Brian O'Driscoll gives behind-the-scenes details of viral Michael Cheika moment

Ireland legend Brian O'Driscoll has revealed all when it came to the viral clip that appeared to show Michael Cheika lambast the former centre.
Ex-Leinster boss Cheika is now in charge of the Leicester Tigers and appeared to be on the war path during the Premiership final between the side and Bath.
The Aussie boss was on the sideline and looked to have taken exception to an on field decision and with O'Driscoll nearby then said something to his former player.
"I've seen this look before!" O'Driscoll joked on TNT Sports' live coverage. "When my mother comes over to me to tell me I've left the immersion on! I didn't give away the penalty; he was actually having a word with one of his staff members behind me, and I was in the firing line. I'm not exactly sure what it was, but he was a bit exasperated. The whole bench in front of us was very annoyed that the penalty wasn't given to them."
After that was cleared up, O'Driscoll further explained what happened, and revealed all about a text message he received from Cheika after the game.
Speaking on Off The Ball, he said: "It was a sunny day, I was entitled to have my shades on and next thing, Cheiks comes running down from the box and there's a bad call on Montoya who got penalised for hands in the ruck and it looked as though it was a perfectly good poach.
'Anyway, Chieks was kind of pulling some of his staff away from talking to the fourth official, but making a point of pulling him away, saying to 'ignore them, they're useless', blah blah.
'He was kind of roaming around, and then another one of his staff was standing behind me ,and he came over and started giving out about the referee to him, but it almost looked as though it was to me as well.
'It was like I haven't done anything'and I could see the camera panning to us and I didn't know it was on us for as long as it was, but I just started laughing then.'
"His wife sent it to him after the game and then he immediately sent it on to me, saying 'I'm glad we're still making memories out there, man',"
Cheika coached O'Driscoll and Leinster to a Heineken Cup in 2009 as well as a Celtic League title (now the URC).

Sky pundit angers fans after calling Keith Andrews 'British'

Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson triggered a familiar nerve among Ireland fans on Saturday. Dawson mistakenly labelled Keith Andrews as 'British' while discussing how he might get on as the new Brentford boss. Andrews, who earned 35 caps for Ireland during his playing days, endured a 3-1 defeat away to Nottingham Forest in his first game as a Premier League manager. Michael Dawson sparked fury among Ireland fans. Pic: Visionhaus/Getty Images During the pre-match discussion on Sky Sports, Dawson remarked that Andrews getting the nod to replace Thomas Frank at Brentford was a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League'. Unsurprisingly, the ex-Hull City defender's comment sparked a bit of irritation among Irish football fans and they made sure to vent their frustration on social media. One user wrote: 'Michael Dawson referred to Keith Andrews as a 'British manager' on Sky Sports today. Thought Sky Sports like to educate people on this matter or maybe that's just for the Irish women's team. Dawson and Sky Sports, clowns.' Another said: 'FYI Michael Dawson: Keith Andrews is Irish, not British! What is it about Sky Sports News getting things like that wrong?' A third added: 'Michael Dawson just said with reference to Keith Andrews that it's great to see a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League'. Daft in this day and age really.' One other person saw the lighter side of it and quipped: 'We need Clinton Morrison to start calling the likes of Eddie Howe Irish.' Andrews will no doubt have more to worry about than pundits getting his nationality wrong after his opening day anguish against Forest. There were question marks about the Dubliner's appointment at the club with fans immediately presuming his lack of experience won't get him far. Andrews joined Brentford in July 2024 as a set-piece coach and was promoted to the major role after Thomas Frank's departure this summer. However, conceding from a corner five minutes into his first match set an ominous tone for a new manager whose specialty was set-pieces. Andrews has had a tough start at Brentford. Pic:Fans have not held back their criticism of the 44-year-old online. One said: 'Keith Andrews will be the first PL manager sacked this season. Completely out of his depth and everyone knew it back in June when he was appointed.' Another wrote: 'Get Keith Andrews the f*** out of here. An absolute joke of an appointment by Brentford. Feel sorry for their players and fans.' A third simply added: 'Brentford are playing like a team managed by Keith Andrews.' In fairness to Andrews, he was handed a pretty nightmarish task replacing Frank at the club. Not only did the long-serving boss depart but Brentford also lost two key players with star man Bryan Mbeumo moving to Manchester United and captain Christian Norgaard heading to Arsenal. On top of these, talented striker Yoane Wissa is heavily linked with a move to Newcastle and is essentially unavailable for selection until the move is complete. A couple of fans shared sympathy for Andrews, understanding the immediate obstacles thrust upon him. One fan said: 'Felt sorry for Keith Andrews. He clearly wanted Wissa in his squad and in his team today but he's obviously not in the right frame of mind after being tapped up. He wants the situation sorted. I don't understand why Newcastle don't just pay the asking price and get it over with.' Another agreed: 'Keith Andrews looked gutted today. He really wanted Wissa to play … it could have made a big difference. Now he has to replace him, so selling him quickly is a must.'

