Welsh beach named among best in the world — better than those in Greece and Thailand

When you think of the best beaches in the world, you might think of the far flung reaches of Australia or Thailand - or perhaps even southern France and Greece. However, one of the best beaches is actually much closer to home in Wales and it's beaten out some of the more famous hotspots for a top position.
Coming in at number 28 on Enjoy Travel's top 50 beaches, Whitesands Beach is near St Davids in Pembrokeshire.
This incredible stretch of sand is overlooked by the hill of Carn Llidi, while the white sands curve towards the rocky headland of St Davids Head.
It's got Blue Flag status so is perfect for a summer dip and the beach is quiet despite its popularity.
It does cost £6 to park, but the beach is worth the money. Reviewers on Tripadvisor have been blown away by how gorgeous it is, with one person writing: 'An absolute gem! Beautiful dog friendly beach with the sound of crashing waves.
"Footpath either side for a view across the bay. Called into the cafe which is also dog friendly for an ice cream, the staff were really friendly and welcoming. Plenty of parking available however £6 is expensive if you are only there for a short visit.'
Another said: 'What a fabulous place for a beach holiday! This beach has a wide soft sand beach and lovely paths to walk above the beach.'
If you grow tired of enjoying the beach, this part of Wales has much more to offer tourists.
Just 13 minutes away is the irresistibly charming town of Solva.
In 2022, luxury travel magazine Conde Nast Traveller listed this village as one of the 'most beautiful in the UK and Ireland' and it's easy to see why.
Solva is home to an amazing harbour which was once the main connection in Wales before roads were constructed.
A wander along the sandy shore will show you fishing boats and limekilns - a remnant of the past.
The village is also speckled with pastel coloured homes and surrounded by beautiful hills that make Solva a uniquely serene location to spend a few days by the sea.

Best beach in the world with 'whitest sand' is 'paradise' for travellers

It has been named the best beach in the world for those looking to enjoy the warm weather and relax on the white sands, according to a new study Many Brits love to escape the dreary weather for a day by the sea. Perhaps it's the golden sand, crystal clear water or simply the warmer climate that draws you in. Well, Luxury holiday company CV Villas has conducted research to find out which beaches boast the whitest sand in the world. Let's be honest, nothing screams 'perfect beach' more than pristine white sand. ‌ The study analysed Google Maps images of approximately 200 beaches, examining the colour of each shoreline to determine the results. Unsurprisingly, the beach with the whitest sand is nowhere near the UK, but it's certainly worth the flight time, reports the Express. ‌ Tulum Beach in Mexico was crowned as having the whitest sand in the world, as it had the least deviation from pure white. ‌ Tulum Beach sits on the Yucatan coast of Mexico at the country's southeastern tip, looking out to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Tulum is a huge tourist destination known for its beaches and well-preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port city. ‌ The main building is a large stone structure called El Castillo which sits atop a rocky cliff looking down across the white sand beach and turquoise sea. Given its tourist draw, there are plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars situated throughout the long narrow stretch of town. However, some visitors on Tripadvisor do note that prices can be high for amenities such as parking. ‌ Having visited in July 2024, an American tourist left a Tripadvisor review saying the area had both "good and bad" points. They described the beach, however, as a "paradise". Coming in second place was Anse Source D'Argent in the Seychelles, which had a variation of 4.3, and Marmari Beach in Greece took third place with a variation of 6.5. ‌ Here are the top 20 beaches with the whitest sand: 1. Tulum Beach, Mexico 2. Anse Source D'Argent, Seychelles 3. Marmari Beach, Greece ‌ 4. Tropea Beach, Italy and Platja de Muro, Spain 6. Cala Pluma, Spain 7. Plage de Valras, France ‌ 8. Cala Brandinchi, Italy 9. Stocking Island Beach, Bahamas and Taylor Bay Beach, Turks and Caicos 11. Varadero Beach, Cuba ‌ 12. Punta Prosciutto, Italy 13. Maya Bay Beach, Thailand 14. Carmel Beach, USA ‌ 15. Bamboo Island Beach, Thailand 16. Siesta Key Beach, USA 17. Spiaggia La Pelosa, Italy ‌ 18. Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico and Luskentyre Beach, Scotland 20. Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos Eight of the top 10 destinations are in Europe. If you're after a beach closer to home, Scotland's Luskentyre Beach shares the eighteenth spot with Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico.

One of the UK's busiest commuter trains is is bringing back first-class travel

Commuters on Chiltern Railways could travel to work in style, as the rail operator is reintroducing first-class carriages. The upgraded train class will offer 'spacious seats and improved connectivity for business and leisure travellers.' It's a big shake-up for Chiltern, as first-class seating hasn't be available in more than a decade. This is likely because their services, which connect London toBuckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands, are used by regular commuters, rather than passengers treating themselves on longer journeys. But while it sounds boujee, you'll still need to bring snacks, as this first-class offering doesn't include any food or drink, unlike those found on LNER and Avanti West Coast routes. While it might sound stingey, a spokesperson for Chiltern Railways told Metro that they 'don't believe that the market warrants a full catered offering at this point in time'. But added: 'There is a demand, especially in the leisure market, for greater differentiation in products.' However, not all experts agree, and there are concerns that the move to first-class echoes the snooty heyday of premium travel. Rail historian Christian Wolmar's said first-class is 'an outdated concept from the days of bowler-hatted gentlemen in their first-class compartment while their secretaries sat in second.' 'That era has gone. I think for those sort of services, there are very few people who would really want to pay for a premium,' he told the The Independent. The introduction of a first-class carriage isn't the only way Chiltern trains are being upgraded. Some of the trains still have carriages that date back to the 1970s. These will be swapped out to newer models, which will include: plug sockets and USB ports at every seat faster internet access digital information screens air conditioning improved luggage and bike storage facilities fully accessible toilets Chiltern passengers have long been calling for improvements to the services, as over on the r/uktrains Subreddit, @Head_Praline_5193 previously asked: 'Will Chiltern ever get any better?' 'Chiltern trains are frequently overcrowded on all routes…it seems poorly served compared to just about every other mainline,' they penned. More Trending Tripadvisor reveals similar views, with one scathing one-star review from MixalisK142 describing their experience as 'awful.' 'I have never found a seat on this railway. I have to pay almost £40 every time to stand for an hour and a half. There are always more than 10 people standing in each coach,' they argued, while @davidpC9073NE concluded that their journey was 'poor.' 'If I had a choice, I would never travel using this railway again.' Meanwhile, Chiltern told Metro that they 'look forward to offering an enhanced offering for all our customers.' According to data released in 2024 by the Department for Transport, Chiltern runs the second busiest train route in England and Wales: the 7.46am service from Princes Risborough to London Marylebone. The maximum load factor was calculated by dividing the passenger load of the carriages (excluding first-class) by the total capacity, and this popular commuter service had a rating of 165%. It was only topped by the 7.33am Thameslink service from Bedford to Three Bridges, at 204%. Do you have a story to share?
