Watch a Toyota Corolla Take a Surprise Jump After Extreme Heat Wrecks a Road
The idea of jumping a car sounds fun and exciting to many, but few people are prepared for something like that when it happens unintentionally. One unsuspecting driver in Missouri this week found out when their Toyota Corolla suddenly and without warning became the star of an airborne action stunt—all because of an unprecedented heat wave gripping most of the country.
With our weather only getting hotter, it seems, one side effect that easily goes unnoticed is the deterioration of roadways. Sure, everyone's familiar with potholes that spring up after winter, when water that snakes into pavement cracks freezes and thaws, wreaking havoc on the road surface. But heat is equally bad for streets and highways, as you can see in this jump-tastic video from ABC News .
In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the heat this week is sweltering enough that as you can see in the video above, a road suddenly buckles—just as a Toyota Corolla approaches. Within seconds, you hear a pop, and the roadway instantly becomes a sort of ramp. The force of the road morphing into that ramp is enough to shoot a nearby traffic cone into the air, just missing a passing Honda Accord. Meanwhile, the incoming Corolla's driver can't react in time and drives over the newly reformed road without slowing down. They catch righteous air.
The Toyota sails briefly before landing nose first and ricocheting back up for a second, violent bounce. We don't see what happens to the driver after that, but there surely is going to be some damage to the front of that Corolla.
We do see the aftermath of the roadway, a section of which is now tall enough to be nearly equal to the lower doors of a newer Nissan Altima seen on the video while an older version of the same car is stopped just ahead of the buckled roadway for an unknown reason. Sad to say, but this is potentially what could be awaiting all our daily drives amid extreme heat events in places that don't typically experience such temperatures. In other words, as summers get hotter, our roadways and bridges are in danger of more and novel damage.

Toyota also lends its facilities for car testing, giving Haas infrastructure and money in its racing pursuits. In return, Haas grants several Toyota-affiliated drivers tests with its cars. Ryo Hirakawa is one of the drivers who was given opportunities with Haas. He is the team's reserve driver for this season and has already gotten two free practice runs. In an interview with Autosport, Tsuboi explained why he believes an F1 test is in his future. "Before I won the Super Formula title, I wasn't really thinking about anything beyond that as I didn't think I'd have other options as long as I didn't win it," Tsuboi told Autosport. "But getting the double title means I've won everything I can in Japanese racing and I can start to consider more possibilities. "Lately Toyota has entered into a partnership with Haas in F1, and it seems the environment is starting to take shape where I could have the chance to drive an F1 car and take part in some testing. "Becoming an F1 driver has been my dream since I was a kid, so I definitely want to drive an F1 car at least once." Tsuboi is riding a wave of belief after capturing the Japanese racing double. His hopes of one day racing in F1 went up after his success this past season, along with Toyota's resurgence in F1. "Of course, my dream was always to succeed as an F1 driver," Tsuboi added. "Winning the double title means it was a year that I took a step towards that goal. "Until that point, it really felt just like a pipe dream, something that I would never be able to grasp, and that I just had to focus on the thing that was right in front of me. That meant my only goal was becoming Super Formula champion. "Winning the championship allowed me to have a new goal beyond that, and the idea of having a chance in F1 as part of Toyota has become a big motivation for me, so I would like to aim for that." While a full-time drive may never come to fruition, Tsuboi should get a chance to drive an F1 soon, and it will come well-deserved, given his racing success. Apple's more immersive CarPlay is dividing the auto industry
Apple's next-generation CarPlay is splitting the auto world down the middle. Several automakers are eagerly lining up to adopt the newly immersive CarPlay Ultra, which takes over more screens and includes embedded vehicle features like speedometers, heating and cooling, and radio functions. Others are flatly refusing to allow it, while the rest are taking a wait-and-see approach. All this comes courtesy of a report in the Financial Times, which previews Apple's rough road ahead as it pushes adoption for its splashy, more demanding phone projection system. As The Verge reported back in 2022, when Apple first revealed its more expansive CarPlay, most automakers were hesitant to commit to letting CarPlay gobble up all the screens in their cars. And unsurprisingly many are still wary of handing over too much real estate to the tech giant. Here's where each of the automakers currently stands on CarPlay Ultra: We're still missing some big ones, like Volkswagen and Toyota, two of the biggest automakers in the world. I've reached out to both and will update this post if I hear back. CarPlay Ultra is a huge challenge for the auto industry. Multiple surveys show that customers love it, frequently use it over their car's embedded systems, and would be less likely to buy a future vehicle that didn't allow CarPlay. But automakers are spending huge sums of money on developing next-generation software systems that allow over-the-air updates and address their customers' appetite for more digital services. And they're reluctant to just let Apple slap their own software on top of that. Sources tell the Financial Times that automakers are eager to set clear standards about data sharing with Apple before agreeing to allow CarPlay Ultra.

Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial Is the Back-to-Basics SUV We Want
Toyota has turned the Land Cruiser into a commercial work vehicle for the United Kingdom. The Land Cruiser Commercial ditches the rear seats, slaps steel panels over the rear windows, and packs a stout diesel engine and permanent four-wheel drive. Sadly, this practical-minded Land Cruiser will be offered exclusively in the United Kingdom. While the previous-generation Land Cruiser sold in the United States was a pricey, luxurious off-roader, the latest Land Cruiser offered stateside is actually akin to the smaller Land Cruiser Prado sold overseas, bearing a tougher, more practical personality. Now, in the United Kingdom, Toyota is taking that capability-first approach even further, launching a new bare-bones Land Cruiser Commercial model that gets back to the SUV's workhorse roots. The Land Cruiser Commercial is converted from the passenger-carrying version and is virtually indistinguishable from the outside, but steel panels instead of rear windows are a dead giveaway to the SUV's utilitarian purpose. Toyota says this version of the Land Cruiser is targeted at workers who need to be able to get off the beaten path but don't need the open-bed abilities of the Hilux pickup. Toyota UK Inside, Toyota rips out the rear seats and installs a full-height metal bulkhead with a mesh section up top. A heavy-duty load tray sits behind this divider, and the Land Cruiser Commercial has a cargo capacity of 71 cubic feet. That's far less space than a commercial van—such as the compact Proace City that Toyota sells in Europe—but the Land Cruiser is vastly more capable over rough terrain. The Land Cruiser can also tow over 7500 pounds. We bet the Land Cruiser would have looked pretty cool on a set of steelies, but Toyota kept the commercial model looking more stylish with grey 18-inch alloy wheels. While the Land Cruiser Commercial is a workhorse, it still packs many of the same comfort and safety features as standard LCs. The Toyota Safety Sense package is present, including blind-spot monitors and parking sensors at the front and rear, and the SUV also includes a power-adjustable driver's seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and automatic dual-zone climate control. The rear hatch is power operated, and even the seats and steering wheel are heated. That's quite a bit of content for a work vehicle. The dashboard features a nine-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Toyota UK Under the hood lives a diesel 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine—not offered in the U.S.—paired with an eight-speed automatic and permanent four-wheel drive. For navigating unpaved roads, the Land Cruiser comes with Crawl Control, Hill-Start Assist Control, and Downhill Assist Control. Toyota says it will later add a 48-volt hybrid system to the diesel engine in the European-spec Land Cruiser, including the commercial variant. The Land Cruiser Commercial is, right now, offered exclusively in the U.K. in a single five-door, long-wheelbase configuration, with the conversion completed at Toyota's manufacturing facility in Burnaston, Derbyshire, England. The Land Cruiser Commercial goes on sale in the U.K. this fall. Sadly, we doubt we'll ever see anything like it in the U.S., and while the current Land Cruiser sold here is already more down-to-earth than the previous model, we will still yearn for a back-to-basics SUV like Land Cruiser Commercial.