A deep dive of Celtic's highs and lows in the Champions League playoffs

Celtic are gearing up to battle it out with Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan in the play-off round of the Champions League this week, aiming to secure their place in the prestigious tournament. However, history suggests that the Hoops' chances of clearing the final qualification hurdle could be touch and go. Despite Brendan Rodgers' team having automatically entered the group stages of Europe's top competition for the past three seasons, Scotland's dip in the UEFA co-efficient rankings means they now face a two-legged tie to reach the revamped group stage, which has been transformed into an eight-game league format. The Premiership champions will host Kairat at Parkhead on Wednesday before embarking on a 3,536-mile journey to Asia for the return leg six days later - a familiar scenario as they've previously faced Kazakhstani rivals at this stage twice before. While Celtic have triumphed over rivals from the nation on two occasions, Rodgers will be keen to maintain that winning streak and avoid making unwanted history, reports the Daily Record. Indeed, there are plenty of lessons to be learned for the boss, as Celtic have participated in the play-off round of the Champions League 11 times over the years, experiencing a rollercoaster of fortunes. Record Sport delves into Celtic's history in the fixture as fans once again dare to dream of rubbing shoulders with Europe's finest. Astana (Kazakhstan) – 2017. (Image: Action Images via Reuters) Interestingly, the last time Celtic participated in the Champions League play-off round was also against a team from Kazakhstan, during Rodgers' initial tenure in Glasgow's East End. After trouncing Linfield 6-0 over two legs and narrowly defeating Rosenborg of Norway on aggregate in the third qualifying round, Celtic faced off against Astana for a spot in the group stages in the 2017/18 season. The Celts stormed to a 5-0 home victory in the first leg, with Scott Sinclair scoring twice, before suffering a 4-3 defeat in the return match, which saw them advance 8-4 on aggregate. The Hoops ended up finishing third in a group that included Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich - notably losing 7-1 to the former - before moving into the Europa League, where they were knocked out in the round of 32 by Zenit St Petersburg, losing 3-1 over two legs. Hapoel Be'er Sheva (Israel) – 2016. A year prior, Rodgers secured Champions League group stage football in his debut season at Parkhead after a close call against Hapoel Be'er Sheva. The Hoops secured a 3-2 aggregate win against Astana in the previous round, setting up a play-off clash with the Israeli side. They achieved a comfortable 5-2 victory at Celtic Park - with captain Scott Brown rounding off the scoring - but found themselves desperately holding onto that lead when Hapoel went 2-0 up in the return match, needing just one more goal to eliminate Celtic on away goals. Luckily, Rodgers' team managed to hold on and ended up at the bottom of a tough group that included Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Mochengladbach. They notably played out a 2-2 draw with the Premier League giants under the Glasgow lights. Malmo (Sweden) – 2015. However, this triumph was preceded by a disappointing performance against Malmo in the previous season, where Celtic stumbled at the final hurdle in Champions League qualifying. Ronny Deila's squad easily dispatched Icelandic minnows Stjarnan before narrowly overcoming Qarabag of Azerbaijan to face the Swedish side. Despite winning the first leg 3-2 at home, Celtic were knocked out when they lost 2-0 in the return match, with defender Dedrick Boyata scoring the decisive own goal. Their performance in the Europa League group stages wasn't much better, failing to secure a win in any of their six matches against Molde, Fenerbahce and Ajax, ending up at the bottom of the group. Maribor (Slovenia) – 2014. Deila's attempt to reach the Champions League promised land also ended in failure in his first of two seasons at the helm. Celtic thrashed RK Reykjavik of Iceland 5-0 over two legs but set themselves a difficult task by losing 4-1 in Poland to Legia Warsaw in the next round. Deila's team initially suffered a 2-0 defeat at home, but were later awarded a 3-0 victory that saw them advance on away goals after UEFA ruled that Legia had fielded an ineligible player. However, their