Returnal – not an easy game (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
The Monday letters page calls for a new developer to take over the Halo franchise, as one reader recommends Test Drive Unlimited 2 on PS3.

Hard won reward
There's always a lot of talk about difficulty in video games but for myself I admit I like a hard game. Not all the time but I like to see some variety. If a developer thinks a game should be played at a certain level, I don't like to see them forced to change it, if they don't want to.
So that got me thinking about what is the most difficult game on the PlayStation 5? Which is what I play now. Demon's Souls is an obvious one, along with any other Soulslike, but I think it might actually be Returnal.
I'm a big fan of the game and I think its difficulty is handled relatively well, in that it's quite possible to get through the majority of the game with careful upgrading of your weapons and learning the rooms. But the last section and getting to the end is so difficult.
Beating the game, my heart in my mouth as I risk losing hours of progress, has been one of my exciting and rewarding gaming moments in a very long time (Saros is now my most anticipated game of next year). Curious to know what other readers think though.

Changing fortunes
I realise this isn't exactly topical but if you'd told my young self that Sega would end up quitting the hardware business by the start of the century and that Nintendo would become the most successful (with a few dips) my mind would've been blown.

To me, at my school, the Nintendo consoles were deeply uncool and overly expensive, which is quite the double-whammy. That can't be an unusual opinion as it's why Nintendo still underperforms here, compared to the rest of the world, and I still have trouble recognising the current reality.
I've nothing against them but not only does it show how fortunes change but it also shows that what you assume to be common knowledge or an obvious truth can easily be you living in a bubble.

Interesting Reader's Feature about Fallout and Bethesda. Although I think he's being a little unkind I can't argue that much when it comes to Bethesda's slowness and unwillingness to change (or acknowledge everyone loves New Vegas better than their games).
I have to say it does sound very much like Todd Howard, or whoever, pushing their weight around but they've been slow now for decades, long before it became the standard. I'd also take the lack of Starfield news to mean they're starting to sweep the game under the carpet.
I 100% agree that Fallout remasters are the way to go in the short term and I think the success of Oblivion pretty much guarantees. What I'd really like though, and what would help them get into fans' good books, is a remake – not a remaster – of Morrowind. There's such a huge difference between that and everything they've put out since that I would live to see them embrace that older style of more complex, stat-based role-player again.

Superior drive
In response to Magnumstache and games for his PlayStation 3, I would suggest one of my favourite games on the console and one of my favourite games of all time, that is Test Drive Unlimited 2 (if he hasn't got it already).
Now that Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown has come out and has severely disappointed the fans, Test Drive Unlimited 2 has now absolutely solidified itself as a great game in the memories of those who played it first time around.
And despite still playing Forza Horizon 4 and 5 these days, neither (or in fact any racing game, including any of The Crew games) have come close to being better than that old Eden Games classic.

Hand off
After seeing the news about the Halo devs being unhappy about their own game it does not sound good for what used to be my favourite franchise. I think it's long past time that the game be taken out of Halo Studios' hands and given to someone else.
Much like Phil Spencer himself, I'm not sure how many years of repeated failure are needed before action is taken. I don't know what exactly is going on, and I doubt we'll ever find out, but the remake of Combat Evolved should be especially easy to farm out to someone else.
Beyond that, there's plenty of other independent developers that could be given the main game to make. Saber Interactive, for example, or even give it to one of the Call Of Duty teams. Whatever happens it can't be left to rot even further.

Two years later
When Hogwarts Legacy was originally released in 2023 your review of it sold me to get it. I am not a Harry Potter fan at all. The price of the game back in 2023 put me off it, as it was £65 and based on Harry Potter franchise. Having conversations with real life friends they said it is an excellent game and I should get it.
Before I sold my original Switch in late May I noticed a sale to buy the Switch version for £12.79. So, I did and I bought it to play on the Switch 2, as I knew Portkey were working on the Switch 2 version upgrade. So, when I bought my Switch 2 at launch I downloaded the update for £8.99 for Hogwarts Legacy.
I have just completed it now, after 109 hours of playing. Yes, it could have been completed quicker, but this kind of game is right up my street. Explore at my own leisure. No achievements to hunt, which was a blessing. Just play the game at my own pace. No stress of achievement hunting.
I can imagine some of the achievements, like probably fill the Room of Requirement. Sod that, just play the game and enjoy it, which I thoroughly did. Shame they haven't got the Star Wars licence, that would be gaming heaven. Same kind of game but with blasters and so on. Keep up the excellent work.

