Southern defeats UC San Diego women 68-56 for its first NCAA Tournament win in seven appearances
The 16th-seeded Jaguars (21-14) won for the first time in seven tournament appearances and go up against overall No. 1 seed UCLA in the round of 64 on Friday.
Reed, who came in averaging under 11 points a game, made 8 of 10 shots including three 3-pointers. Aniya Gourdine shot 7 of 14 and added 17 points and seven rebounds. Tionna Lidge scored 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The Jaguars shot 49%.
Sumayah Sugapong led UCSD (20-16) with 19 points, making three 3-pointers, and had six assists. Parker Montgomery hit four 3-pointers and added 15 points. The Triton duo combined for 25 second-half points. UCSD, which reached the tournament in its first year of eligibility, shot 34%.
A 3-pointer by Sabrina Ma and a bucket from Junae Mahan got the Tritons within six with a minute to go before Southern's free throws accounted for the remainder of the scoring.
Montgomery and Sugapong hit a pair of 3-pointers apiece and combined for all but two of UCSD's 20 third-quarter points to cut a 20-point deficit to nine heading into the final period.
The game was tied only at 2-2. Reed, who entered midway through the first quarter, made a trio of 3-pointers and added another bucket in leading the Jaguars to a 19-11 first-quarter edge. Gourdine had a pair of 3-pointers and Reed eight straight points in the second quarter when Southern outscored UCSD 21-9.

Gabe Davis to visit with Steelers on Tuesday
The Steelers are going to take another look at some veteran receiver help. Gabe Davis is slated to visit with Pittsburgh on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The receiver is set to fly to Pittsburgh on Monday for his second visit with the organization this offseason. He previously visited with the Steelers in June. Davis, 26, spent last season with the Jaguars, appearing in 10 games. He caught 20 passes for 239 yards with a pair of touchdowns before suffering a torn meniscus and missing the rest of the year. The Jags released Davis in May. He's also met with the Saints, Giants, and 49ers this offseason.

Saints Play of the Day: Spencer Rattler's clutch 20-yard touchdown pass
There are just 20 days left until the 2025 season begins, and it just so happens that an important touchdown from Sunday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars went for 20 yards. That makes it the perfect choice for today's Saints Play of the Day. As the starting quarterback competition rages on in New Orleans, Spencer Rattler badly needed to have a good game on Sunday. Tyler Shough wowed fans with his arm last week, and Rattler was just ok. The second-year passer did exactly what he had to do to keep the competition alive and even possibly take the lead. The specific play that we are talking about today came with less than 30 seconds left in the game. Rattler had driven the offense to the red zone on the last drive, but threw an interception. It felt like a done deal that the Jaguars would win the game by a score of 17-9. Instead, the Saints got one more shot with just under three minutes to go. Mostly aided by a couple of passes to Mason Tipton and a nice scramble, Rattler got New Orleans within striking distance. On 3rd and 9, with 27 seconds left, the quarterback found Dante Pettis for a 20-yard touchdown. You can watch the clutch touchdown for yourself here. Rattler then successfully converted the two-point try to tie the game at 17 all. A Jonas Sanker interception on the ensuing drive secured the tie for the Saints, but really, it felt like a massive win. Rattler finished the day 18-for-24 with 199 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Pettis had four catches for 57 yards and that score. Both performances will be fresh in the minds of the coaching staff, as roster and starting job decisions must be made soon.

What are the Saints getting in trade for Jaguars center Luke Fortner?
We know the New Orleans Saints are swapping defensive tackle Khalen Saunders for center Luke Fortner, but what are they getting in the ex-Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman? To find out, we reached out to Jaguars Wire's Paul Bretl, who shared some insight on Fortner's time in Jacksonville and why the team chose to move on from him. "Fortner was a third-round pick by the Jaguars in 2022 and started two seasons for the team at center," Bretl wrote back to us. "However, during the 2024 offseason, the team signed veteran center Mitch Morse, which relegated Fortner to a backup role last season. This offseason -- with Morse retiring -- the Jaguars signed Robert Hainsey in free agency and drafted Jonah Monheim on Day 3. With those two as the likely top center options, Fortner didn't have a clear path to making this year's 53-man roster." So it sounds like the Jaguars already planned on moving on from Fortner before the teams engaged in trade talks. Fortner was charged in drawing nine penalties and allowing six sacks across those two years as a starter, and their new coaching staff wasn't interested in keeping him in the starting lineup. But a change of scenery could be good for the 27-year old. Before he turned pro, Fortner spent five years at Kentucky (where he was college teammates with Saints offensive tackle Landon Young). Pro Football focus charting found he logged 857 snaps at center, almost all of them in his senior year, while helping out at both guard spots through his first four years. He was named first-team All-SEC after moving to center full-time in 2021. The Jaguars kept him at center where he played every snap but earned middling grades in 2022 and 2023. He only got on the field for 13 snaps on offense last year.
