT office in Belthangady, and then the Dharmathala gram panchayat office and the site close to Bahubali hills, which the SIT had excavated on August 9. Ruled out Sources in the SIT ruled out reinvestigation into the death of PU student Padmalatha in February 1987, as sought by her sister Indravati. The Corps of Detectives (CoD) had investigated the case, and a 'C' report stating that it is undetected was filed before the jurisdictional court. The case can be reinvestigated only if there is an order from the court, sources said. Indravati had given a representation to SIT on August 11 to reinvestigate the case.

RG Kar Rape And Murder Case: Victims Father Meets Kolkata Police Commissioner After Receiving No Help

After getting no concrete response from the police station in Kolkata, the RG Kar victim's father, on Tuesday, met the Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma with a complaint letter. He has alleged that he was being harassed while filing a complaint at the police station regarding the alleged police attack on his wife during Saturday's "Nabanna Avijan" (March to the State Secretariat). Therefore, the victim's father has sent the complaint letter to the City Police Commissioner through email. "I am really sad and shocked that nothing has changed even after a year. Last year on August 9, my only daughter was brutally murdered. This year on August 9, my wife was attacked. She is suffering from headache and cannot stand. Despite all the hardships that have befallen us, Kolkata Police is leading us astray. I request you, please register a zero FIR and send it to the right police station," the victim's father wrote in his complaint. On Monday night, the victim's father sent the complaint letter in this regard to the Shakespeare Sarani police station in Kolkata through an email. However, he alleged that on Tuesday afternoon, he received a response, saying that he has to lodge the complaint at the Park Street police station. Later, he received another response, saying that he must reach out to the New Market police station. Sensing that he again might be asked to reach out to different police stations to register his complaint, the victim's father requested for a zero FIR this time and sent the complaint letter directly to Kolkata Police Commissioner. The first anniversary of the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 was marred by massive violence following a scuffle between cops and protesters participating in the "Nabanna Avijan". The victim's mother alleged that she was beaten up by the policemen after she, along with her husband and other protesters, tried to march towards Nabanna (State Secretariat). The victim's mother and the BJP leaders alleged that in the police action, the sacred conch shell-bangle on her wrist, traditionally believed to be the symbolic representation of married Hindu women, was broken. Kolkata Police Commissioner Verma said on August 10 that they are examining the footage of the CCTV cameras and video footage to ascertain whether the victim's mother was beaten up or not.
