Stella or stellar? Antioch's Dohrmann is both, shutting out Prairie Ridge for 7 innings in a supersectional.
Dohrmann has found her place, to say the least. She started in the circle for the Sequoits in the Class 3A Kaneland Supersectional in Maple Park on Monday.
'Going from JV to varsity, I was really proud of myself,' she said. 'I just knew I had to work really hard to prove myself and earn a spot.'
Dohrmann showed what she can do against Prairie Ridge, throwing seven scoreless innings. But the Wolves scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Antioch freshman Addison Osborne in the eighth inning to pull out a 1-0 victory.
The Sequoits (24-14) fell short of a fourth consecutive trip to the state semifinals. Indiana recruit Reese Mosolino kept their bats silent for most of the game to lead Prairie Ridge (28-1-1). Junior shortstop Claire Schulyer, a Minnesota recruit, had the only two hits, both infield singles, for Antioch.
But Dohrmann impressed Mosolino.
'I could tell she has a lot of potential,' Mosolino said.
Dohrmann (6-4), who allowed seven hits and walked four, nearly matched Mosolino to keep the Sequoits in the game. Dohrmann said her drop curve and curveball were her two main pitches.
'When those two pitches are on, I know I'm going to have a good day, and I had a good day today,' she said.
With runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, Dohrmann dug deep to force a groundout to keep the game scoreless.
'Stella hung in there and did a great job,' Antioch coach Anthony Rocco said. 'She kept them off balance and got out of several jams.'
The Wolves benefited from a one-out error in the eighth, and Bella Moore and Autumn Ledgerwood followed with singles to load the bases.
Rocco decided to bring in Osborne, who induced a pop-up for the second out. After the wild pitch, Osborne closed out the inning with a strikeout. But Mosolino retired the Sequoits in order to send the Wolves to the state semifinals.
Even with tears in her eyes, Dohrmann expressed confidence about the future.
'I'm very excited for the next few years because I know we're going to have the bats again and more pitchers coming in,' she said.
Of course, the Sequoits will also have Dohrmann, who finished with a 3.40 ERA in 67 1/3 innings. Rocco said she has come a long way since the start of the season, when the team was searching for a go-to pitcher following the graduation of four-year ace Jacey Schuler, who is a freshman at Michigan State.
'Stella didn't know what her role would be this year,' Rocco said. 'She gives us something a little different than our other pitchers. She panned out for us.'
Antioch junior catcher Addie Webb, a Bradley commit, noted Dohrmann's improvement over the course of the season.
'She has progressively gotten a lot better,' Webb said. 'I think her mentality got a lot better after being timid at first. It clicked for her.'
Antioch junior first baseman Sam Hillner said Dohrmann was particularly good at the end of the season.
'The past two games she had a different look and has been locked in,' Hillner said.

Wolves Challenge Benfica with Bid for 24-Goal Serbian Forward
Wolves Test Benfica's Resolve with Late Move for Franjo Ivanovic In a summer where Wolverhampton Wanderers are reshaping their squad with precision and purpose, the pursuit of Franjo Ivanovic signals a growing confidence in the project under Vitor Pereira. The Serbian striker has long been tipped for a move to Benfica, but Wolves' financial clout has added an unexpected twist to the tale. As reported by Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri, although Ivanovic still prefers a move to Lisbon, Wolves' 'financial power' is giving him pause for thought. It is a classic tug-of-war between footballing tradition and Premier League muscle. Benfica offer Champions League nights and a rich history of nurturing strikers. Wolves offer wages, Premier League exposure and an increasingly ambitious outlook. Goalscorer on the Rise Ivanovic enjoyed a prolific 2024/25 season with Union Saint-Gilloise, scoring 24 goals and establishing himself as one of Europe's most promising forwards. At 21, he represents potential and pedigree, with several top-tier clubs monitoring his trajectory. Benfica acted first, reportedly agreeing personal terms on a three-year contract, but have struggled to meet the Belgian side's £21.6 million valuation. That delay may yet cost them. Union SG are open to dealing with the highest bidder, and Wolves, buoyed by over £100 million raised through the sales of Matheus Cunha and Rayan Aït-Nouri, have the spending power to push their way to the front of the queue. Wolves' Summer Strategy Shaping Up Pereira's Wolves are not sitting still. They have already converted Jacob Strand Larsen's loan into a permanent deal, added Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo and secured Jhon Arias, one of the stars of Fluminense's Club World Cup campaign. These are smart additions that point towards a more dynamic, creative Wolves in the months ahead. Ivanovic, however, would be the marquee. Young, direct, and proven at senior level, his arrival would signal Wolves' intent not only to stabilise but to push higher. With Nelson Semedo departing, Wolves are also in the market for a right-back, though the pursuit of Ivanovic may now take centre stage. Benfica Reputation Faces Premier League Reality For Ivanovic, the decision is not simple. Benfica's track record in developing strikers is unrivalled. From Darwin Núñez to Gonçalo Ramos, Lisbon has long been a springboard for greater things. Benfica's presence in the Champions League adds an extra lure, offering continental football of the highest calibre. Photo: IMAGO But Wolves' interest is serious, and the Premier League remains a compelling stage. Tavolieri's insight that 'Wolves' financial power is making him hesitate' is telling. This is not simply about money, but also opportunity. At Molineux, Ivanovic could lead the line from day one. In Lisbon, he may need to fight for his place in a deeper squad. Decision Could Define Wolves' Ambitions Whether Ivanovic chooses Lisbon or Wolverhampton, his decision will be watched closely across Europe. For Wolves, successfully hijacking a deal from a club of Benfica's standing would underline their growing status. For Benfica, missing out may expose how delicate the balance has become between history and modern finance. One thing is clear: Wolves are not here to make up the numbers. With Premier League money and a clear vision under Vitor Pereira, they are aiming to punch harder and smarter in this summer's market. Our View – EPL Index Analysis For Wolves fans, this feels like a move we should be going all in on. Ivanovic ticks every box. He is young, powerful, clinical and has that raw edge that can make a striker really exciting in the Premier League. Benfica are a big name, yes, but Wolves can offer him a league that truly tests his talent week in, week out. With the cash from Cunha and Aït-Nouri's exits, there's no excuse not to be bold. We've seen too many young talents slip away because the club hesitated or lowballed. That cannot happen this time. Pereira is clearly building something fresh, and Ivanovic would slot right in. Give him the No.9 shirt, let him lead the line and let Molineux see a player on the rise, not one boxed into a development role elsewhere. If this deal comes off, it could be one of the smartest pieces of business Wolves have done in years.

Wolves express interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Amine Adli
Sport Bild – as relayed by – reports that Wolves are interested in Bayer Leverkusen attacker Amine Adli. The 25-year-old himself is said to have requested that his Bundesliga club enter into negotiations with the Premier League outfit. The report nevertheless notes that the two clubs remain far apart on a potential transfer fee. Adli – after an injury-interrupted 2024/25 campaign – has seen his estimated market value decline to €18m. Germany's red company team remain convinced that Adli is still worth €30m. Adli attained this career-high-value in May of 2024 as part of B04 head coach Xabi Alonso's league/cup winning undefeated squad. As for the player's personal wishes, Adli has furnished inconsistent statements in recent weeks. The Moroccan international appeared to leave his future with die Werkself open in an interview at the beginning of training camp. Nine days ago, however, Adli declared that there was 'no need to discuss a transfer' when speaking on his progress in camp under new head coach Erik ten Hag. Adli's current Leverkusen deal, extended just last November, runs until 2028. GGFN |