Old theory
I'm beginning to think that GTA 6 will be Bonnie and Clyde inspired. The two heroes will start off normal small time crooks and build to a Red Dead finale.
Would a bookie give me odds for this theory?
Bobwallett
GC: We doubt it. Not least because that was the rumour long before the official annoucement.
Growing into it
The only online, co-op or multiplayer gaming I engage in is once a week with my niece and nephew. Just not that interested in it and single-player gaming that I can get lost and absorbed in is what I enjoy.
For them, online or multiplayer is pretty much all they play. I think that's typical for kids and teenagers these days. It genuinely makes me worry for single-player gaming's future.
Maybe they'll grow into it. One of the problems is that most of the notable or worthwhile single-player games aren't really suitable for 12-year-olds.
It's not all negative though. The games they do play all have a real sense of play at the core of them. The latest they're enjoying is Ultimate Chicken Horse on Game Pass, which plays like a multiplayer Super Meat Boy with the ability to place items and hazards into the levels to trip your mates up.
They're also not obsessed with graphics, games being cross-gen or pushing the limits of the console in a way my generation seem to have grown up valuing.
I have got the boy downloading Halo: The Master Chief Collection, so we can do all the single-player campaigns co-op. Seems a good place to start to get a bit of single-player campaigning into their gaming life.

I just read that David Wise is not the composer for the new Donkey Kong Bananza game. That surprises me as he did such fantastic work on the other games.

Just found out that it's 10 years this month since Satoru Iwata passed away. Very sad but at the same but obviously Nintendo has done well anyway. Although I do wonder if they're still following his plan for Switch and now he's no longer with us there is no specific plan for the Switch 2.

Is Fortnite down? Server downtime schedule and early patch notes for Chapter 6 Season 4

Fortnite is currently in a state of downtime as Epic Games prepares to launch Chapter 6 Season 4, bringing a new era to the island The new season of Fortnite is nearly upon us, and after a significant downtime, we can expect the arrival of Halo's UNSC and the Power Rangers. ‌ A fresh chapter of Fortnite is here, and frankly, we're barely prepared. Chapter 6 Season 3, characterised by its loaded Super Battle Pass and a major Super Showdown live event, was a big hit with players as they mastered new abilities and battled through lethal Spires. It was a fantastic period for gamers, but now it's time for something different. ‌ The latest teaser confirmed several things we'd suspected for a while – not only is the bug invasion officially heading to the island, but the hinted Power Rangers and Halo crossovers were unveiled in a nostalgic trailer, along with a number of new Battle Pass skins. It's evident that this will be a season to remember, particularly with the Dino Megazord looming over the island, which will likely be hard to overlook. ‌ So, as downtime looms and threatens to lock us out, the question arises – is Fortnite down? Here's what you need to know. Introducing All Out Gaming Is Fortnite down? Fortnite downtime is scheduled to start at 11pm PDT on Wednesday, August 6, and 2am EDT / 7am BST on Thursday, August 7. This information has been confirmed by a tweet from @FortniteStatus. ‌ We can anticipate that the game will disable its matchmaking for fresh matches half an hour prior to this maintenance period beginning to guarantee that players can savour their final game of the season. The maintenance is anticipated to run for approximately five hours, judging by recent season-ending downtimes. The account followed up with a tweet adding that, "The new Season's PC update will be larger than usual Season releases," so you've been warned. Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4 early patch notes The most effective way of discovering what's heading to the game is to examine the Fortnite community Trello board, which provides players the opportunity to see exactly what the Epic Games team is developing before the fresh changes become apparent in-game. ‌ Here's everything on the Fortnite community Trello board labelled with the "Fixed in Next Game Update" tag: General The Edit Style screen may appear empty in the locker – The Edit Styles screen may not display available Styles when accessed via the Edit Styles button on the currently equipped Outfit. Penny may display incorrectly when wearing Kicks – Equipping Kicks on Penny can cause parts of the Outfit to appear distorted. Lego Fortnite Non-Legendary weapons lack runes when purchased or dropped – Common, Uncommon, Rare and Epic weapons are currently missing runes when acquired from vendors or drops. Plasma Pistols are missing the Auto Fire button (mobile) – There's no Auto Fire button when Plasma Pistols (e.g. Soliday's Plasma Pistols or Ruby Plasma Pistols) are equipped. Rocket Racing The auto-acceleration option is missing when using a controller on Mobile – When using a controller on mobile devices, the auto-acceleration option does not appear. Save the World Limited Hero/Weapon rotation on the View screen – When inspecting Heroes or Weapons on the View screen in the Command or Armory sections, players may be unable to fully rotate their models. It's a substantial pile of alterations, and whilst there are numerous new features up in the air regarding the fresh season, we at least understand that these modifications will definitely materialise. They're no Megazord, but we'll accept them.

Games Inbox: When will Switch 2 get a new 3D Mario game?

