
NISAR Satellite Will Monitor Earth Like Never Before, Says NASA As India Prepares For Lift-Off
Equipped with dual-frequency radar and the largest-ever antenna ever deployed in space, NISAR is the most expensive earth-observation satellite ever built, at $1.5 billion.
At 5:40 pm on July 30, India's heaviest rocket GSLV, will lift off from Sriharikota carrying the most sophisticated radar satellite ever built. The 2393-kg satellite developed at a cost of $1.5 billion, marks the culmination of a decade of hard-work by scientists from NASA and ISRO who persevered through the pandemic to bring the mission to fruition.
'Everything looks good. The rocket is set. The weather is fine. We are ready to go," said Phil Barela, NISAR Project Manager from Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the pre-launch briefing 48 hours before the lift-off. A team of scientists from NASA-JPL is currently in India working closely with ISRO scientists, as the much-anticipated Indo-US satellite mission gears up for take-off.
The much-anticipated NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) is one of the biggest Indo-US satellite missions – that will provide a three-dimensional view of Earth in unprecedented detail. The first-of-its-kind satellite will scan nearly all the Earth's land and ice surfaces twice every 12 days, observing changes as small as a centimeter with high-resolution imagery, collecting earth observation like no other NASA satellite before it.
'We already have over two dozen missions in orbit observing Earth, but NISAR is a groundbreaking mission. It will advance our understanding significantly, with the ability to detect changes as small as a centimetre – regardless of the weather conditions. It has brought India and the US together to study Earth like never before," said Karen St Germain, Director of Earth science at NASA on Monday.
The satellite will provide a detailed record of how Earth's land and oceans are changing over time – boosting climate research. The data will help scientists see the precursors to natural hazards like landslides, earthquakes and volcanoes to aid in disaster warnings and preparedness.
The satellite worth $1.5 billion with NASA accounting for roughly $1.2 billion is one of the most expensive earth-imaging satellites ever built. While NASA has contributed the L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar – a high-rate telecommunication subsystem, GPS receivers and a deployable 12-meter unfurlable antenna. ISRO, on its part has provided the S-band SAR payload, the spacecraft bus to accommodate both payloads, the GSLV rocket and all associated launch services.
The spacecraft will bounce microwave signals off Earth's surface and receive the return signals on a radar antenna reflector measuring 12 meters. Result – about 80 terabytes of data products per day over the course of NISAR's prime mission. The information will be processed, stored and distributed via the cloud – freely accessible to all. 'Any process that moves the land – even by just a few millimeters – NISAR will observe. No other Earth-monitoring mission offers this level of detail and frequency," noted Gerald Bawden, NISAR Program Scientist at NASA.

NASA Astronaut Back In Orbit 20 Years After Bihu Dance On International Space Station
NASA astronaut Mike Fincke is currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the newly launched SpaceX Crew-11 mission. This isn't his first time in orbit. His return to space brings back a special memory of the time he danced Bihu in zero gravity. Mr Fincke had famously performed the traditional Assamese dance during a previous expedition to the ISS in 2004. The crew lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 1 and will spend the next six months on board the ISS conducting research that supports future missions to the Moon and Mars. "Oneness": Shubhanshu Shukla's "Borderless" View Of Earth From Space
New Delhi: When Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla looked out of the International Space Station (ISS) for the first time, he saw something that no textbook, simulator, or training module could have prepared him for. The Earth, vast and radiant, floated beneath him-without borders, without divisions. "It seems that the whole Earth is our home," he said, reflecting on the profound shift in perspective that space travel had gifted him. "You don't see any border, any boundary line. Humanity has always been and is living here. I feel a sense of oneness". This sense of planetary unity, deeply rooted in India's ancient philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' -- the world is one family -- became a central theme of Mr Shukla's reflections. "The motto of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in our culture, you can understand it very easily when you look at the Earth from the outside," he said. "It was not what I had in mind, but the one thing that stood out for me was the oneness of the planet, which we call home". Mr Shukla's journey aboard the Axiom-4 mission, also known as Mission Akash Ganga, marked India's return to human spaceflight after four decades. He became the first Indian to visit the ISS and only the second Indian astronaut after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma's 1984 Indo-Soviet mission. But this time, India wasn't hitching a ride -- it was participating on a commercial mission. "After 41 years, an Indian returned to space. But this time, it wasn't a solitary leap. It was the beginning of what I like to call India's second orbit," Mr Shukla told NDTV. The mission, brokered by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX, cost India nearly $70 million. Yet Mr Shukla was unequivocal about its value. "This mission has been very successful and will be very beneficial for our human space mission," he said, referring to India's upcoming indigenous human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan. In his first public interaction after returning from the 20-day mission, Mr Shukla described the experience as transformative. "The mission itself exceeded every one of my expectations. But nothing, literally nothing, could have prepared me for what came after," he said. "The love, the messages, and the support from every corner of Bharat... it filled me with something which I did not expect. A new kind of purpose". Mr Shukla's conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi from space was a defining moment. With the Indian flag fluttering behind him, he told the Prime Minister, "I travel to space with the dreams of a billion hearts with me. I want them to live this journey with me because I feel that it is equally theirs as it is mine. Because I feel that this is truly the journey of an entire nation". Mr Shukla's reflections also touched on the physical and psychological adaptations required for space travel. "Understanding how your body reacts to the microgravity and the environment of space added on to the completeness of the entire training," he said. His readiness for future missions was evident. "There is a properly incubated rehabilitation and recuperation programme," he explained. "And step by step, you gain your strength and your balance. I feel perfectly normal. It feels as if I am ready to go on the space mission again". As India prepares for Gaganyaan, Mr Shukla's experience is expected to shape astronaut training, mission protocols, and public engagement. "No States, No Countries -- Only Humanity" are Mr Shukla's reflections from space, echoing India's universal value "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam".
