Two-year deal gives Cristiano Ronaldo a chance to reach 1,000 career goals
Here, the PA news agency looks at the Portugal international and former Real Madrid and Manchester United star's record of 938 goals to date for club and country.
International record-breaker
Ronaldo is the record men's international goalscorer (Bradley Collyer/PA)
– Ronaldo has the most goals in men's international football with 138. He passed Iran's Ali Daei's previous record of 108 in June 2021.
– His 221 caps are also a record number, going past Bader Al Mutawa's 196 for Kuwait in March 2023.
– Ronaldo, Lionel Messi (112) and Daei are the only men with a century of international goals, while Ronaldo alone has reached 200 caps.
– Minnows Luxembourg are his favourite opponent, with 11 goals.
Club football
Cristiano Ronaldo has been a prolific scorer for Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid (Martin Rickett/Nick Potts/Joe Giddens/PA)
– Ronaldo is Real Madrid's record goalscorer with 450, almost 100 clear of second-placed Karim Benzema (354).
– He scored those goals in just 438 appearances, giving him a ratio better than a goal per game and an average of exactly 50 in each of his nine seasons. He scored 61 in all competitions in 2014-15 and just one fewer in 2011-12.
– Another 145 goals came across his two spells with Manchester United, 118 in his first after joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 and 27 after returning in 2021.
– Ronaldo's most prolific United season came in 2007-08, winning the Premier League Golden Boot with 31 goals and scoring 42 in all competitions.
– He holds the records for most goals and appearances in the UEFA Champions League, 141 goals in 187 games. He, Messi and Robert Lewandowski are the only players with 100-plus goals in the competition.
– Ronaldo is the only player to score in three Champions League finals, and also holds records of 17 goals in a season (2013-14) and scoring in 11 successive appearances.
– He netted five goals in all competitions for his first club Sporting Lisbon and 101 in three seasons with Juventus. His last goal of last season was his 800th in club football and his first of the new campaign will be his 100th for Al Nassr.
Honours
Ronaldo poses with the Ballon d'Or before a game
– Ronaldo has won a record five UEFA Champions League titles, four with Real after winning his first with United in 2008.
– He has won the Ballon d'Or, awarded to the world's best player, five times – a total exceeded only by Argentina star Messi's eight. Ronaldo was awarded a special award for outstanding career achievement at the 2021 FIFA Best Awards.
– His 26 major honours also include seven domestic league titles, three in England with United and two each in Spain and Italy. With Portugal, he won Euro 2016 as well as two Nations League titles.
– Ronaldo has won the European Golden Shoe on four occasions and was top scorer at Euro 2020. The 40-year-old's 938 career goals have come in 1,281 senior appearances, with Portugal age-group and Olympic games excluded.

Former Man United star 'set to sign for Burnley' as a free agent in return to the Premier League after his side were relegated last season
A former Manchester United star is returning to the Premier League with Burnley after his side were relegated last season. The Clarets will return to the top flight this season after just one year away, with Scott Parker leading them back to second place in the Championship with a stellar defensive record. They conceded just 16 goals in 46 matches as they reached 100 points, finishing second only on goal difference after Leeds scored 95 goals to Burnley's 69. That hasn't stopped the club looking to reinforce their defence, however, and they are now on the verge of signing a defender who can play at either centre back or right back, according to a report. The Athletic suggest Axel Tuanzebe is on the verge of putting pen to paper on a deal to move to Turf Moor from Ipswich, two years after he joined Kieran McKenna 's side. The now-27-year-old played 37 times for United's first team after making his way through the academy, before leaving for Ipswich on a permanent basis in 2023. Tuanzebe, who suffered a bizarre thumb injury last season, joined United at the age of eight. He became the first first-year scholar to captain the first team since Gary Neville, and made his first team debut in January 2017 at the age of 19. He struggled for first team game time, however, and went on loan five times - three of those spells being at Aston Villa. The defender first joined Villa in January 2018, but made just five appearances before the end of the season. He did, though, head back to Villa Park for the entirety of the next campaign as Villa were promoted to the Premier League. After that campaign, he started to play more at United before injuries stared to come into play. He joined Villa again for the 2021-22 season, but was recalled in January. After that, he spent time at Napoli and Stoke on a temporary basis, before joining Ipswich permanently in the summer of 2023. Now, though, his contract is up and he is seemingly set to join Burnley as a free agent. Ipswich did offer him a new deal. He will become the third signing of the summer for the Clarets, who have already secured moves for Quilindschy Hartman from Feyenoord and goalkeeper Max Weiss from Karlsruher in Germany.