journey ended in the play-off round, succumbing to Slovenian side Maribor with a 1-0 loss at Parkhead, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg on foreign turf. The Europa League provided some solace for the Norwegian, as Celtic progressed from the group stages before being commendably knocked out by Inter Milan in the knockout phase. Shakhter Karagandy (Kazakhstan) – 2013. Celtic triumphed in the Champions League play-off 12 months earlier under Neil Lennon, but it required a stunning comeback. The Hoops found themselves 2-0 down to Kazakh side Karagandy going into the return leg at Parkhead, having previously overcome Cliftonville and Elfsborg to reach the play-off. Goals from Kris Commons and Georgios Samaras levelled the score before James Forrest netted the vital winner in injury time, just as the match seemed destined for extra time. Celtic then struggled in the group stage, losing five of their six matches in a group of death with AC Milan, Barcelona and Ajax, resulting in an early departure. Helsingborgs (Sweden) – 2012. Progression to the group stage was a far simpler task at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Lennon's lads secured a 4-1 aggregate victory against HJK Helsinki, followed by a 2-0 win in both legs against Sweden's Helsingborgs, earning their spot amongst Europe's top teams. This journey turned out to be one of the most memorable in recent times, with a notable 2-1 triumph over Barcelona propelling them to the round of 16. However, they were defeated by Turin giants Juventus in two matches that Efe Ambrose will forever be trying to forget. Arsenal (England) – 2009 The next time Celtic graced the Champions League play-off was three years later when they faced a challenging draw against Arsenal. The Celts managed to edge past Dynamo Moscow to set up the clash with the Gunners, but Arsene Wenger's team proved too strong, securing a 2-0 victory at Parkhead and wrapping things up with a 3-1 win in North London. Spartak Moscow (Russia) – 2007. Two years prior, Celtic's bid to enter the competition came down to a penalty shootout. Back-to-back 1-1 draws against Spartak Moscow led to a nail-biting penalty shootout, with the Parkhead club advancing after netting four of their five penalties against Spartak's three. The campaign turned out to be a memorable one, with Gordon Strachan leading the team to impressive home victories against AC Milan and Benfica, securing a last 16 place against Barcelona. Unfortunately, Celtic were defeated 4-2 on aggregate. MTK Hungaria (Hungary) – 2003. Chris Sutton heads home against MTK Hungaria in the Champions League qualifier in 2003 Martin O'Neill's Celtic team secured their place in the Champions League play-off during the 2003/04 season after a comprehensive thrashing of MTK Hungaria. The Scottish giants had previously defeated Lithuanian side FBK with an aggregate score of 5-0, and repeated this feat against the Hungarians to reach the group stage. Despite narrowly missing out on a spot in the knockout stage, they made it to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals before being defeated by Villareal with an aggregate score of 3-1. In 2002, Celtic suffered a Champions League play-off exit at the hands of Basel, which was quickly followed by the club's memorable run to the UEFA Cup final. Despite squandering a 3-1 lead at home and suffering a 2-0 defeat in Switzerland, they dropped into the second-tier competition and made it all the way to Seville. This was achieved through impressive victories over Stuttgart, Premier League teams Liverpool and Blackburn, and Boavista of Portugal. An incredible 80,000 fans travelled to Spain for the final against Porto, but it ended in disappointment for Celtic as Jose Mourinho's exceptional team lifted the trophy following a 3-2 win after extra time. In 2001, Celtic managed to reach the group stage after overcoming Dutch heavyweights Ajax. They secured a valuable 3-1 victory in Amsterdam thanks to goals from Chris Sutton, Didier Agathe and Bobby Petta, and despite a 1-0 loss at home in the second leg, they progressed from the play-off. O'Neill's squad clinched three victories out of their five group matches, including memorable wins against Porto and Juventus. However, they were unlucky not to progress to the knockout stages, instead falling into the third round of the UEFA Cup where they endured a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Rafa Benitez's Valencia.
