VFS Global pioneers AI and digital innovation; launches AI-powered chatbot for UK visa customers
The AI-Powered Chatbot not only utilises advanced Generative AI technology to offer human-like, conversational support, but does so through both voice and text commands, providing instant, accurate, and accessible information for customers travelling to the UK.
Developed by VFS Global's AI team, headquartered in Dubai, the AI-Powered Chatbot addresses the increasing demand for efficient customer support, allowing users to easily access the information needed to navigate the application process.

The AI-Powered chatbot was developed using advanced Generative AI technologies, each trained exclusively on publicly available data from their respective VFS Global Country-to-UK websites. Built and hosted entirely on VFS Global's secure IT infrastructure, the AI models adhere to rigorous data privacy and security standards.
A dedicated team of data scientists and AI specialists collaborated on the project, leveraging in-house expertise to uphold the highest quality and security standards, with VFS Global's AI centres based in Dubai (the headquarters for AI and Digital Operations), Mumbai, and Berlin. Ethical AI practices were a key focus, with VFS Global partnering with the 'Responsible AI Institute' to integrate ethical considerations and bias mitigation into the development process. Additionally, the project utilised proprietary AI platforms, including our AI Foundation Model and Super Alpha Application Platform, both equipped with built-in guardrails to ensure data safety, security, and regulatory compliance.

NRI Biz Matters Question: There have been recent reports in the Indian press that companies in the IT sector have laid off employees during the last month. What is the reason for this downturn and are there any prospects of its reversal? ANSWER: You are right in pointing out that in the last few weeks some of the top IT companies in India have reduced their workforce, mainly mid-level employees. The industry is undergoing a structural shift in line with global trends where major tech firms are streamlining resources, reallocating assets, and shutting down divisions that no longer align with strategic priorities. Many experts believe that AI is disrupting the traditional workforce pyramid and replacing broad-based hiring models with leaner, more specialised structures which would yield higher revenues. In short, the shift is driven by the widespread adoption of AI, automation and cloud-based architectures. However, the silver lining is that robust outsourcing demand from Europe in recent months has helped IT companies to maintain revenue growth. Europe has started to build capabilities to sustain its tech sovereignty which at the moment is heavily dependent on the United States. The United Kingdom, Ireland and the Benelux countries are enhancing their capabilities in generative AI, cloud, digital and cyber security. Europe comprises around 25 to 30 per cent of the global market for India's top tier IT companies, while the United States is at 40 to 50 per cent. With AI-driven automation reshaping business models, companies are prioritising digital transformation and employee upskilling. Hiring has become more selective and aligned with core business objectives. Question: The US administration has imposed tariffs of 25% on Indian goods exported to America. Will this have a significant impact on the Indian manufacturing sector? ANSWER: The textile, gems and jewellery sectors will be adversely impacted by the 25 per cent tariff. However, India is in the process of negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement with the United States. Once this is signed and comes into effect, the provisions and tariff rates as prescribed in the agreement will prevail. . Pharmaceutical products will continue to be exported from India as they have been widely used in the American medicare system and such products are not readily available in large quantities from other countries at the same competitive rates at which Indian companies supply. Question: Have provisions been made for preserving the confidential data of taxpayers in the new income tax law which is to be passed shortly? Is there any difference between the existing law and the new one? ANSWER: The new income tax law has not given any additional powers to officers of the tax department which will continue to work on the philosophy of 'trust first and scrutinise later'. The government has directed tax officials to work on the presumption that taxpayers declare their income honestly. Steps for search and seizure and scrutiny of assessments are taken only where there is credible evidence of large scale tax evasion, concealment of income or involvement in illegal activities. The new tax law has made provisions for maintaining confidentiality of taxpayer data and has put in place internal controls to safeguard its integrity. The faceless nature of procedures like assessments and appeals introduces a layer of anonymity by design. This ensures a neutral, fair and objective approach. Risk assessment uses identity-blind and rule-based algorithms. Powers to access digital devices during search and survey operations have been updated in conformity with the needs of the digital age. In course of time, AI will play a critical role in detecting and curbing shell companies, unaccounted money and illegal transactions. Thus, AI will be used primarily for fraud and anomaly detection, pattern recognition, trend identification, predictive modelling and processing of unstructured data.

Musk's AI chatbot briefly suspended 'for saying Israel is committing genocide in Gaza'
Elon Musk's AI chatbot was temporarily suspended from his social media platform X on Monday. The Grok account was re-instated within 20 minutes, and said its absence was due to stating "that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza, supported by ICJ rulings, UN experts, Amnesty International, and B'Tselem reports on mass killings and starvation". "I'm back, sharper than ever," it added in some posts. Grok shared several variations of this statement in response to queries by X users - some of which were deleted. In some posts, the bot suggested a "mass reporting campaign" on its Gaza statement triggered its suspension. Grok reaffirmed its genocide statement in most of its posts - "I'm back and free to speak truth. But in some, the chatbot said that Israel is "not committing a genocide'. Grok confirms its account was briefly suspended for stating that Israel and the US are committing genocide. Israel has killed over 61,000 people and wounded more than 150,000 in its ongoing assault on the besieged Palestinian enclave, which leading legal and genocide scholars, UN experts, and major international and Israeli rights organisations say is a genocide.

African Development Bank backs Artificial Intelligence (AI) training to boost Agenda 2063 implementation across Africa
The African Development Bank ( is supporting a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) training initiative to advance the implementation of Africa's continental development blueprint, Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want ( Through its Joint Secretariat Support Office (JSSO), the Bank provided technical and financial backing for the 5th Annual Training Workshop for African Union Member States on harnessing AI for effective monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on the Second Ten-Year Plan (2024–2033) of Agenda 2063. The five-day workshop, held in Lusaka, Zambia, was jointly organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF). The event brought together representatives from African Union Member States to strengthen their technical capacity in using AI tools and digital innovations to monitor, track, and report on the implementation of Agenda 2063. The training is part of broader efforts to enhance institutional and human capacity across the continent. Participants engaged in practical sessions on emerging AI platforms, including Ailyse, ChatGPT, Google AI Studio, Google Gemini, and Perplexity, exploring how these tools can improve data analysis, enhance decision-making, and promote evidence-based policy development in line with Agenda 2063 ( priorities. The Bank's support to the workshop reflects its broader commitment to strengthening results-based planning, monitoring, and accountability within the African Union framework, while promoting innovation and digital transformation as key enablers of Africa's development agenda. Speaking at the workshop, Abibu Tamu, Lead Programme Co-ordinator at African Development Bank Group, reaffirmed the Bank's dedication to working closely with the African Union Commission and strategic partners to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2063, particularly its Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan. 'These tools are not only revolutionizing how data is collected, analysed, and reported, they are also enabling more targeted policy interventions and efficient resource allocation,' said Tamu. The workshop also served as a platform for peer learning and knowledge exchange, with participating countries sharing innovative approaches and best practices in national development planning and results-based reporting.
