Thirteen years since gauge conversion, no daily train from Tenkasi to Chennai
TENKASI: Thirteen years have passed since the century-old Tirunelveli-Tenkasi railway line was converted into a broad gauge. Till day, there is no daily direct train service from the region to Chennai via Pavoorchatram, Ambasamudram and Tirunelveli, and commuters have to depend on buses.
According to the Tenkasi District Rail Users Association, people used to travel on train (Nos. 111/112 ) which was operated between Chennai Egmore and Sengottai/Tenkasi. The service, which was first operated in 1902 was stopped in the late 1980s.
President of the association R Pandiaraja recently submitted a petition Southern Railway officials, stating that the current tri-weekly super fast service is inadequate to cater to the needs and demanded a daily servicebetween Tambaram and Sengottai via Virudhachalam, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Pavoorchatram and Tenkasi.
'There is no direct service to Chennai on Sundays and no return train from Chennai on Fridays. As a result, people are forced to rely on expensive private buses, paying up to Rs 2,000 or more per trip,' he said.
The association pointed out that operating a train via Pavoorchatram, Ambasamudram, and Tirunelveli is not only shorter for Chennai-bound passengers from Tenkasi and Tirunelveli but also provides an overnight link to Madurai, Virudhachalam and Tiruchy.
'The Tirunelveli-Tenkasi line, opened in phases between 1902 and 1903, runs via Cheranmahadevi, Kallidaikurichi, Ambasamudram, Kadayam, and Pavoorchatram at the scenic foothills of the Western Ghats. In the 1997-98 Railway Budget, gauge conversion of the 357-km Kollam-Tirunelveli-Thiruchendur and Tenkasi-Virudhunagar routes was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 712 crore. The Tirunelveli-Tenkasi section was closed for conversion in December 2008 and reopened in September 2012,' said Pandiraja.
K Jegan, secretary of the association, said, 'Despite completion of full electrification and track upgrades enabling speed up to 110 kmph, a daily express train to the State capital is yet to be realised. Tatkal quota on Chennai-bound trains like Nellai, Pothigai, Ananthapuri, Kanniyakumari, and Senthur expresses get booked within minutes. More than 300 people remain on waiting list regularly.'
When contacted, Madurai Divisional Railway Manager Sharad Srivastava said, 'The proposal for a daily train in the route is under process. The decision has to be taken at the top level.'

Dehradun: Uttarakhand has disbursed Rs 19.5 crore in compensation to families affected by human-wildlife conflict in the 2024–25 financial year, officials said at the 21st meeting of the state wildlife board in Dehradun on Thursday. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami chaired the meeting and directed forest department officials to focus on both conservation and linking forest wealth to local livelihoods. These proposals will now be sent to the National Board for Wildlife for final clearance. The board also granted in-principle approval for managing the Rudranath pilgrimage route through the Eco Development Committee (EDC) and setting up a mini transit treatment centre under the Kedarnath wildlife division in Gopeshwar. Officials from the forest department said 22 major wildlife-related projects received approval from the National Board for Wildlife since the previous meeting. They also said over 75,000 monkeys were sterilised in the past three years under the state's monkey population control programme, with a further target of 40,000 set for 2024–25 across 27 forest divisions. Responding to a directive issued by the CM in the last meeting, divisional forest officers are now visiting conflict sites and disbursing compensation directly to affected families, officials confirmed. The board also noted that four new eco-tourism zones have been established this year as part of the govt's wider efforts to promote sustainable tourism and boost local economies. Speaking at the meeting, forest minister Subodh Uniyal said, "Uttarakhand is a state rich in biodiversity. We must continue to sustainably utilise our forest resources and find ways to integrate them with community livelihoods. Air India to operate special relief flights from Delhi, Mumbai for families of crash victims
New Delhi: In a compassionate move to assist the families of victims affected by the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171, the airline on Thursday announced two special relief flights -- one each from Delhi and Mumbai -- to Ahmedabad. These flights are meant to bring the next of kin of passengers and Air India staff to the crash site and nearby hospitals. According to the airline's post on X, the first relief flight from Delhi (IX1555) will depart at 11 p.m. on Thursday, followed by the return flight (IX1556) from Ahmedabad at 1.10 a.m. on June 13. From Mumbai, flight AI1402 will also depart at 11 p.m., and the return flight AI1409 is scheduled for 1.15 a.m. "Families and relatives in Delhi and Mumbai who wish to travel can contact the dedicated hotline at 1800 5691 444," the airline said in a post on social media platform X. The relief flights come as part of a broader support effort following Thursday's devastating incident. Abdullah's words, at a convention hosted by Travel Agents Association of India in Srinagar, were both an admission of pain and a promise of renewal in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives and left the Valley's booming tourism industry in turmoil. The CM was addressing stakeholders attending the 'Chalo Kashmir' and 'Rally for Valley' campaigns, both aimed at reviving tourist confidence in the region. He acknowledged the steep decline in tourism after April 22, with flight prices plunging from Rs 22,000 to Rs 3,500 and hotel rates nosediving from Rs 80,000 to Rs 25,000 — and rooms are still vacant. "We had 50 flights operating every day and all flights were packed. Now it's down to 15 and tickets can be available even an hour before the journey," he said candidly.
