Chicago Bulls, coach Billy Donovan agree to contract extension, per report
Donovan, who has been the Bulls' coach since 2020-21, is 195-205 in his five seasons with Chicago and is entering his 11th season as NBA coach, spending his first five seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Bulls were 39-43 last season and finished in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. They lost to the Miami Heat in the play-in game. Chicago has been to the playoffs once under Donovan – a first-round loss to Milwaukee after going 46-36 in 2021-22.
Donovan won two NCAA men's basketball national titles at Florida in 2006 and 2007 and played in a Final Four in 2014. He took the Oklahoma City job in 2015 and has been in the NBA since.
Why did Billy Donovan get a contract extension?
The Bulls like stability, and Donovan provides that with his coaching and relationships with players, front office and ownership. Donovan enjoys coaching in the NBA and living in Chicago.
The two sides have been working on extension for months, and at the trade deadline in February, Donovan told reporters, "I want to be part of building something."
The New York Knicks requested permission to speak with Donovan about their previously open head coaching position but were denied.
Which direction are the Bulls headed?
As the Eastern Conference improves with teams such as the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic moving toward deep playoff runs alongside Cleveland, New York, Indiana, Milwaukee and Boston, the Bulls seem stuck in neutral. They were 39-43 in 2023-24 and 40-42 in 2022-23.
They have tried to make playoff runs with DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Nik Vucevic, Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball. Injuries, especially Ball missing two seasons, derailed Chicago's plans, and only Vucevic remains on the roster.
Chicago has young talent it is trying to develop, including Matas Buzelis, the No. 11 pick in the 2024 draft, and Noa Essengue, the No. 12 pick in the 2025 draft. They are also working to bring back restricted free agent Josh Giddey on a long-term deal.

(Photo by) I know it has been nearly a month since it happened, but I still cannot stop thinking about how great an addition it was for the New York Knicks to sign Guerschon Yabusele. We'll get to the specifics in just a moment. But here is the short of it: he addresses one of their most pressing issues, helps bolster a strategy that worked well for them last postseason, and came to them at an absolute bargain compared to his actual production. Yabusele Gives The Knicks Bench Some Much Needed Depth While it turned out that their bench wasn't as terrible as Tom Thibodeau's Machiavellian treatment of the starters would suggest, they still didn't have much bite once the starters left the floor. Last season, the Knicks ranked dead-last in bench points per game, and based on the chart below, it wasn't even close: Yabusele will step in and immediately become their bullpen's best reliever. According to Estimated Plus-Minus (arguably the best one-number metric on the market because it incorporates tracking data), Yabusele placed in the 84th percentile in the entire league on the offensive side of the ball (per Dunks & Threes). That ranks higher than any non-starter from last year's Knicks team. Heck, that ranks higher than everyone not named Jalen Brunson or Karl-Anthony Towns. Yabusele Lets The Knicks Play More Double Big Lineups One of the biggest leaguewide storylines from last season was the re-emergence of double big lineups. All across the league, teams were having success with two titans in the frontcourt. The Knicks were not immune to this trend, as they posted a net rating of +8.3 in the 165 minutes that Towns and Mitchell Robinson shared the floor (per PBP Stats). For those who aren't hyper familiar with Yabusele's game, he is like the Diet Coke version of Towns. He's a big man who can hit triples (38%), put the ball on the floor (97th percentile true shooting on drives, per and offer some playmaking/passing (52nd percentile Passer Rating). Even a lesser version of this player archetype is incredibly valuable because it allows your team to go double big alongside a traditional center (i.e., Robinson) without sacrificing floor spacing. Yabusele gives the Knicks another key to unlocking their best lineup. Now, the Knicks have more lineup versatility/flexibility in the event that one of Towns/Robinson is injured or gets into foul trouble. Yabusele's Contract Is A Steal For The Knicks Yabusele signed with the Knicks for a little less than the full taxpayer mid-level exception. To be exact, his average annual value (AAV) over the next two years will be 5.6 million dollars (per Spotrac). However, based on my formula for estimating production value, if Yabusele can emulate his numbers from 2024-25, he will be worth roughly 14.1 million dollars in 2025-26. That difference of 8.5 million dollars makes him one of the five best value signings of the offseason thus far (to see the rest of those contracts, be sure to check out this link here). With most of their assets tied up in their formidable starting five, the Knicks faced a nearly impossible mission: trying to improve a bench with limited resources to do so. To be fair, the job still isn't finished (insert Kobe Bryant snippet). The Knicks could use one more two-way wing to complete their ten-man rotation (they would do well to re-sign Landry Shamet or sign Amir Coffey). But if this does end up being it for them, the Knicks did a great job adding a perfect-fitting piece to a team that came two wins away from the NBA Finals.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ben Brown pitched five effective innings, Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs topped the Chicago White Sox 5-4 on Sunday. Nico Hoerner added two hits and a key defensive play as the Cubs won the rubber game in the weekend set. The North Siders went 5-1 in the season series against the South Siders. The Cubs (62-43) began the day in a tie with Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central. They open a three-game series against the Brewers on Monday night. Andrew Benintendi homered twice and drove in four runs for the White Sox (38-68), who finished with three errors. Brown (5-7) got his first win since June 17. The right-hander went 1-4 with an 8.10 ERA in his previous five appearances. The Cubs jumped in front in the first against Grant Taylor (0-2). Crow-Armstrong picked up a two-run double on a well-placed grounder up the third base line. The Cubs added a valuable insurance run in the eighth, opening a 5-1 lead. Mitchell's 35 points lift Fever over Sky 93-78; Clark and Reese sit out
CHICAGO (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell hit seven 3-pointers and scored 35 points and the Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 93-78 in a marquee matchup on Sunday that was missing stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Clark missed her fourth-straight game for Indiana with a groin injury and has only played in half of the team's games and Reese was out for her second straight for the Sky with a back issue. Aliyah Boston had 14 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Fever (14-12), who have three double-figure wins over Chicago this season. Makayla Timpson had 14 points off the bench and Aari McDonald added 10. Mitchell had her 100th career 20-point game, second in franchise history behind Tamika Catchings, and her ninth 30-point game. She also picked up her 200th career steal and the Fever turned 23 turnovers into 31 points. Rachel Banham had six 3s and 26 points for the Sky (7-18).
