PFBC: Cold-weather life jacket requirement still in effect
PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is reminding all anglers and boaters that the annual cold-weather life jacket requirement is still in effect.
As the weather begins to warm, the PFBC understands that it can be easy to forget the requirement, however, it will be in effect through April 30. From Nov. 1 through April 30, boaters are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while underway or at anchor on boats less than 16 feet in length or on any kayak, canoe or paddleboard.
'This time of year, despite the balmy springtime temperatures, it can be a tragic time for boaters who don't wear their life jackets,' Mark Sweppenhiser, Director of the PFBC's Bureau of Boating, said. 'On sunny days when warm air temperatures draw us outdoors for our favorite activities like fishing and boating, please remember water temperatures are still bitterly cold and present tremendous danger to someone who falls into the water.'
Sudden cold-water immersion occurs when a person is unexpectedly plunged into cold water. The PFBC noted that cold-water shock can result in water inhalation, leading to panic, hyperventilation or the inability to swim.
While nearly 80% of all boating fatalities occurred because boaters were not wearing life jackets, since the mandatory life jacket wear law was enacted in 2012, the PFBC has seen a 50% drop in boating incidents resulting in fatalities during the cold weather months.

Funding available for Somerset County residents affected by flooding
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Residents who were impacted by the mid-May flooding may soon be getting some help from a local grant opportunity. The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies (CFA), along with the county, after the flooding, worked to establish the Somerset County Disaster Recovery Fund. This fund was intended to help residents recover from natural disasters like the flooding that was brought on by heavy rain. Applications for the Somerset County Disaster Recovery Fund Grant are now open and will be accepted until Wednesday, June 18. Nonprofit organizations, governmental entities, and religious organizations that are assisting residents with response and recovery may apply for a grant of up to $10,000. Pennsylvania is suing the USDA over cutting funding to a $1 billion food aid program for states Here are some eligibility requirements: Must be a 501(c)(3) organization, governmental entity, or religious organization. Applicants also must be registered and operate in Somerset County and be current on all taxes. Applicants for this first round of funding must be able to demonstrate and document the direct impact of the adverse weather events experienced in Somerset County on May 13-14. The applications will be reviewed by a committee that is made up of residents designated by the commissioners and emergency services. Steelers 2025 Training Camp schedule released
LATROBE, Pa. (WTAJ) — Football season is coming! The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially announced their 2025 Training Camp schedule on Wednesday. The Steelers will be returning once again to Saint Vincent College, for their 58th year, with camp scheduled to start once players report on Wednesday, July 23, with the first practice open to the public the next day on Thursday, July 24 at 1:55 p.m. The team's first padded practice will occur on Tuesday, July 29, also scheduled to start at 1:55 p.m. The highly anticipated 'Friday Night Lights' practice will be held at Latrobe Memorial Stadium Aug. 1 at 7 p.m., with the Steelers' final practice that will be open to the public at Saint Vincent College being held Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m. Joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will occur on Wednesday, Aug 14 at Acrisure Stadium, but will not be open to the public. Admission to most of the open practices is free for Steelers Nation, but attendees will need to have a mobile ticket, and season ticket holders will have early access to secure their tickets through Ticketmaster on Tuesday, June 24 at 10 a.m. Wait list members will follow at 11 a.m. Any remaining public tickets will be available at Noon.