The Thursday letters page tries to predict what will be in today's Indie World Nintendo Direct, as a number of readers admit to being adult fans of Fortnite. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Your 3D Mario is in another castle In an ideal world the thing to do for the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. is a brand new 3D Super Mario or at least a big budget 2D one. But I don't see any likelihood of that happening. People have said they're probably waiting for the new movie next April, but they did exactly nothing for the last one so I'd hardly say that was a dead cert. And even if they do, I would've thought a 2D game was more likely, because that's what the majority of people going to see the film (aka parents) will be thinking of when they think Mario. There's also the fact that the 3D Mario team made Donkey Kong Bananza, so either they're not doing the next game or it's going to take years and years. I honestly think it's the second option and that it's going to be several more anniversaries until we get a follow-up to Super Mario Odyssey, which is upsetting because it's going to be nine years old next year. Yes, it's been that long. Lupin Irritating solution On top of everything else that's wrong with the games industry at the moment I get the feeling it's all going to get a lot more… awkward in the future. This GTA Online age checking system is clearly real and I'm sure it's just the start. Fortnite is technically rated 12, or at least the Battle Royale bit is, but how many parents stick to that? Imagine how irritated they're going to be when little Johnny constantly wants his dad to do the face check to let him online. I'm not even saying that online checks aren't a good idea, the problem is we don't have the technology to do it conveniently or accurately. It's easy to cheat and yet it's going to constantly get in your face, literally. There are bigger problems in the world but it's the little things that irritate and it's going to put people off. Indie darlings So what do we think is going to be at the Indie World Nintendo Direct today? Not Silksong, according to every rumour I've seen, but I'd be surprised if Hades 2 wasn't mentioned and maybe the Slay The Spire 2 early access could come to Switch 2? Maybe Blue Prince too, now that's blown up quite a bit. Clair Obsur: Expedition 33 too, probably. As I understand it, most Indie games sold best on Switch 1 so I'm hoping the Switch 2 will be a favourite too, although its sounds like that lack of devkits worldwide isn't going to help. Maybe that's why the thing is only 15 minutes long! Gorko Email your comments to: gamecentral@ New Super Mario All-Stars I will laugh (well, inwardly chuckle) if Nintendo don't celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., after making such an unnecessary fuss about the 35th. Even though we know it's fake, a compilation of the New Super Mario Bros. games does sound believable, despite them not even being very good games. My dream would be a modern equivalent of Super Mario All-Stars where you take the original three games and remake them with modern graphics. Except absolutely not the boring New Super Mario Bros. style, but something new and interesting and weird. I don't think Nintendo will put that kind of effort into it though, which is a shame. I would be surprised if we don't get some kind of compilation though. It's just easy money for them, and right before Christmas. Tacle A high tide Really enjoyed your coverage of Gradius Origins and the… hesitant return of Konami. Although, the 101 Silent Hill games and nothing for Castlevania is super strange, especially as the Silent Hill 2 remake is the only good one so far. I am relatively hopefully about Silent Hill f but a bit worried that it will have more combat in it, apparently to attract more younger players. That makes me immediately worried, when it's a game that's meant to be scary, not an action game. Curious to know if you'll be previewing it soon and how it's looking. At the end of the day, the more of their games, no matter what they are, that are successful the more they'll be willing to do more. Lambo GC: We should be seeing it at Gamescom. First person view It's interesting listening to the talk around the Switch 2. I've had it since launch with the Mario Kart bundle. I'm not a massive fan of Mario Kart but enjoyed playing for a few hours and will dip in. I've just finished Cyberpunk 2077; I've really enjoyed it, I don't usually play first person games but I've loved it and it's made me think I've missed out on some other similar great games. Any recommendations on Switch would be welcome. When the original Switch came out I had a pre-order but cancelled it due to a lack of games, I knew I would play Zelda but felt I'd wait so picked one up a couple of months later. It is without doubt my favourite console ever. The difference for me with the Switch 2 is I already have so many classic games that even if it had a quiet year I had plenty to play, especially with the online. I've got Donkey Kong Bananza to start now and I'm looking forward to Star Wars Outlaws and hopefully Metroid before Xmas and I'll be well happy for the first year. I agree the that last Direct was poor, the first one I can remember with nothing I was interested in, hopefully the indie one will be better. It may not sell like the Switch but having access to all those great games, plus most of Nintendo's back catalogue, suggests it will be my new favourite console, especially when a new Zelda and Mario land. Keep up the great work. Kineticinduction GC: Thank you. There aren't many first person games of note on the Switch 2 yet but Borderlands 4 is out in October and of course there's Metroid Prime 4 at some point later this year. Bad influence In response to Whistler's question: I will be 40 next week and have not and will never play Fortnite. As far as I'm concerned it and its success are among the worst things to happen to the video game industry. All it has done is inspire publishers to pressure its once-great studios to try and recreate this garbage and its exploitative financial model. The sooner Fortnite dies the better, but I fear that it will far outlast the rest of the gaming industry. StellarFlux Free for all In response to the email about adults and Fortnite. I would say that there is a fairly substantial adult following. I play and I'm pushing an age I dare not mention, and I play with a various other people from 20 to 50 years old. I initially never got along with it, because of the building, as it was too much for me but always thought it was well supported in terms of updates and skins. Then a few years back they added the zero build mode and I was encouraged to try, so I did. And since then it's been my go-to game. It's easy to pick up, hard to master and games don't leave you dead for too long, so when time is a premium you can just pick up and play. They also pump out skins that appeal to older folks (like RoboCop, Aliens, Knight Rider, and Star Wars) that tugs directly at the wallet. I would recommend giving it a go, it's free and fun. Wayne Inbox also-ransI'm a 47-year-old mum of two, aged 10 and 13 years old. I play Fortnite regularly. My husband and I often play together in the evenings. I started in lockdown playing altogether as a family… Rebecca Good news. I got on to the open beta for Battlefield 6. Bad news, I'm 21,000 in the queue, which started at 35,000. I don't think I'm getting on.
