‘The Friend' is a wonderful dog movie. Humans are allowed in.

Washington Post03-04-2025

'The Friend' is a better dog movie than it is a people movie, but it's such a wonderful dog movie that you may not mind that the people are merely fine.
The latest from the quixotic writer-directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel ('What Maisie Knew,' 'The Deep End') adapts Sigrid Nunez's 2018 National Book Award-winning novel about a Manhattan writer and book editor named Iris (Naomi Watts), a solitary soul who inherits a Great Dane named Apollo from her late mentor. The mentor, Walter, is played in an early scene, a number of flashbacks and one imaginary conversation by Bill Murray, and if that's a bait-and-switch given that the actor is prominently featured in the posters and previews, we'll allow it.

Masked Men Break Into Macklemore's Home, Bear-Spray Nanny While Kids Sleep

Masked Men Break Into Macklemore's Home, Bear-Spray Nanny While Kids Sleep originally appeared on Parade. Two masked men broke into rapper Macklemore's Seattle home over the weekend, deploying bear spray on a nanny and stealing thousands of dollars in valuables — all while his three children, whom he shares with wife Tricia Davis, were inside. According to a police report obtained by The Seattle Times, the home invasion occurred just before 1 a.m. Saturday at a Capitol Hill residence reportedly listed in public records as belonging to the Grammy-winning artist. Macklemore, whose legal name is Ben Haggerty, was not named in the redacted police report, but the outlet confirmed the address matched his voter registration. TMZ reported that the rapper was out of the country at the time, performing in Ireland. Seattle police were dispatched after the nanny reported that two intruders had entered the home, sprayed her with bear mace, and were still inside. According to the report, she had just put the children to bed when she saw two men enter through a patio door. One immediately sprayed her in the face with bear repellent. Despite the initial assault, the nanny told police that the man who sprayed her appeared 'fearful' and inexplicably began helping her rinse the bear spray from her eyes. The second suspect reportedly demanded valuables, shouting, "Where are the jewels, b--ch?" according to TMZ. The men then took jewelry, watches, and shoes before pushing her to the ground and taking her phone. In a separate incident report, the Seattle Police Department stated that 'thousands of dollars of items' were stolen from the home. The nanny told officers she bit one of the men before fleeing the house. She knocked on several neighbors' doors until one let her in to call 9-1-1. The suspects were later seen fleeing the scene, according to the police report. Thankfully, all three children were unharmed and were placed in the care of family members following the incident. The Grammy-winning singer kicked off her June 10 show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium around 7:41 p.m. local time. The show marked her third of six shows at the stadium on her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. She is set to hit the stage again June 12, 14 and 16, before heading to Paris for three nights. 'We're gonna have us a good time tonight,' Beyoncé said as she opened the show. WWE RAW superstar Zoey Stark has revealed the full extent of the brutal knee injury she suffered during the May 19th episode of RAW. In a video posted to social media, Stark confirmed she underwent major surgery to repair a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. The video showed the moment she was injured during a triple-threat qualifying match for Money in the Bank. Stark landed awkwardly after attempting a missile dropkick and had to be carried out of the arena by WWE medical personnel. Unfortunately, this is familiar territory for Stark, who was sidelined with a similar knee injury in late 2021 while in NXT. That injury also required surgery and kept her out of action for approximately nine months. Before this latest setback, Stark had been the last remaining member of the "Pure Fusion Collective" faction on RAW. Her partners, Shayna Baszler and Sonya Deville, had both been released by WWE earlier in 2025. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation Stark first signed with WWE in 2021 and found early success in NXT, winning the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship with Io Shirai (now IYO SKY). After being called up to the main roster in the 2023 WWE Draft, she was immediately placed in a high-profile storyline. COLOGNE, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 07: A WWE Logo at the WWE Live Tryout at the Motorworld on November 7, 2018 in Cologne, served as the enforcer for WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus during her heated feud with Becky Lynch. Stark played a crucial role in that program, helping Stratus in major matches at Night of Champions and Payback. Stark's recent video update noted that her surgery, originally scheduled for two hours, ultimately took three and a half hours to complete. The video ended by teasing a further update, promising that fans will find out "What's next for Zoey Stark?" on the June 16th episode of RAW. Stark is someone who is liked within the locker room and a solid in-ring worker. Once she's back, hopefully, she returns to full strength and can continue to build on her career while on the main roster. It will be interesting to see if she gets a renewed push once she's back in action and what brand she will end up on once she returns. We wish her a speedy recovery.