Heather Knight aiming for World Cup as she recovers from hamstring injury
The 34-year-old's summer was ruined by a significant hamstring tendon issue suffered during last month's T20 clean sweep against the West Indies. Unable to feature in the upcoming series against India, she has instead booked a holiday to Switzerland and plans to watch Sarina Wiegman's England launch their European Championship title defence with Group D fixtures against France and the Netherlands in Zurich on July 5 and 9. This year's ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India is scheduled to begin on September 30, with England's opening match coming against South Africa on October 3. 'That World Cup is what I'm aiming for, it's what I've got my sights set on,' Knight told the PA news agency 'There's always bumps in the road with rehab but hopefully everything goes smoothly and I can be back early September and get a bit of cricket in before the World Cup. 'Things are tracking pretty well to hopefully be fit for that. It's healing well. 'We're not gonna rush things. It's a pretty gnarly injury: I ripped off the tendon quite well from the bone, so I have to be a little bit careful coming back.' Knight, who sat out three subsequent ODIs against the Windies and is also missing London Spirit's title defence in this season's Hundred, was on crutches for two weeks but avoided surgery. She is determined to make the most of her enforced absence amid the 'extremely dull' rehabilitation process. 'I'm going to Switzerland next week to watch the Lionesses play, so that's something I wouldn't have been able to do if I was playing cricket,' said Knight. 'I always love watching women's sport and it's the opportunity to go to a pretty cool country. 'I know a few of the players loosely: I've done a few bits with Leah (Williamson, England captain) and come across a few of the girls at events. 'It's really cool to see what they've done for women's sport in this country. 'Hopefully they can be successful because that Euros win in the UK (in 2022) was a really special moment for women's sport in this country and changed the face of football.' It has been difficult few months for Knight. She was stripped of the England captaincy following nine years in the role in the wake of an Ashes humiliation in Australia before sustaining the long-term injury in the early weeks of the new era under head coach Charlotte Edwards. 'The Ashes was pretty tough; I was sad that things had ended like that but the ECB decided they wanted me to have a fresh start and that was their decision and completely fine,' she said of the captaincy, which passed to Nat Sciver-Brunt. Great to have two of the driving forces behind the Knight Stokes Cup at Lord's today! — Lord's Cricket Ground (@HomeOfCricket) June 26, 2025 'I'm still very motivated to keep playing for England.' Alongside England men's captain Ben Stokes, Knight has given her name to a new national state school competition, which will launch in 2026 and conclude with finals at Lord's. The Barclays Knight-Stokes Cup – named after two of England's greatest state-educated cricketers and the brainchild of another ex-England skipper, Michael Vaughan – aims to drive state school participation in the sport. 'It's really important that we keep making cricket accessible,' said Knight. 'I'm really proud to put my name to it.' :: Schools can sign up for the inaugural Knight-Stokes Cup at

Former Manchester United prospect to join Burnley on a free transfer
Burnley are set to snap up Axel Tuanzebe on a free transfer after his contract with Ipswich Town comes to an end. The 27-year-old joined the Tractor Boys in 2023 and made 22 appearances in all competitions in his first season as they were promoted to the Premier League. The defender remained a regular in the first team in the top flight, making 22 Premier League appearances as Ipswich were relegated back to the Championship. The Athletic report that he was offered a new contract at Portman Road, but he will continue his career in the Premier League. Newly-promoted Burnley are on the verge of signing him up, with the defender undergoing a medical at Turf Moor. The DR Congo international can operate at right-back, which is where he mainly turned out for Ipswich, or in the heart of defence. The Clarets will offer Tuanzebe the chance to play for his fourth team in the Premier League after Manchester United, Aston Villa and Ipswich. Tuanzebe made his professional debut with Manchester United as a 19-year-old in 2007 after coming through the club's academy. He would remain a Red Devils player until 2023 but spent a lot of time out on loan, with three short-term spells at Aston Villa and stints with Napoli and Stoke. The 2020-21 season with Manchester United saw him feature reasonably regularly, making 19 appearances in all competitions, but in total for the Red Devils he only ever played 37 times. He will join a Burnley defence that worked wonders in the Championship last season under Scott Parker. The Clarets conceded just 16 goals in 46 games as they finished second in the Championship with 100 points. 'It's probably the bedrock and hopefully a summit that has been ingrained in us now. It's a habit for us,' he said. 'Of course, we go up a level where the tests will come thick and fast and we understand that. But after coming out of a big season where we've been pretty remarkably defensively, we'll see where that takes us.'
